Dear editor,
My English teacher is very strict with us. Several days ago, when we were in class, Tom asked me a question. But she thought we were speaking in class. She asked us to stand at the back of the classroom for a few minutes. This made me very sad. After that, I feel nervous in her class, so I don’t like her class. However, I really want to learn English well. What should I do?
Yours,
Mike
Dear Mike,
I am sorry you are having difficulty with your English class. Every teacher wants his or her students to study hard. So I think you should have a talk with your English teacher and tell her what you were doing with Tom that day. If she knows your worries, maybe she will help you with your English. Yours,
Editor

What will man be like in the future——in 5000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, men are usually about three inches* taller. Five hundred years is quite a short period of time in the river of the long history, so we may guess that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a lot. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity*. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and finally we shall need larger ones! This may bring about a physical change to the head, in particular the forehead*, will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are always in use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is probably that man’s eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, we will make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are possibly to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive* because they are used a lot in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body as time passes by because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both men and women will probably have no hair.
Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may be true. All the same, no matter what these changes are, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and feelings similar to our own.
33. We can probably read the passage above in a ____.
A. movie poster
B. science magazine
C. storybook
D. guidebook
34. The change in man’s size of forehead will probably be because _______.
A. he makes use onIy 20% of the brain’s capacity
B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries
C. the other 80% of his brain will grow finally
D. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on
35. Which of the following is TRUE about a human being in the future?
A. He thinks and feels in different way.
B. He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses.
C. He is hairless because hair is no longer useful.
D. His fingers grow weaker because he doesn’t use them.
36. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. How man’s life will be in the future
B. Future man is growing taller and uglier
C. Future man will still have a lot in common with us
D. What future man will look like

Last Sunday, I walked into the house in the afternoon to find my brother rushing around in a hurry. As soon as I took my coat off, my little brother placed a lot of papers in my hands and asked me to fold them up so they could be put into an envelope as quickly as possible. He said it needed to get done quickly before it turned dark.
I was a little surprised that something could be so urgent* on a Sunday. Only when half was done did I realize to look at what I was folding. After I read it, I couldn’t help smiling from ear to ear. It was a lovely letter to all the people in my neighborhood. My brother was asking everyone to let him know if anyone needed help. He left his contact* information and said that anyone that needed help should get in touch with him and he would help find a way out. He also asked people to get in touch if they were able to help out.
London received an unusual amount of snow last week, and the city was not completely prepared for it. So it was quite difficult to get anywhere. Only the major roads had been cleared, and smaller roads and sidewalks could be quite treacherous. There are a good number of old people in our little community. So my brother thought that the snow may have caused some difficulty for some of them, especially because we live on a hill.
A few elderly people got in touch with him asking for help for things they needed. One of them was especially thankful because his caregiver couldn’t make it. To our surprise, he got more calls from people offering to help. Everyone was really touched and wrote to my brother wonderful email. One of our neighbors wrote email saying that although she wasn’t able to help, she was “very proud of having a neighbor like him who puts other people’s interests first.”
37. According to the passage, at first, the writer ______________.
 A. didn’t notice what was on the papers B. was not going to help his brother
 C. found it interesting to fold up the papers D. was surprised at what was on the papers
38. The writer’s brother sent letters to the neighbors in order to _________________.
 A. ask them to clear up the roads B. offer them some help
 C. tell them the coming snow D. share his own things with them
39. The underlined word in the third paragraph “treacherous” means _____________.
 A. dangerous B. dirty C. smooth D. crowded
40. We can learn from the passage that _______________.
A. nobody asked for help from the writer’s brother
B. the writer’s brother helped clean the major roads
C. the neighbors were inspired* by the writer’s brother
D. the writer’s family has made a difference to others

2. Who will probably show interest in The Petit Appetit Cookbook?

4. Which of the following is fit for 5-year-old Rose who is interested in pet stories?
A. The Petit Appetit Cookbook B. Everyday Raw Express
C. If You Give a Dog a Donut D. Where the Wild Things Are
【答案】C

