Being a singer in her school music group as a teenager, Bogan used to love singing along with songs by her favorite musicians. Unfortunately, the doctors found there was a tumor (肿瘤) in her head.
Bogan was told that an operation (手术) could be a method but it could have some side effects. Last August, doctors gave her an operation to remove the tumor. The operation was a success. But after the doctors removed the equipment, a bad thing happened — Bogan had trouble speaking. Since then, Bogan has been working with experts to change the situation, but there is no sign that she will ever be able to speak like she used to.
Last month, Bogan got her voice back in a way. Experts created a tool — Voice Engine — for her using AI. She uses a text-to-voice app on her phone so she can now do things like ordering her favorite coffee at Starbucks. She uses it by writing words in her phone and holding it up at the coffee shop so servers can hear her.
The app uses OpenAI’s voice tool. Programmers trained the app using a 15-second sound recording from a cooking video Bogan made as a teenager. Most of the video had cooking sounds, but that was all they could use. And it was enough.
The app makes mistakes, but people who know Bogan do not seem worried. They are just happy to hear her voice. As for Bogan herself, she said it helped make her as confident as she was before all this happened, which meant a lot to her. She uses the app about 40 times per day, and she believes the technology will progress over time so that when she is older, she does not have to depend on the voice she had as a teenager.
Jeff Harris is OpenAI’s project leader for Voice Engine. He said although the company is very limited in who they are giving the technology to, because they want to be sure everyone whose voice is being used has given permission (许可), this is only a short-term measure. In the near future, it will see more and more users.
4. What caused Bogan the trouble in speaking
A. Overusing her voice. B. Failure to remove the tumor.
C. The doctors’ carelessness. D. Side effects of an operation.
5. How did Bogan partly get her voice back
A. By receiving another operation. B. By using a special AI tool.
C. By working with experts. D. By keeping practicing speaking continuously.
6. What is the most important about the app to Bogan
A. It makes few mistakes. B. It improves her confidence.
C. It exactly copies her voice. D. It can be used unlimited times per day.
7. What is Jeff Harris’s attitude towards the future of Voice Engine
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Mixed. D. Uncaring.

Deep in the Mexican forest at the Yucatán Peninsula, archaeologists have made an exciting discovery — a hidden historical treasure. In the ancient Maya city of Cobá, a huge stone slab (石碑) was found.
The stone slab was discovered at the bottom of a pool in the past. It is really large, with an area of 11 square meters (118 square feet). What makes this slab different from others of its kind is the writing on it. There are 123 glyphs (象形文字) made into its surface. They are made in the shape of “L” to fit the shape of the stone.
After examination, these glyphs describe that a town called Keh Witz Nal was built on 12 May 569 AD. What’ s more, they also mention a formerly unknown Maya ruler named K’awiil Ch’ak Chéen. This name has something to do with K’awiil, the Maya god of lightning.
The city of Cobá, which is now in the state of Quintana Roo, was once successful but is now in ruins. The Maya had started building it as early as 50 BC and people lived there continuously. The most recent buildings of it were built between 1200 AD and 1500 AD. At its best time, it was a busy cultural center with around 50,000 people living there.
Cobá is one of the few archaeological sites that still have a Maya name, Ko’ba, which means uncalm waters. The place is full of woodcuts and sculptures (雕塑). These things can tell us a lot about the spiritual and artistic lives of the Maya who used to live there.
Before this discovery, 14 rulers of Cobá had been known, and three of them were women. One of the women ruled for 40 years. Thanks to the new information in the highly stylized writing, the researchers could make sure that many of these rulers took the name of the god K’ awiil.
There will be a more detailed study of the writing in the future. But right now, the archaeological team is mainly concentrating on how to stop the stone from getting damaged more by water or others.
8. What about the stone slab makes it special
A. The words on it. B. The size of it.
C. The place where it was discovered. D. The shape in which it was made.
9. What does the writing on the stone slab show
A. The names of Maya gods. B. The building date of a town.
C. The development of glyphs. D. The daily life of the Maya people.
10. What does the text say about the city of Cobá
A. It was famous for its large collection of sculptures.
B. Its population stayed unchanged for some time.
C. It had a history of more than 12 centuries.
D. Its rulers shared the name of K’awiil.
11. What is the focus of the archaeological team at the moment
A. Searching for more similar slabs.
B. Finding more information about Cobá.
C. Protecting the stone slab from further damage.
D. Translating the writing on the slab into other languages.

