An 11-year-old boy has become a hero since his quick thinking saved two lives. Davyon Johnson helped save a choking classmate and a woman attempting to escape a fire. On Dec. 8, 2021 the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Department honored Johnson for his heroics at a meeting. At the event, Undersheriff Greg Martin gave the sixth-grader a certificate naming him an honorary deputy for the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office. “We are all so proud of you, Johnson!!” wrote the sheriff’s office in a post on Facebook on Dec. 14, 2021.
The Muskogee Public Schools recognized Davyon Johnson during the meeting Tuesday. Principal Latricia Dawkins considered Johnson a hero in an interview. “He always says that he wants to be an emergency medical technician. So he put that desire into action and immediately saved that young man,” Dawkins said, adding that Johnson “is just a kind soul and liked by students and teachers”.
The first incident happened during the school day. Johnson jumped into action after one of his classmates accidentally swallowed a water bottle cap and was choked (窒息) by it after attempting to unscrew (拧开) it with his mouth. Johnson immediately ran to the child and performed the Heimlich maneuver. Dawkins said, “From the account of the witnesses, when he did it, the bottle cap came out.” Johnson said he learned how to do the Heimlich maneuver on YouTube, and suggested others do the same.
Johnson’s heroism didn’t end there. After school, during the day after he saved his classmate, Johnson spotted a woman attempting to escape from a burning home. He quickly realized the worried woman was moving slowly and ran across the street to help her. “She was a disabled lady and being a good citizen, I should help her leave,” Johnson said.
LaToya, the boy’s mother, said, “I don’t feel surprised at my son’s actions. I’m just a proud mom.”
4. What is Johnson’s dream
A. To be a chemistry teacher. B. To be a fashion designer.
C. To be an aircraft engineer. D. To be an emergency medical technician.
5. When did Johnson save the woman

C. On Dec. 8, 2021. D. On Dec. 14, 2021.
6. What is the Heimlich maneuver
A. A way to calm a person who is angry. B. A way to help a person who can’t walk.
C A way to save a person who is choking. D. A way to improve a person’s spoken language.
7. Why did the woman walk slowly
A. The heavy smoke blocked her view. B. The way was seriously blocked.
C. She had a physical disability. D. She was too frightened to walk.

Nobody knows the value of a good doll better than Jandrisevits. “Dolls have a power we don’t completely understand,” she said. It’s a conclusion she came to while working as a social worker using dolls to help her young clients adapt to their changing medical situations. Many of the kids saw themselves in those dolls. But for the kids missing a limb or who had lost their hair, there were none they could relate to.
So, seven years ago, when a friend revealed that her child was stuck in self-doubt and self-distrust, Jandrisevits, now 49, knew what might help the youth through this potentially challenging period. “It’s hard to tell a kid, ‘You are perfect the way you are,’ and to build self-esteem (自尊) that way, but never offer them anything that looks like them,”she says.
Jandrisevits went about changing that. She crafted a doll by hand — using fabric, stitching, and markers — that resembled (像) her friend’s child and sent it off. After the friend posted a photo online of the happy child and doll, another woman asked Jandrisevits to make a doll that looked like her baby, who was missing a leg.
Word spread, and soon Jandrisevits was making dolls for children with scars, birthmarks, facial deformities(畸形), — in short, a doll that looked like them. She quit her job and started a nonprofit, A Doll Like Me.
Working out of her home in Milwaukee, from photos sent by parents or caregivers, it takes Jandrisevits roughly three days to craft only one doll. A GoFundMe page helps her cover costs and allows her to donate her services. She hasn’t charged for a doll since she began her nonprofit.
In all, she’s made more than 400 dolls. The waiting list is long, but Jandriscvits will never give up. As she explains on her GoFundMe page, “Every kid, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, medical issue, or body type, should look into the sweet face of a doll and see their own.”
8. What made Jandrisevits realize the value of dolls
A. The influence of dolls on her. B. Her working experience.
C. The changing medical situations. D. Her relation to the unlucky kids.
9. What does the underlined word ―that‖ refer to in paragraph 3
A. Children’s concern about their looks.
B. The problems faced by the child of a friend.
C. The challenging period the youth are going through.
D. The fact that words alone fail to help build self-esteem.
10. What can be inferred about Jandrisevits’ making dolls
A. It targets children with mental problems. B. It is time-consuming but meaningful.
C. It is thought poorly of by people. D. It brings in a good fortune.
11. Which of the following best describes Jandrisevits
A. Creative and caring. B. Ambitious and devoted.
C. Considerate and sensitive. D. Knowledgeable and generous.

