Meet Yellowstone’ s Four Mammal Friends
Bison
Bison, which are herbivores (食草动物), can reach a weight of 2,000 pounds. Despite their large size, they are highly agile (敏捷的), capable of running at speeds up to 30 mph and jumping vertically (垂直地) up to six feet. In 1902, America's wild bison had decreased to only two dozen due to over-hunting. Conservation efforts increased the Yellowstone bison population to 4,800 in 2023. See them in Hayden, Lamar and Pelican valleys.
Gray Wolf
Gray wolves had gone extinct in Yellowstone until 14 were reintroduced in 1995. Today, approximately 108 wolves live here. These social animals live in groups and can be gray, white or black. They hunt elk, deer and bison near dawn and dusk thanks to their excellent night vision. For your best chance of seeing them, head to Lamar or Hayden valleys or Blacktail Deer Plateau in the early morning.
Elk
Up to 20,000 elk summer in Yellowstone, but most move to lower altitude in the winter months. Elk are a large member of the deer family and can be identified by their size and white legs. Mating season, known as “the rut”, occurs each fall when male elk fight with each other for females. It's characterized by their haunting bugling sound. In the summer, see them in Cascade Meadows, Madison Canyon and Lamar Valley.
Grizzly Bear
One of two species of bears in Yellowstone, grizzlies are big. They can weigh up to 700pounds and have a distinctive hump between their shoulders. Grizzlies are omnivores (杂食动物) and will eat bugs, plants, fish and mammals. Approximately 150 live in Yellowstone and if you' re lucky, you may spot them in the Hayden and Lamar valleys, north of Mount Washington and between Fishing Bridge and the East Entrance.
21. What is the reason for the decline of America's wild bison population by 1902
A. Habitat loss. B. Climate change. C. Infectious disease. D. Unlimited hunting.
22. Which statement is TRUE about gray wolves in Yellowstone
A. They were reintroduced in 1902. B. They mainly hunt during the midday.
C. They can only be found in Lamar Valley. D. They live in packs and can have different colors.

