“I was dead for 67 minutes. It's a miracle that I'm here today.” Those are the words of Bruce Richardson, who survived a cardiac arrest(心脏骤停) in July 2016 thanks to the quick actions of his friends and the first responders who refused to give up.
It was an early summer morning, a typical Saturday. Bruce volunteered as usual in the community center. "I had no symptoms of any problems. It was a completely normal morning; I felt fine," he shared. "I was visiting with friends. Then, I passed out. I know from others what happened next."
Bruce's friend, Jack, had learned how to perform CPR, and he quickly began chest compression. Another friend, Doug, dialed 911 and the operator walked him through the compression until first responders arrived. Once the ambulance arrived, the paramedics(护理人员) tried five times to restart Bruce's heart with an AED. By this time, Bruce had been without a heartbeat for over 30 minutes. On the phone with an emergency medical technician, one of the paramedics was instructed to try two AEDs simultaneously. It worked; Bruce's heart began to beat again. Incredibly, he awoke the next day and was able to communicate. After a week, Bruce made a full recovery and left the hospital.

Michael and his wife, new residents in a San Francisco apartment, learned about their neighbor Jef Dunan's volunteer work for Bangladesh Relief, an organization that provides food, clothing and essential supplies for disadvantaged people in northern Bangladesh. Inspired, Michael donated $ 150 to Dunan's GoFundMe campaign. However, a credit card notification(通知) alerted him to an unintended $ 15, 041 charge.
When he saw the five-figure number, he was confused. Soon, it all made sense -- Michael's credit card number started with four and one. Clearly, he accidentally began typing his credit card information while his cursor(光标) was still in the donation box.
Michael planned to call Dunan to explain, but before he had the chance to do that, he started receiving Facebook messages from Shohag Chandra, the charity's Bangladesh- based program manager, thanking him for his generous donation. After he looked through the photos of people holding thank-you signs that read his name, Michael's heart sank. He felt terrible that he had to withdraw his handsome donation. Once his original contribution was refunded, he decided to donate $ I, 500.
Although Michael had told his family and friends about the tale, he decided to share it publicly on social media, after Dunan told him the organization was desperately in need of funds. “The least I could do was take the time to post this story online and see if I could inspire other people to donate to the cause," Michael said.
Little did he know, though, that the story would be seen far and wide, ending up raising more than $ 120,000 for Bangladesh Relief in the span of only a few weeks-about eight times Michael's mistaken donation. According to Dunan, more than 3,700 people have contributed because of Michael’s post. On September 7,1991, the costliest hailstorm(雹暴)in Canadian history hit Calgary's southern suburbs. As a result, since 1996 a group of insurance companies have spent about $2 million per year on the Alberta Hail Suppression Project. Airplanes seed threatening storm cells with a chemical to make small ice crystals(冰晶) fall as rain before they can grow into dangerous hailstones. But farmers in east-central Alberta—downwind(下风处) of the hail project flights—worry that precious moisture(水分)is being stolen from their thirsty land by the cloud seeding.
Norman Stienwand, who farms in that area has been addressing public meetings on this is suefor years.“ Basically, the provincial government is letting the insurance companies protect the Calgary-Edmonton urban area from hail, ” Mr Stienwand says, “ but they're increasing drought risk as far east as Saskatchewan.”
The Alberta hail project is managed by Terry Krauss, a cloud physicist who works for Weather Modification Inc. of Fargo, North Dakota.“ We affect only a very small percentage of the total moisture in the air, so we cannot be causing drought,” Dr.Krauss says. “In fact, we may be helping increase the moisture downwind by creating wetter ground.”
One doubter about the safety of cloud seeding is Chuck Doswell, a research scientist who just retired from the University of Oklahoma.“ In 1999, I personally saw significant tornadoes(龙卷风)form from a seeded storm cell in Kansas,” Dr.Doswell says.“ Does cloud seeding create killer storms or reduce moisture downwind No one really knows,of course, but the seeding goes on.”
