Wildlife Conservation Volunteering
Wildlife conservation volunteering plays an important role in protecting endangered species like elephants from extinction due to habitat loss. Opportunities at rescue centers or reserves involve caring for injured wildlife, monitoring species for research, and anti-poaching (反偷猎) efforts.
Join us and you can make a difference and help preserve biodiversity!
● Best Places to Volunteer
Africa
If you want to experience African wildlife from up close, look at South Africa, Kenya, or Namibia for volunteer projects. Not only do they offer a great amount of wildlife on land, but some of them are also home to many sea creatures.
Latin America
If you are interested in volunteering with primates (灵长类动物) in their jungle habitats, look no further than Central and South America. Peru, Brazil and Ecuador all share parts of the Amazon rainforest.
● Who Can Volunteer
As long as you are willing to learn and treat the wild creatures with the necessary respect and caution, you are more than welcome to volunteer. It doesn’t matter if you have any related working experience before.
You need to speak at least basic English, the main language spoken at most projects. Some projects in Latin America will ask you to speak basic Spanish.
Besides, volunteer projects working with wild and more dangerous animals accept volunteers aged 18 but there is no age limit upwards — as long as you are physically fit and ready for a challenge, you are the perfect person to volunteer.
1. What is the aim of Wildlife Conservation Volunteering
A. To stop endangered wildlife from dying out.
B. To restore various wildlife habitats worldwide.
C. To conduct scientific research on injured wildlife.
D. To change biodiversity in volunteering destinations.
2. Which is a good place to volunteer with animals both on land and in the sea
A. Peru. B. Brazil. C. Ecuador. D. South Africa.
3. Which of the following is a requirement for all volunteers
A. The adult age requirement. B. Good physical condition.
C. Relevant working experience. D. Basic Spanish language skills.

I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet, I was blown away. I couldn’t imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.
Last May, I met Paul. He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu Yandu Dao (the Southern Silk Road), the travels of the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph Rock. He also talked of Xuanzang. Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism (新闻业).
I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28,2021, we set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep.
We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us; some gave us directions; some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.
Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came to a realization. Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other’s cultures.
4. What did the writer think of Paul’s travel plan at first
A. Surprised. B. Frightened. C. Confused. D. Disappointed.
5. What can we learn about Paul from Paragraph 2
A. He was Joseph Rock’s friend. B. He was a western journalist.
C. He came to China several times. D. He had a knowledge of China.
6. What does Paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul
A. They set off in high spirits. B. They satisfied the locals’ curiosity.
C. They built bonds with people. D. They honored the ancestors.
7. What is the main purpose of the writer’s writing the text
A. To share and reflect on a journey. B. To suggest a new way of travel.
C. To stress the importance of friendship. D. To introduce Chinese culture.