Every so often, Margo Jimenez says, her husband would come home from work with injuries. “One day, he came home with a black eye, his glasses were broken, and he had bites on his arm,” Margo recalled. “I said, ‘Well, did you report it ’ He said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Why not ’ He said, ‘Margo, because it happens all the time.’”
Fred Jimenez worked as a special education instructional assistant for the Northside Independent School District in San Antonio. He helped students with disabilities meet their learning and physical needs, and his job involved everything from diaper changes (换尿布) to helping students with hands-on instruction to managing violent outbursts. On Feb.7, a violent outburst sent him to the hospital when a high school student with a cognitive pushed him, causing a fall that led to a brain bleed.
Kreusel, a teacher who worked with Fred, has taught middle schoolers with cognitive disabilities for the past 15 years. She said she loves her students, and doesn't blame them for hurting her. Many of them have their own triggers, and Kreusel says she does her best to learn them. But she isn't always able to avoid an outburst. “The student may be aggressive, but it doesn't mean they are targeting you because they hate you,” Kreusel said. “It's usually something that has happened, and they might be nonverbal. They can't express it, and they just blow up.”
According to the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most students with developmental disabilities aren't any more aggressive than other students. But for some, their disability can lead to frustration and, in turn, aggression. That can make it harder for school districts to hire special education staff, at a time when schools across the country are struggling to fill these positions. And a recent federal survey found, nationwide, special education vacancies (空缺) are the most difficult for schools to fill. She thinks she and her colleagues will continue to get hurt until the district hires more instructional assistants and pays them well enough that they' re willing to stay.
24. How does the author start the passage
A. By making up a sad story. B. By presenting a conversation.
C. By describing a family conflict. D. By providing statistics about injuries.
25. What can we learn about Fred's job
A. It requires little patience and skills. B. It may involve unexpected risks of injury.
C. It demands a significant amount of physical labor. D. It aims to improve students' academic performance.
26. What kind of person is Kreusel
A. Loving and devoted. B. Humorous and gentle. C. Ambitious and sociable. D. Creative and outgoing.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraphs
A. Aggression is the main cause of workplace injury.
B. Special education vacancies are declining nationwide.
C. Workplace injuries in special education are a concern.
D. Special students are more aggressive than other students.
C
Using naturally-occurring resources for construction, such as wood and bamboo, have been used for centuries. However, there is one naturally-available resource that is commonly found in our lives and has great potential but has not been very well explored: sodium chloride, also known as table salt.
In the past, salt was often viewed as a precious product because surface salt was hard to come by and difficult to obtain. Nowadays, salt is an affordable, common product. It is excellent at storing heat and humidity and is antibacterial and fire-resistant. Additionally, because of its structure, it is hard to permeate. It also has many qualities that make it versatile (多用途的) in the food, chemical and health industries. Raw salt materials have been used throughout history, especially in areas near salt flats. Written records of cities, such as Getta near Damascus and Taghaza in Mali, show those buildings were primarily made of salt blocks. This material was used because of the location's classness to salt mines and lack of other viable construction materials.
Atelier Luma, a French design firm, has developed a process of creating sustainable salt cladding panels. They also intend to strengthen the local salt industry through the production of this material. Saltwater from the Rh ne river delta (三角洲) in southern France has been used to produce salt throughout history. Through extensive research, Atelier Luma designers used this local resource to their advantage. They developed a way of growing crystallized salt panels using a metal mesh submerged underwater, maximizing the natural salt crystallization (结晶化) process that occurs there. Atelier Luma's salt panels can be seen at Frank Gehry's tower at Luma Arles, specifically at the Wall of Salt. This is the first large-scale application of salt cladding.
Through increased exploration of salt as a building material, salt-based materials could serve as viable alternatives to traditional construction materials. Because of increased seawater desalination (淡化) and potash (钾肥) mining for agricultural fertilizers, there is an abundance of salt that is produced as a by-product of these processes. This has resulted in the resource becoming more easily available than at any other time in history.
28. Why was salt used for building in Getta and Taghaza
A. Because salt was a versatile product.
B. Because salt proved available and practical.
C. Because salt blocks prevented the spread of disease.
D. Because salt was lighter than other building materials.
29. Which of the following is correct about Atelier Luma
A. It is located in the Rh ne river delta. B. It pioneers the way of developing salt panels.
C. It maximizes natural salt production in France. D. It applies salt cladding panels for the first time.
30. Which characteristic of salt is stressed in the last paragraph
A. Abundance. B. Desalination. C. Durability. D. Strength.
31. What would be the best title of the passage
A. The Past and Present of Salt Industry.
B. Salt: The Most Sustainable Building Material.
C. Atelier Luma: A Promising Design Company.
D. The Rise of Salt as an Eco-Friendly Building Material.
D
Hibernation (冬眠) is a classic topic of science fiction. In movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, or Passengers, crew members are put into a state of sleep to take year-long journeys to space. Now a new study from Washington University has shown that human hibernation may soon become a reality.
The research team carried out tests on rats— animals that do not naturally hibernate. They first identified a group of neurons (神经元) in a deep brain region, which were found to be involved in controlling body temperature during hibernation. They showed that, in mice, these neurons could be stimulated using ultrasound (超声波), which was delivered through a helmet without causing an injury.
When receiving the ultrasound, the mice showed a drop in body temperature of about 3℃, and their heart rates fell by about 47%. When the ultrasound system was switched off, they woke up again. The result was “surprising and fascinating”, said Hong Chen, a professor who led the work.
Researchers are also trying to determine how to harness the power of hibernation to help humans. They believe that it could be key to addressing health conditions like heart disease, and Alzheimer's. Furthermore, hibernation's ability to slow aging, which was observed in bats, could benefit space exploration, enabling longer missions with less food requirements. Research in animals also suggests that bodies of hibernating astronauts might lose less bone and muscle, making them fit and ready to start challenging exploration soon after they wake up.
By unlocking the secrets of this remarkable process, researchers may uncover ways to improve human health, as well as gain new insights into the natural world. Therefore, the exploration of hibernation is an exciting area that is sure to harvest numerous benefits in the years to come.
The scientists now plan to look at how lowered body temperature might affect the cognitive (认知的) abilities of humans. “Our next experiments will test working memory in monkeys. This is important because while astronauts physically hibernate as they fly into deep space, their brain still needs to be working,” said Chen.
32. How did researchers put rats into hibernation
A. By activating specific brain neurons. B. By putting a regular helmet on them.
C. By lowering their body temperature. D. By using ultrasound through an operation.
33. What does the underlined word “harness” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Discover. B. Challenge. C. Overlook. D. Employ.
34. What advantage might hibernation bring to humans
A. It improves people's mental health. B. It predicts a variety of heart diseases.
C. It helps astronauts keep physically fit. D. It enables astronauts to build up muscle.
35. What's the purpose of the last paragraph
A. To point out the significance of the study. B. To bring out the focus of follow-up studies.
C. To discuss other factors affecting hibernation. D. To explain practical applications of the finding.

