I seldom kept my things tidy and in order, while my roommate Kate was very organised. Each of her objects had its place, but mine were always hidden somewhere. She even labeled(贴标签于)everything. I always had to look for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. Finally, we got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her shouting, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Then, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started shouting. She shouted back louder.
The room was filled with anger just at that moment. We would not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From the end of the conversation, I could recognize that her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled(爬)under her covers, crying. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made the bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so busy with my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried, and there was an expression of disbelief on her face. Then, she reached out her hands to hold mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.” I apologized for my bad behaviour, and we hugged each other.
Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year and kept contact with each other. We didn’t always agree, but we learnt the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

“I spilled soup all over the table, but it wasn’t my fault.” “I got into trouble at school, but it wasn’t my fault.” Such statements are often heard. “It’s not my fault” is a common response for so many people and especially teenagers. Parents complain that they’re tired of “excuses”.
The reason why variations of “it’s not my fault” are so popular is that they remove guilt, blame and anger. Those emotions may come from others’ reactions or our own thoughts. In the case of adolescents, they are often trying to escape from responsibility and punishment.
Some teens would benefit from decreasing their self-blame. Those who blame themselves for things that they can’t control tend to be highly self-critical and are more likely to be anxious.
Many teens overly rely on “it’s not my fault”. However, overuse of the phrase can result in feelings of helplessness to control their own lives. Besides, “it’s not my fault” focuses a teen’s attention on what is done as opposed to what needs to be done. In trying to get them to assume responsibility, many parents attempt to convince their children that something is their fault, but this approach tends to be ineffective. A more effective approach is to face up to drawbacks and actively find solutions to them.
People may not have caused all their problems, but they have to solve them anyway. Getting stuck in sharing blame often keeps people from moving forward effectively. What will a person do if he is pushed into a deep lake He could certainly stay in the water, yelling, “It’s not my fault.” However, that is not going to get him out of the water. At some point, he needs to swim to shore, regardless of whose fault it is.
Like most things in life, freeing ourselves from blame has its advantages and disadvantages. The question isn’t what is “right”, but what is the most effective in moving forward.
28. Who is likely to rely on “it’s not my fault”
A. A highly self-critical teenager.
B. A teenager unwilling to admit a fault.
C. A teenager facing up to his responsibilities.
D. A teenager anxious about uncontrollable things.
29. What is the author’s advice on getting teens to assume responsibility
A. Persuading them to admit their fault.
B. Letting them focus on what has been done.
C. Making them deal with the mistake actively.
D. Helping them analyze the reason for the mistake.
30. Why does the author raise such a question in paragraph 5
A. To suggest we face up to drawbacks actively.
B. To show handling problems should come first.
C. To explain why teenagers get stuck in sharing blame.
D. To analyze what kind of problems are caused by others.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text
A. To help teenagers face mistakes properly.
B. To help teenagers identify personal value.
C. To tell parents how to educate their children.
D. To tell children to do self-reflection positively.
D
We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively. We achieve it actively through direct experience, by testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning.
We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive. Conditioned as we are too passive at learning, it’s not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers.
Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay and rumor(谣言).
Have you ever played the game Rumor It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn’t show it to anyone. Then the person whispers(耳语)it, word for word, to another person. That person, in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. Finally, the last person writes down the message word for word as they hear it. Then the two written statements are compared. Typically, the original message changes.
That’s what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it and stamping it with their own personal style. Yet those who hear it think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and authors: A statement of opinion by one writer may be restated as fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another; and this process may continue, unless it happens to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts.
32. According to the passage, active learning may occur in _______.
A. reading scientific journals B. listening to the teacher in class
C. doing a chemical experiment D. watching news programs on TV
33. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Classroom. B. Newspapers. C. Active learning. D. Passive learning.
34. What can we learn from the game Rumor
A. Playing games can make people more active.
B. People tend to like telling lies when playing games.
C. The message may change when being passed on.
D. People may have problems with their sense of hearing.
35. What can we infer from the text
A. Scholars and authors can’t be trusted.
B. Passive learning may not be reliable.
C. People like spreading rumors in daily life.
D. Active learning is more important than passive learning.

My Best Teaching Experience
Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended(使停学) many times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively (专心地 ). By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.
He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about his past about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these sorts of referrals(移交)were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, "Tyler, why don't you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own " With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can't remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week's suspension.
To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler's anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as
a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.