A recent study shows that every month has broken the temperature record of the previous for the past 12 months, indicating a clear and ongoing shift in-the global climate. Since June 2023, global average temperatures have been continuously rising, with the period between July 2023 and June 2024 being 1.64°C higher than pre-Industrial Revolution levels. This alarming trend is mainly driven by greenhouse gas emissions (排放) and the El Ni o climate phenomenon, which led to unusually high sea temperatures in the eastern and central equatorial (赤道的) Pacific.
Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), stressed that this is not just an abnormal statistic but a sign of huge climate change. He warned that unless greenhouse gas emissions are greatly reduced, we will continue to see new temperature records being set.
The 12-month new record has raised concerns about the possibility of crossing two key climate thresholds (阈值). Scientists warn that global warming of surpassing (超过) 2℃ above pre-Industrial Revolution levels would greatly increase the risk of destructive climate disasters. The 1.5℃ threshold is also important, as it brings the world closer to tipping points that could result in extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, floods, and ecosystem destruction.
The 2015 Paris Agreement, signed by nearly 200 countries, aims to limit global temperature rises to 1.5°C and keep them well below 2°C. While the current findings are concerning, the report notes that these limits are long-term goals, meaning that the pledges (承诺) have not yet been officially broken.
However, researchers predict that record-high temperatures are likely to continue, with a 95% chance that 2024 will overtake 2023 as the warmest year since records began in the mid-1800s, although it is hoped that the end of El Ni o might bring some relief.
8. What is the primary cause of the rising global temperatures
A. Greatly reduced rainfall.
B. Abnormal ocean currents.
C. The ongoing industrial development.
D. Greenhouse gas emissions and El Ni o.
9. Why is the 1.5℃ threshold considered important by scientists
A. It marks the end of the El Ni o climate phenomenon.
B. Going beyond it might bring about global climate disasters.
C. It means greenhouse gas emissions have been greatly reduced.
D. It is the average global temperature before the Industrial Revolution.
10. What can be inferred about 2024’s temperature
A. It will match 2023’s temperature.
B. It will likely break records again.
C. It will drop because of El Ni o ending.
D. It will return to pre - Industrial Revolution levels.
11. Which of the following serves as the best title
A. Rising Sea Levels Threaten Coastal Areas
B. Efforts to Reduce Greenhouse Emissions pay off
C. Global Warming Reaches New 12-Month Record
D. Paris Agreement Successfully Limits Climate Change
D
Can you imagine life before today’s modern conveniences Try to picture the world before refrigerators.
That may be difficult! The first electric refrigerator was made in 1913. Before then, people found other ways to store their food: In cold areas, ancient people froze their food in ice and snow while people in warmer places dried food in sunlight. Experts say these early practices allowed people to settle and form communities.
One advanced method of food storage arose in Persia around 400 BC. People there stored food in structures called Yakhchal. These were domed buildings made from mud brick (泥砖) to keep ice frozen during even the warmest summer months. The structures, many of which still stand today, were insulated by walls up to six feet thick.
During the Middle Ages, people preserved food by salting, smoking and drying. Vegetables and meat were often salted. Many fruits were dried or turned into preserves. These foods could then be stored in cool places, like cellars and caves, allowing people to save food for times of need.
Later, buildings called ice houses or ice pits (坑) built upon the idea of the Yakhchal. They were cooled by an underground pit full of ice. A larger above-ground building covered the pit. Ice houses were very common by the 1800s. This is also when ice delivery became commonplace, especially during summer. At the end of the 19th century, many people kept their food fresh in iceboxes made of wood. These cabinets held large blocks of ice to keep food cool. By the 1930s, many people were using electric refrigerators to keep food fresh. Since then, growth in technology has led these machines to become more advanced. Many refrigerators today come with built-in water filters and ice makers. Some people even choose smart refrigerators that can help them with meal planning and grocery shopping.
Does your family use a refrigerator to keep food fresh Maybe you even practice other preservation methods. You might can fruit. Or maybe you salt vegetables. People today have many choices when it comes to storing food!
12. In what order is the text developed
A. Space. B. Time. C. Importance. D. Preference.
13. What method was used in ancient Persia for food preservation
A. Yakhchal. B. Iceboxes. C. Ice houses. D. Drying in sunlight.
14. What does the underlined word “insulated” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Built with windows for fresh air. B. Covered with thick ice or snow.
C. Protected from outside heat or cold. D. Designed to store large amounts of food.
15. Why does the author mention canning and salting at the end
A. To show old methods are outdated. B. To explain why refrigerators are necessary.
C. To highlight the variety of preservation methods. D. To discuss ancient food preservation techniques.

Most of you have probably felt this before — you wait a long time for something, but when it gets close, you’re afraid of what’s coming. That’s exactly how I felt before my first day of senior high school. I worked hard to pass the tests and had an interview with the headmaster to get into this famous school. When it was finally time to start, I couldn’t sleep the night before because I was so nervous about how I would look in front of everyone.
It was Monday morning. I was too excited to sleep the night before, so I arrived at school half an hour early. I walked nervously through the hallway. After about 15 minutes, the hallway was packed with students. The teachers seemed too busy to notice me. I knew which room I needed to go to and had already checked that it was open, but I was hesitant (犹豫不决的) to go in and stood alone. The students moved around me as if I wasn’t there, and I felt disappointed and lonely.
Suddenly a well-dressed boy got close to me. He introduced himself as Thompson and asked if I was lost and if he could help me with anything. I realized how kind he was, and he was exactly who I had wished for a minute before, but I was too nervous to be friendly. Instead of accepting his help and making friends with him, I told him to mind his own business and that I was old enough to find my class without anyone’s help.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Luckily, the boy smiled at me and went away without getting angry.

【答案】 Luckily, the boy smiled at me and went away without getting angry. I felt a wave of shame wash over me. I realized my response had been uncalled for, especially from someone who was trying to help. As I stood there, I wished I could take my words back. The bell rang, signaling the start of the first period, and I reluctantly walked into my classroom, still feeling embarrassed about my earlier reaction.
Unexpectedly, Thompson walked into the same classroom. My heart sank, and I hoped he wouldn’t recognize me as the rude boy from the hallway.
