Before my friends left, they laughed at me for doing that, but I thought, why take a risk After all, it had been 3 that week, resulting in flood warnings.
I was awakened by the 4 of rushing water, as if I were lying beside a waterfall instead of in my bedroom. When I swung my legs off the bed, I was shocked to feel cold water already up to my knees and 5 fast.
Shaking in darkness, I 6 my phone and turned on its flashlight. Then by the light I could see water was shooting from the garden door. It must have broken the sandbags. The river, usually such a quiet, slow moving river in my region, had 7 burst its banks. And now I had to get out! Any effects of the wine before sleep were gone; 8 sobers (使清醒) me up. I heard the garden door starting to crack under the 9 of the flood. All around me things were breaking, and the cupboards were being torn apart. After I went outside, I learned the river had flooded the neighbourhood. Not 10 got out. Therefore, if I had 11 just a few minutes later, I would have drowned.
In the end, I think the experience made me 12 and determined to live each day to its fullest. I was very 13 to drowning that day. But rather than keep thinking about what happened, I prefer to 14 what my mother told me afterwards, “Don’t remember the day 15 you lost everything. Remember the day you survive. That day marked the beginning of a new chapter in your life.”

Lacquer fans are amazing fans from China, and their history dates back to the Han Dynasty. Later, lacquer fans became one of the top collections in the art world during the Tang Dynasty.
Lacquer is a natural material taken from the lacquer tree. It was first used to coat wooden objects to protect them from water and insects. Over time, workers began to use lacquer to make and decorate fans.
Lacquer fans are made with bamboo or wooden frames (框架). Traditionally, they are painted with different subjects and patterns (图案) such as flowers, birds, and figures (人物), to make them more beautiful. Although the methods of making fans continue to develop, skilled workers still use traditional skills to create lacquer fans, keeping this ancient art alive.
Nowadays, lacquer fan painting is one of the most popular activities among young people, which is considered a new form of expression of lacquer art. Instead of using traditional tools such as brushes, lacquer fan painting is done only by the lacquer and water. The process is quite simple: people first choose the colors they want to use, drop the colored lacquer into the water, mix it, put the fans in the water for a while, and then take them out. And that’s it.
Making each fan is like opening a blind box, as no one can know how the product will be like before it turns out. So every fan is unique.

For centuries, lacquer fans have been loved for their beauty. And they are becoming increasingly popular among young people nowadays.

(2023·云南曲靖·二模)A livestreaming platform(直播平台)once tried to broadcast(播出)classroom situations live, including students having classes or self-studying. It raised a heated discussion. Here are some students’ opinions.
Student A: I agree with it. When I watched the videos, I saw some comments(评价) from adults like “I admire the way they focus on studying. I want to go back to my school time.” The livestreaming show reminds adults of their wonderful memories of school. It’s a good thing.
Student B: I support the idea. Students’ parents can see what they are doing at school. It will help them know their children better. What’s more, I think if students know they are on a live show, they will behave themselves. Teachers will try to make their classes more interesting.
Student C: In my opinion, it’s bad to show students’ performances in the classroom on the Internet. It’s a violation(侵犯) of privacy. Not only can the parents of these kids watch it on their computers or mobile phones, but also other people in society can watch it. It’s a safety threat(威胁), because bad people may make use of the videos illegally(非法地)and hurt these students.
Student D: This act doesn’t respect students. Through the live broadcast, people across the country can see the students’ acts without those students even knowing about it. If it is an open class and the school has got the students’ permission, it will be fine. But now it seems that the platform is directly putting the videos on the Internet without permission.

Brooke comes from a climbing family. Both her parents are past climbing champions (冠军). Her father stopped climbing some years ago, but her mother, Robyn, who won four world cup titles one after another for four years, is still climbing.