Given the degree of doubt, Mr. Stienwand suggests, “ It would be wise to stop cloud seeding.” In practice, doubt has had the opposite effect. Due to the lack of scientific proof concerning their impacts, no one has succeeded in winning a lawsuit(官司) against cloud-seeding companies. Therefore, private climate engineering can continue in relative legal safety.
32. What does the project aim to do
A. Conserve moisture in the soil. B. Prevent the formation of hailstones.
C. Forecast disastrous hailstorms. D. Investigate chemical use in farming.
33. Who are opposed to the project
A. Farmers in east-central Alberta. B. Managers of insurance companies.
C. Provincial government officials. D. Residents of Calgary and Edmonton.
34. Why does Dr. Doswell mention the tornadoes he saw in 1999
A. To compare different kinds of seeding methods.
B. To illustrate the development of big hailstorms
C. To indicate a possible danger of cloud seeding
D. To show the link between storms and moisture.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Scientific studies have proved Stienwand right
B. Private climate engineering is illegal in Canada
C. The doubt about cloud seeding has disappeared.
D. Cloud-seeding companies will continue to exist.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Dancing is natural and almost any child can dance. However, why do so many people find it hard to dance when they reach their teens or adulthood 36
Most people have heard the words "Dance like nobody is watching. " 37 When we're learning something new, we hate having an audience watching our silly mistakes. Actually everyone else is too busy worrying about their own mistakes. Chances are that you're not the only one struggling with the steps!
We all have patterns of muscle memory. Your body likes doing repetitive movements that it doesn't have to think about. 38 Your brain may understand, but it can take a while to direct your limbs to interpret these new and unfamiliar movements. Be patient with yourself and understand it's the way your body works.
39 If you’ve never danced before, the complex rhythms(节奏) and fast footwork of flamenco would be a big challenge as the first dance style. If you’re inflexible, I wouldn’t recommend starting cold with ballet either. Instead, do some yoga first to get your body used to the new demands ballet will place on it.
A lack of rhythm is the biggest obstacle(障碍) to learning to dance. However, it can be overcome with enough practice. 40 Then learn to dance when you begin to feel the beat. Dance can be a very rewarding and enjoyable hobby. Just be patient with yourself and learn to dance
A. It's human nature to dislike looking foolish.
B. You'll be able to do them almost without thinking
C. If you have no rhythm, try to master dance steps first.
D. Learning a musical instrument is a good way to learn rhythm.
E. Dance requires you to move your arms and legs in unusual ways,
F. The other possibility is that you picked a style of dance that doesn't suit you.
G. There are many things that can hold people back when they try to learn dancing

Michael was the only son of his mother, Helen. She raised him alone ever since her husband died when Michael was only three years old. Helen was not rich. But she spent most of her money on Michael and their daily expenses. Michael's worst fear was being seen as an outsider by his friends. So instead of telling the truth, he boasted that his father was a photographer in Africa while his mother was a designer. The truth was that Helen worked as a cleaning lady at a bar. Michael was so ashamed knowing this because he didn't think of it as a job to be proud of.
On the day before his 16th birthday, Helen excitedly asked him if there was anything he wanted in particular as a gift.
"All my friends at school ride motorcycles. I want one too," he said quickly. Helen sighed. She knew she wouldn't be able to get him a motorcycle. Instead, she decided to buy him a mug(杯) with his portrait riding a motorbike. It was all she could afford. When Helen excitedly entered her son's room to give him her present the next day, Michael opened the box and threw it on the bed as soon as he saw the mug inside. " This is the worst birthday ever! I'm having my party at Grandpa's, and you're not invited!" he yelled.
On Michael's birthday, hearing what he said, his grandfather Graham fell silent. When Michael's friends started to arrive, Michael gestured for them to move towards the garden where his grandfather set up an outdoor table for them to stay. Once they were settled down, Graham turned on the projector (放映机). Michael and his friends' eyes were glued to the projector screen, where pictures of Michael growing up started to flash-Mom reading a book to Michael, Mom holding crying Michael in her arms at the hospital, Mom comforting Michael after a bad football game etc. Michael couldn't hold back the tears. He ran to his grandfather and hugged him