Fish farming is a form of aquaculture (水产养殖), in which fish are raised in pools to be sold as food. They take up over half of the world’s fish supply and are key for meeting the needs of an ever-growing human population. However, fish farms now face a big challenge.
The uneaten food and waste made by the thousands of sea animals limited to small spaces often build up to harmful levels. Every year a large number of fish die because of sicknesses. Besides, the phosphorous and nitrogen that come out from the waste can cause algae (藻类) to grow a lot. These algae take up the O2 in the water. This makes it hard for the fish to breathe and they can die. Right now, fish farms fix these problems by using recirculating (再循环) systems. These systems clean the water and deal with the waste. But it costs a lot to put them in and they are hard to keep in good working order.
Now, some fish farms are turning to sea cucumbers (海参) for help. The bottom-animals are often called the ocean’s “cleaners”. They feed on very tiny animals, algae, and the waste on the seabed. Even better, the sand they take in will come out again in the form of CaCO3, which helps support the growth of coral reefs (珊瑚礁). Sea cucumbers are considered a delicious food in some parts of the world. Once their numbers grow, they could also bring an extra income source for fish farms.
Adding sea cucumbers to fish farms is part of a bigger plan to make them into balanced and good-for-long-time ecosystems (生态系统). Experts believe it can be achieved if we grow many different kinds of ocean animals from different parts of the food chain.
“We’re trying to mimic natural environments,” says ocean researcher Chris Pearce. “So in such environments, the ocean animals are just doing what they do naturally out in the wild. But when we put them together with other kinds of animals, they are helping the ecosystem.”
12. What is the main problem that fish farms face
A. Unexplained death of fish. B. High cost of fish food.
C. Waste management. D. Strong competition.
13. Why are sea cucumbers introduced by some fish farms
A. They take in CaCO3. B. They do good to the algae.
C. They serve as food for fish. D. They deal with waste on the seabed.
14 What does the underlined word “mimic” in the last paragraph mean
A. Copy. B. Explore. C. Protect. D. Clean.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Balanced Ecosystems Are Out of Reach
B. Recirculating Systems Bring New Hope for Fish Farms
C. The World’s Fish Supply Is Facing Greater Challenges
D. Sea Cucumbers Help with Fish Farms’ Waste Treatment

After six months of searching, I hadn’t found a car for my sixteen-year-old son Marcus, who just wanted a black car. Everything I’d seen required repairs, was a different color, or went above our 87,000 budget (预算).
My drive to work was almost an hour each day and I often stayed late. Marcus’s dad, Robert, suffered from a serious illness and hardly drove. Marcus needed to attend daily football practice, weekly team meetings and dinners, as well as other after-school activities, forcing him to take rides with friends.
One evening, Marcus arrived home in a teammate’s new black car. When the teammate DaVaris rolled down the window to say hello, that new-car smell got into the air. I bent inside to look at the brown, soft leather seats.
“Very nice,” I said.
His face brightened with pride. “Thanks. Marcus said you were looking for a car.”
“I’m sure we’ll find something soon,” I spoke with confidence I didn’t feel. It wouldn’t be a new car, for sure. I turned to Marcus. An eager look crossed his face as DaVaris waved and backed out of the driveway. That look hurt my heart.
The next day, I ran into the mother of one of Marcus’s classmates — a doctor. The family had also been trying to find a car for their son. “One of my patients wants to sell his car, but my son doesn’t like it,” she told me. I asked what type of car, and it turned out to be at the top of my wish list. “Can you arrange for me to see it ”
The next day, Robert and I went to the home of the elderly man who was selling the car. It was shiny black, with hardly a scratch (划痕). It only covered 12,000 miles although it was six years old! Having experienced so many failures before, I was almost afraid to test-drive it. But the engine made a normal sound and the speeding was smooth. This car had been well maintained (保养). There remained one question, a big one — the price.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Back at the owner’s house, we climbed out of the car.

【答案】Dear Tom,
How have you been lately I’m preparing for an English speech competition with the topic of “Nothing is out of reach for the youth”. It will be held in our school hall next month.
I’ve been working hard on it. I’ve collected a lot of inspiring stories about young people achieving great things. However, I’m facing some difficulties. I have trouble expressing my ideas precisely in English and making my speech vivid and attractive. Also, I get really nervous when thinking about speaking in front of a large audience.
I know you are excellent at public speaking. Could you share some tips on how to improve my language expression and overcome my anxiety I would be extremely grateful for your help.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】范文
Back at the owner’s house, we climbed out of the car. “How much are you asking ” I steeled myself for the man’s answer. He studied his car as if unwilling to part with it. He explained he was already ninety-three and that his family wanted him to quit driving for the sake of safety. He placed a hand on the car to steady himself. His stare met mine. “This car is worth more than what I’m asking. But I’ll let you have it for $7,000.”
It was the exact amount (金额) we’d saved! A block formed in my throat as I extended my hand. “Deal.” I went to the bank and withdrew the money to pay him. Robert drove our car home. Less than an hour before Marcus returned home, I hid the car in the garage. When he arrived, I opened the garage door. Sunlight reflected from the black car. Just as I brought the camera to my eye, Marcus turned to me with a wide smile and a double thumbs-up. Click! I caught that moment of joy.
