They don’t always get a proper place in the history books, but women have played a key role in wilderness exploration, the protection of the natural environment and our understanding of nature.
Caroline Dormon turned her degree in literature into a job with the Louisiana forestry department. Using opportunities provided by this job, she convinced the government to set aside land for a national forest in her home state. The result Kisatchie National Forest was established in 1930. Dormon was also an author, writing books about trees, flowers, birds, and Native American culture.
Annie Montague Alexander was born in Hawaii into a family that made their fortune with sugar. In her younger years, she traveled widely, training as a painter in Paris and studying nursing. Later, she became interested in paleontology (古生物学). She used her wealth to provide money for exploration, but unlike other benefactors (赞助人), she went along with the scientists when they went out into the wilderness.
Hallie Daggett was the first woman to work as a fire lookout for the U. S. Forest Service. Born in 1878, Daggett was a perfect outdoorswoman who could hunt, fish, and survive in the wild. She needed these skills for her job watching out for wildfires in Klamath National Forest. Daggett worked alone at a lookout post on a nearly 6,500-foot peak. The post could only be reached on foot, and the climb from the base outpost took three hours.
Anna Botsford Comstock is best known for her nature illustrations (插图). Anyone who enjoyed taking nature field trips in school owes a thank you to stock also pushed for outdoor education in public schools in New York after seeing how well her students at Cornell University — where she was the university’ s first female professor — responded to spending class time seeing the subjects of their study in their natural environment.
1. What did Dormon and Daggett have in common
A. Being noted for their paintings. B. Being remembered for survival skills.
C. Working for protecting the forest. D. Writing books about trees and flowers.
2. How did Alexander differ from other research benefactors
A. She trained painters in Paris. B. She spent a lot of time on nursing.
C. She preferred to travel alone. D. She joined in wilderness exploration.
3. Who was Cornell’s first female professor
A. Hallie Daggett. B. Anna Botsford Comstock.
C. Caroline Dormon. D. Annie Montague Alexander.

As the Head of the Brearley School, I have to guide the school through challenging times. I often find inspiration in the words of two teachers — Rabbi Burger and Parker Palmer.
In his article Learning and Teaching From the Heart During Troubling Times, Rabbi Burger talks about the importance of balancing strong beliefs with kindness. He learned this from his teacher, Elie Wiesel, a Nobel Prize winner. As a teacher, Professor Wiesel believed in the power of literature, and the study of history to make a difference in the lives of students. “My goal as a teacher,” he often told his students, “is to humanize. Whatever you learn, remember: The learning must make you more, not less, human.”
Students have many questions in their lives right now. As they grow older, their questions tend to become more complex (复杂的), especially after seeing troubling events. They try to understand these situations by finding the causes and working out solutions. However, we must explain that fully understanding these events is nearly impossible. We live with the fact that terrible things happen, which can seem unthinkable. Moreover, we must recognize that behind these tough questions are the students’ feelings. In my experience, this is one painful but important way children build their sense of humanity.
In a conversation titled Turning to Face the Dark, Palmer discusses how heartbreak can change us. He suggests that we can take our heartbreak and use it to become a bigger and better person.
Teachers play an important role in this painful but necessary growth. We may not have all the answers, but by inviting students to ask questions and express their feelings — whether anger, fear, or sadness — we show them that it’s okay to struggle with life’s challenges. This struggle is part of what it means to be human.
4. What is the goal of education according to Wiesel
A. To teach students to be human. B. To score high marks in the class.
C. To have a strong belief in others. D. To read plenty of classic stories.
5. How does the author of the text view these tough questions in students’ lives
A. They show the world is in trouble. B. They are a sign of students’ weakness.
C. They are a reminder of terrible events. D. They help students’ personal growth.
6. What is Palmer’s opinion about heartbreak
A. It should be unlocked by parents. B. It can be turned into a positive force.
C. It can be shared with our friends. D. It should be regarded as punishment.
7. What does the last paragraph suggest
A. Meaningless learning process must be avoided.
B. Students will value their memories in high school.
C. People have the right to question the reply they get.
D. Teachers should guide students to express themselves.
C
Cortni Borgerson, a primatologist, and Pascal Elison, a Masoala National Park tour guide, were rushing through the forest in search of a red ruffed lemur (红领狐猴) in the area of northeastern Madagascar. They tried to find the lemur after hearing its call.
Wild lemurs are found only in Madagascar, where they help spread seeds and pollinate plants, keeping the environment healthy and balanced. However, the red ruffed lemur is endangered because of hunting (猎杀).
While hunting lemurs has been not allowed by the law since the 1960s, people hunt and eat them when other foods are not enough. Nearly 90 percent of locals have eaten lemur, according to Borgerson’s research. Red ruffed lemurs are the most likely to end up at people’s dinner tables, because they’re relatively easy to catch and are considered particularly tasty. What’s more, in Malagasy cities, lemur meat is now offered as a high-end food.
To help save lemurs from hunting without leaving Masoala communities hungry, Borgerson turned to bugs (昆虫), a specific type called sakondry. They’ve been a food source in Madagascar for at least 400 years, and could be a game changer for lemurs.
Why sakondry These bugs, known for their meaty taste, are easy to farm. Borgerson has taught local people how to farm them by planting lima bean crops that attract the bugs. The bugs grow quickly and don’t harm the plants much. The only real catch is that the plants may not survive well everywhere in the country because of climate differences.
Sakondry are so well received that sometimes they’ re even sold at prices similar to beef. Borgerson says her program isn’t focused on business sales but on saving lemurs. In just three years, sakondry farming has already helped cut lemur hunting by at least 50% in the communities. Borgerson plans to bring the bug farming to at least 3,000 more households in northeastern Madagascar next year.
8. What can we know about wild lemurs in Madagascar
A They tend to fight for food. B. They often attack local people.
C. They support healthy ecosystems. D. They are hard to hunt in the wild.
9. Why does Borgerson teach the locals to farm sakondry
A. To cut the prices of farm produce. B. To offer them a replacement for lemurs.
C. To break the habit of eating bugs. D. To encourage them to run a business.
10. Which of the following best explains “catch” underlined in paragraph 5
A. A clear message. B. A similar model. C. A hidden problem. D. A great advantage.
11. What can be inferred about Borgerson’s program
A. It is effective in saving lemurs. B. It stops people buying beef.
C. It is mainly for business sales. D. It increases the cost of hunting.
D
Sitting at your desk all day may put you at greater risk for heart disease — even if you exercise often, according to new research.
Dr. Ezim Ajufo, a cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, said that it’s important to limit sitting time, regardless of how active you are. Dr. Keith Diaz from Columbia University added that more studies are needed to determine (确定) how much sitting is too much.
The study looked at data from around 90,000 people who wore activity trackers for a week. Researchers compared their sitting and active times with later diagnoses (诊断) of conditions, like heart attacks, and heart failure. The results showed that sitting for long periods is related to a higher risk of heart problems. The study also suggested that sitting more than 10.6 hours a day should be avoided as a starting point for health guidelines.
Sitting too long is harmful because it affects the muscles, which help control blood sugar and fat levels. Dr. Diaz said, “To do their job well, muscles need movement. Taking movement breaks is a way to give your muscles the stimulation (刺激) they need to do their jobs.”
For people working in an office all day, those 10.6 hours of sitting can add up quickly. A standing desk may not solve everything since standing still doesn’t stimulate the muscles enough. Dr. Diaz recommended riding a bike or holding a meeting over a walk. He also suggested getting up and walking for just a few minutes every hour or when you finish one task before moving to the next.
The research also showed that evening workouts don’t completely make up for sitting too long during the day. “But don’t be disheartened about activity. Exercise is still always a good idea and benefits people in so many ways,” Dr. Diaz said.
12. What did the study find about too much sitting
A. It might cause heart disease. B. It has changed health guidelines.
C. It can stimulate the muscles. D. It is a big trouble for the elderly.
13. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. How to remain energetic. B. How to push people into exercising.
C. How to get moving at work. D. How to chair a meeting in the office.
14. What is Dr. Diaz’s attitude to the role of workouts
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Worried. D. Positive.
15. Where is this text probably taken from
A. A PE textbook. B. A health magazine. C. An exercise plan. D. A medical test report.