The future of the city is here. Sidewalk Labs, a company owned by Alphabet, won a competition to design a neighborhood by Lake Ontario. The competition was held as a way to improve the buildings, public spaces, and transportation. In total, the planning phase should last one year.
The city of Toronto has promised $ 1.25 billion for roads, sidewalks, electricity, water, and so on. Sidewalk Labs has already put $ 50 million into the project. Doctoroff says he is not worried about money — profit can be made from the technology and development. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also says the project will bring well-paying jobs.
The neighborhood has already been given the name “Quayside”. It will include various scientific technologies connected with environmental improvement such as heated sidewalk, bike paths to melt snow, self-driving buses, shared-ride taxi robots and narrower streets with fewer cars and more room for public spaces like parks. There will also be energy systems, changeable traffic lights, and continuous improvement through collecting and analyzing data from sensors (传感器) for monitoring traffic flow, noise levels, air quality, energy usage, travel patterns, and waste output.
As for construction, the buildings will be made of plastic instead of wood or steel, to make them more affordable and easier to change. Underground passages will be used for trash collection, package delivery, and maintenance (维护).
There are, of course, many concerns about the project. One concern is that making an expensive, hi-tech neighborhood won’t help with a housing crisis in Toronto. It is important for Quayside to be accessible to the elderly, the disabled, and people of diverse races and income levels.
Another concern is about data collection and residents’ privacy. In response, Doctoroff says the data collection will only be used to improve the quality of life in Quayside, privacy to be built into every aspect of the neighborhood.
New and unique, the futuristic neighborhood will no doubt have many issues. In spite of these, it will be interesting to see its evolution.
12. What does Paragraph 2 talk about
A. The faith in building Quayside.
B. The concerns of building Quayside.
C. The difficulty in building Quayside.
D. The expense of building Quayside.
13. What’s the feature of the technologies in Quayside
A. Old-fashioned. B. Environmentally-friendly.
C. Energy-consuming. D. Cost-effective.
14. Why does the author mention all the concerns
A. To question the possibility of the project.
B. To try to find a solution to the problems.
C. To show people’s disapproval of the project.
D. To make people aware of the potential shortcomings.
15. What is the author’s attitude to Quayside
A. Skeptical. B. Neutral. C. Positive. D. Unfavorable.

The pond was always alive with activity, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles (乌龟) sunbathing on suing rocks Alex as curious about turtles. When it was too rainy to go canoeing, he often went to the library to check out books on turtles,
Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided to ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again. Suddenly Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be. He jumped off to have a look.
And then, the rock started to move! It was actually a large turtle slowly making its way across the road! Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching The turtle was still only halfway across the road Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up because snapping turtles have a powerful bite and they could even bite off someone’s finger! What could he do
Thinking fast, he started waving both hands wildly. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to a stop.
“Are you alight, Alex ” It was his neighbor, Mrs. Ramos.
“I’m fine, Mrs. Ram’s.” said Alex. “I’m just trying to save a turtle. It’s probably going to lay egg.”
“Oh, yeah. It’s spring.” said Mrs. Ram’s. “So, I guess a lot of turtles need to lay their eggs in the grass across the road.” Then she waved goodbye and drove off.
Alex thought about what Mrs. Ram’s had said. “There would probably be more turtles trying to cross the road at this spot!” he realized. But he couldn’t stand there all day trying to stop cars. He looked around and a road sign caught his eye. And then his face brightened.
He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad.

I am writing to offer my sincere congratulations to you on your wining the first prize in the speech contest entitled “Be a Lifelong Learner”. As your friend, I just want you to know how glad I am at your success.
I’m deeply impressed by your speech. Lifelong learning is the best education. For one thing, it helps us adapt to changes. We are supposed to embrace new technology and learn new knowledge. For another, learning is a good way to remain curious and stay young.
Your success has greatly encouraged me to be a lifelong learner. Hope we can both continue to study to improve ourselves.
Congratulations again!
Yours,
LiHua