HIGH (Human Growth Hormone) could be the favorite drug at the next athletic world championships, and we might never know it. It is a natural substance(物质) produced by the human body, and it helps children’s bones and muscles(肌肉) to grow. Scientists are allowed to make the drug and it is also legal to take HGH in most countries. HGH is considered a wonder drug for children. It helps many children with growth problems every year.
However, some athletes are now taking the drug. HGH helps add muscle in adults and recent research by the World Anti-Doping Agency shows that HGH may improve the sportsman’s time by 5% when he takes part in short, fast races. Some athletes say that HGH surely makes them stronger. It also helps them to recover(恢复) more quickly from injuries.
Although it is banned by most professional sports, HGH is almost impossible to test for. The drug is completely natural and it will only show in tests for around 24 hours after taking it. Testing is usually done only during competitions, but athletes use HGH during training, so it is very difficult to know who has used the drug. This makes it very attractive for some athletes. Scientists are developing a new test which will find the drug in the body for up to two weeks. But it isn’t going to be easy. Everybody has different levels of natural HGH in their body.
For this reason, scientists are warning athletes of the possible problems with the drug. Research shows that HGH increase the risk of cancer. But is this enough to stop athletes from taking it? Scientists don’t think so. Some athletes will do all they can to win, and worry about their health later.
1. Which of these statements is WRONG?

Her cooking way was different. Vegetables that had been cooked crisply became very tender and soft. Fish that had been fried became soup. Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources, as well as one of the oldest. Something shows that windmills(风车) began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power.
For many centuries, people used windmills to make wheat into flour(面粉) or get water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in faraway areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were hardly used.
During the 1970s, people started becoming more cared about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would run out one day. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind
From the first paragraph, what can we know about wind and windmills?

2.Health
A good night’s sleep
Do you get the sleep you need?
When the morning sun looks in through our window, do you jump out of bed or go on lying?
Having enough sleep can make the difference between a great day and a terrible one!
Here are the tips for a good night’s sleep:
First, go to bed and get up at the same time, even if you haven’t gotten a good night’s sleep. Sleeping late for just a few days can change your body clock to a different cycle.
Also, avoid big meals at night. Eating heavy, rich food within two hours of bedtime can keep you awake. Your stomach works hard because of those fatty foods, and that may keep you up.
Your body produces a chemical called melatonin that helps you sleep. Light changes the amount of melatonin. It produces more in the evening and less in the daytime. So at night turn off your TV and PC. Also, don’t read from a backlit device(有背光的设备) like an iPad. Some scientists think that light from those devices stops your body from making melatonin. So turn those screens off at least an hour before bedtime.
After a good night’s sleep, you’ll be able to face a new day.

How long are you willing to wait for a webpage to open before you start to lose your patience? Half a minute? A few seconds? Google engineers have discovered that even 400 milliseconds―as short as the blink of an eye―is too long for most Internet users.
A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. People hardly notice such a small time difference, but it does cause them to stop searching, reported The New York Times. “Without question, nobody likes to wait,” said Arvind Jain, a Google engineer. “Every millisecond matters.”
Nowadays, millions of smart-phones and computers are continually gathering and sending out information. With so many people downloading maps, sports videos, news and restaurant recommendations, you can get digital “traffic jams”. Meanwhile, users are expecting faster and faster service.
Google found that if one website is 250 milliseconds slower than another website, then people will visit it less often. This is why technology companies are now competing to be the fastest. Google said people do expect different things from different websites because they realize not all loading times are the same. For example, a person will be more patient waiting for a video to load than for a search result.
Even so, four out of five online users will click away if a video takes too long to load. This makes it difficult for video websites to choose between the quality of pictures and fast loading times.
Trying to get a higher speed has always been part of the history of the Internet. In the 1990s, when the World Wide Web first started to become popular, it was very crowded and slow; people called it the “World Wide Wait”. But engineers managed to fight the problem with new inventions. They laid a lot of fiber optic cables (光缆)for sending in high speed; they improved software so it would work more smoothly; they placed computer servers all around the world to be nearer to users; all this increased speed.
Nowadays we can enjoy much faster Internet. Famous search engines such as Google and Microsoft’s Bing usually find search results in less than a second. However, in order to meet the requirement of Internet users, these tycoons should never stop their steps.