In general, it is a good idea to have fire-extinguishing equipment on hand to prevent the growth of small fires that could be caused by machines.
____19____
While having fun outdoors, ensure that you enjoy yourself in a safe environment. One such example includes making sure that campfires are completely put out. If fireworks are being lit, it is important to take wildfire prevention measures. Fireworks should not be lit in or near forests. Additionally, water the grass near the fireworks area and don’t start fireworks when it is windy. ____20____.

The sound of the starting gun echoed (回荡) through the air, and Mia’s heart was racing. She was on the starting line of the state track championship, holding her breath. The other runners around her were focused, their eyes on the track ahead. This was the moment Mia had worked for her entire life—a defining moment, one that could change everything. However, the journey leading up to this moment was far from easy.
Mia had started running when she was eight years old. From the very beginning, she dreamed of winning a state championship. For years, she trained harder than anyone, pushing her body to the limit, always aiming for a bigger improvement. But two months ago, she faced the worst setback of her life—— she pulled her hamstring (腘绳肌) during training for the big game.
The injury forced her to stop running completely for weeks. The pain and disappointment were unbearable. Every time she tried to get back on the track, her body felt weak. She couldn’t shake the feeling of uncertainty. What if I could never run again What if I missed my one shot at the championship
Her coach believed in her abilities, though. “The journey to success isn’t just about talent,” he told her one evening as they reviewed her recovery plan. “It’s about believing in yourself even when times get hard. Focus on getting better step by step.”
Mia kept those words in mind as she started her slow, painful recovery. She focused on her physical therapy (理疗), rebuilding strength with each passing day. Slowly, she started to trust her body again. Every workout was a challenge. Her muscles burned, and her legs shook, but Mia never gave up.
Now, standing at the starting line, her journey felt both unreal and achievable. She had trained through pain, through self-doubt, and through tears. Today, she would prove that all the efforts she had made were worthwhile.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The sound of the starting gun pulled Mia away from her thoughts.

【答案】The sound of the starting gun pulled Mia away from her thoughts. Mia began to run, keeping an even and controlled breath. The first lap went effortlessly. As Mia neared the halfway point, her legs were tired, but she refused to stop. “You can do this,” she thought. “One lap at a time.” The last lap came, and Mia pushed harder. The sound of her breathing filled her ears, and the finish line came into view. With just a few meters to go, Mia summoned every ounce of strength she had left.
Finally, Mia crossed the finish line, with the crowed cheering. Breathless, she looked around, hearing that sound of thunderous applause. Tears welled up in her eyes. She made it. Mia stood on the podium later that day, holding her medal high. She had overcome pain, injury, doubt and fear. This honor was about more than a medal—— it was about the belief that a strong will could help one get over difficulties. The road to success was never easy, but Mia knew one thing: Sometimes the hardest moments lead to the sweetest victories.