Go Gardening
Gardening provides numerous benefits beyond just fresh vegetables and flowers. It can also aid in weight management, fitness, and mental sharpness. There are more advantages.
It's a fun workout.
36 But if you find the idea of working in a garden a bit dull, knowing it's doing you good physically might make it more entertaining. You plant seeds, pull up weeds, move pots, and push a lawnmower (剪草机) etc. 37 Even better, whatever your age, it is an activity with a purpose--and one that might keep you in motion longer than traditional exercise.
It reduces your risk of heart disease.
Even though gardening may not involve high-intensity exercise, it still provides heart-health benefits. 38 The benefits come from a combination of physical exercise and the stress reduction that ‘playing in the dirt’ provides.
39
Having dirt under your fingernails may be a sign of poor hygiene (卫生), but scientists say it could also be a mark of good health. Thanks to beneficial bacteria found in soil, gardening may improve your immune system, helping you get sick less and fight off infections easier, according to research that includes a 2015 study published in the international journal Immuno Targets and Therapy.
It increases co-ordination (配合) and strength.
Hand and finger strength, flexibility and coordination are essential for everyday tasks like opening jars, carrying packages and picking up children. 40
A. It boosts your immune system.
B. It helps you stay fit physically and mentally.
C. It's nice to get out in the garden on a sunny day to give it a tidy.
D. In fact, gardening can contribute to reducing the risk of a heart attack.
E. Gardening is a great way to maintain those fine motor(肌肉运动的) skills and muscles.

In today's world, where negativity often takes center stage, it's easy to overlook the simple acts of kindness that can bring joy to someone's life. I recently had a personal experience that reminded me of this during a particularly challenging week.
My week had been filled with problems, from work-related stress to unexpected bills and broken items. By the time I needed to go to the store for a few essentials, I was already feeling overwhelmed and at my breaking point. Despite my desire to just go home and relax, I made the trip across town to the store.
When I arrived, I found the parking lot packed, which only added to my frustration. To make matters worse, the person next to my intended parking spot seemed to think their small car was entitled (有资格) to take up two spaces. After finally finding a spot, I realized that I had left my purse, including my debit card (借记卡) and checkbook (支票簿), at home. Fortunately, I had a small amount of cash and my coupon (优惠券) book, so I decided to go inside and make the best of it.
The store was bustling with people, but I managed to find the items I needed and got in line to check out. However, the line seemed to move at a snail's pace, and my patience was wearing thin. As I waited, I couldn't help but feel my stress levels rising.
That's when I noticed an old lady standing behind me in line. She seemed to sense my anxiety and cast a kind smile at me. I awkwardly returned the smile and continued to wait. After a seemingly endless wait, it was finally my turn to check out.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
However, what happened next was out of my expectation. As the cashier scanned my items, I discovered that the total cost exceeded the amount of cash I had on hand. Embarrassment and confusion filled me as I attempted to explain my situation to the cashier, who seemed increasingly frustrated. Meanwhile, the patience of the people waiting behind me in line began to wear thin. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, a sense of hopelessness began to set in, and I contemplated having to return home to retrieve more money.
As I was about to return for more cash, I suddenly felt a tap on my shoulder. It was the elderly woman who had been standing behind me in line. With a warm smile, she handed me some money and reassuringly said, “Don't worry, dear. We all have tough days.” Her kindness deeply touched me, and I thanked her with all the sincerity I could muster before paying for my items. As I left the store, I felt a profound sense of gratitude and realized that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a significant impact on someone's day. This simple gesture of goodwill truly brightened my spirits, and it inspired me to pay it forward by helping others whenever I can.

M: Yeah, it really added to the action scenes.
W: Yes, but unfortunately that brings up a weakness in the film for me: the special effects. Again, it's just the same old stuff.
M: So, overall, how do you rate this movie
W: Well, I have to give it only two stars …a rating of “fair”. How about you
M: Well, I give it my highest rating ... four stars out of five!
W: Hmm. Well, that's all from us tonight. See you tomorrow and we’ll talk about a best-selling novel.

M: Hi there. I'm Tim Tanner. I am honored to be here today. I’ve appeared on lots of TV shows with my brother Sam Tanner as the singing twin brothers. People often ask us what it's like to be twins. Well, I was born ten minutes before Sam so I'm the older brother, although we do have a real older brother, Ken, who's a year older than us. We were born premature — we suddenly appeared in October rather than January. Ken's birthday is in December, so we' re pretty close in age.
Sam and I aren't completely the same, but even our dad makes mistakes sometimes, because there's hardly any difference in our hair, and we' re the same build. But as soon as we open our mouths, he’ll know which one it is.
In character we' re mostly similar — we’ve both always loved music, and we’ve always had a real interest in going out. However, people that know us say I'm not as confident as Sam is, which is probably true.
We are going to promote our new album Time Dance next week, which is quite different from our first one Soul Brothers. We’ve poured our hearts into it, and we'd be incredibly grateful for your support.
