Brad closed the door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother. Expecting a whole day to relax, he was
thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favourite TV talk show on his first day off in months. “This will
be like a walk in the park,” he’ d told his wife. “I’ ll look after the kids, and you can go visit your mom.”
Things started well, but just after eight o’ clock, his three little “good kids”—— Mike, Randy, and Alex—
came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy.” When food had not appeared within thirty
seconds, Randy began using his spoon on Alex 's head as if it were a drum. Alex started to shout loudly in time to the
beat. Mike chanted “Where's my toast, where's my toast” in the background. Brad realised his newspaper would have
to wait for a few seconds.
Life became worse after breakfast. Mike wore Randy’ s underwear on his head. Randy locked himself in the
bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wet his pants. Nobody could find clean socks, although
they were before their very eyes. Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket
of clean clothes. Brad knew the talk show had already started.
By ten o’ clock, things were out of control. Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and
butter. Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his colour pencils. Randy, thankfully,
appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam
straight from the bottle with his hands. Brad realised that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible.
At exactly 11:17, Brad called the daycare centre. “I suddenly have to go into work and my wife's away. Can I
bring the boys over in a few minutes ” The answer was obviously “yes” because Brad was smiling.

B. Because he had to take his wife back home.
C. Because he found it hard to manage his boys.
D Because he wanted to clean up his house.

Women are friendly. But men are more competitive. Why Researchers have found it's all down to the hormone
oxytocin(荷尔蒙催生素). Although known as the love hormone, affects the sexes differently.
“Women tend to be social in their behavior. They often share with others. But men tend 1be competitive. They
第2页/共7页
are trying to improve their social status(地位),” said Professor Ryan.
Generally, people believe that the hormone oxytocin is let out in our body in various social situations and our
body creates a large amount of it during positive social interactions(互动)such as falling in love or giving birth.
But in a previous(先前的) experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during
negative social interactions such as envy(嫉妒).
Further researches showed that in men the hormone oxytocin improves the ability to recognize competitive
relationships, but in women it raises the ability to recognize friendship.
Professor Ryan's recent experiment used 62 men and women aged 20 to 37.
Half of the participants(参与者) received oxytocin. The other half received placebo(安慰剂).
After a week, the two groups switched with participants. They went through the same procedure with the other
material.
Following each treatment, they were shown some video pictures with different social interactions. Then they
were asked to analyze the relationships by answering some questions. The questions were about telling friendship
from competition. And their answers should be based on body language.
The results suggested that, after treatment with oxytocin, men 's ability to correctly recognize competitive
relationships improved, but in women it was the ability to correctly recognize friendship that got better.
Professor Ryan thus concluded: “Our experiment proves(证明) that the hormone oxytocin can raise people’ s
abilities to better distinguish(区分) different social interactions. And the behavior differences between men and
women are caused by biological factors that are mainly hormonal.”
8. What causes men and women to behave differently according to the text
A. Body language. B. Social status. C. Oxytocin. D. Placebo.
9. What can we learn from Professor Ryan's previous experiment
A. Oxytocin improves our abilities to understand people's behavior differences.
B. Our body produces oxytocin when we feel unhappy about others’ success.
C. Our body lets out oxytocin when we are deep in love.
D. Oxytocin affects our behavior in a different way.
10. Why did Professor Ryan conduct the recent experiment
A. To test people's understanding of body language.
B. To know people's different abilities to answer questions.
C. To know the differences between friendship and competition.
D. To test the effect of oxytocin on the ability to recognize social interactions.
11. The writer develops the text by
A. describing his own experiences B. explaining people s behaviors
C. discussing research experiments D. distinguishing sexual differences
D
Few laws are so effective that you can see results just days after they take effect. But in the nine days since the
federal cigarette tax(香烟税) more than doubled—— to $1.01 per pack—smokers have jammed telephone “quit lines”
across the country seeking to kick the habit.
This is not a surprise to public health supporters. They've studied the effect of state tax increases for years,
第3页/共7页
finding that smokers, especially teens, are price sensitive(敏感). Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fights every
tax increase.
The only wonder is that so many states insist on(坚持) closing their ears to the message. Tobacco(烟草) taxes
improve public health, they raise money and most particularly, they prevent people from taking up the habit as teens,
which is when nearly all smokers are addicted. Yet the rate of taxation varies widely.
In Manhattan, for example, which has the highest tax in the nation, a pack of Marlboro Light Kings cost $10.06
at one drugstore Wednesday. In Charleston, S. C., where the 7-cent-a-pack tax is the lowest in the nation, the price
was $4.78.
The influence is obvious.
In New York, high school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys—13.8%, far below the national average.
By comparison, 26% of high school students smoke in Kentucky. Other low-tax states have similarly depressing teen-
smoking records.
Hal Rogers, Representative from Kentucky, like those who are against high tobacco taxes, argues that the
burden(负担) of the tax falls on low-income(低收入) Americans “who choose to smoke.”
That's true. But there is more reason in keeping future generations of low-income workers from getting
hooked(上瘾) in the first place. As for today's adults, if the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend
on their families, cut their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better.
12. The text is mainly about .
A. the differences in tobacco tax rate B. the effect of tobacco tax increase
C. the rate of teen smoking D. the price of cigarettes
13. What does the writer think is a surprise
A. Tobacco taxes improve public health.
B. Teen smokers are price sensitive.
C.、Tobacco industry fights the tax rise.
D. Some states still keep the tobacco tax low.
14. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Adults will depend more on their families.
B. Future generations will be hooked on smoking.
C. The new tax will be helpful in the long run.
D. Low-income Americans are more likely to fall ill.

阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep.
His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn't take my eyes
off the coin changer fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin
changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order,
my mother would pen a note—“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”— and place it in the box along with
the empty bottle. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.
All of this was about more than convenience(方便). There existed a close relationship between families and
their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the
box indoors, so that the milk wouldn't freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our
kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus
making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been
practical to have a delivery service.
Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and
planted it on the back porch(门廊). Every so often my son's friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my
boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.
45. What did Mr. Basille do when he noticed I couldn't take my eyes off the coin changer
第6页/共7页
