蜻蜓是一种不完全变态昆虫,属于蜻蜓目,具有独特的生物学特征和生态习性。 蜻蜓的翅膀发达,后翅基部比前翅基部稍大,休息时四翅展开,平放于两侧。它们的头部灵活,触角短,复眼发达,具有3个单眼,咀嚼式口器强大有力。蜻蜓的腹部细长,足细而弱,上有钩刺。蜻蜓的稚虫短粗,具直肠鳃,无尾鳃。
蜻蜓主要栖息于湖泊、池塘、溪流和湿地附近,常雌雄成群,夜伏昼出。由于眼睛的特殊构造,白天视力非常好,夜晚视力较弱。它们是凶猛的捕猎者,猎物主要是小鱼和昆虫幼虫。蜻蜓没有产卵器,通常在池塘上方盘旋或沿小溪往返飞行,在飞行中将卵撒落水中。
