It was built in March 1987. It is to save and protect the endangered animals, especially the endangered pandas. It is a non-profit organization（非营利性组织）that delicates to（从事于） wildlife research， captive breeding （人工繁殖）of the pandas and educational tourism（旅游）.

Scientists say there are now fewer than 2, 000 pandas living in the forests. Another 700 or so live in zoos or research centers in China and other countries. Many years ago, there were a lot more bamboo forests and pandas in China, but then humans started to cut down these forests.
