If you want to get away from the summer crowds in European countries, choose the following places as your destinations.
Costa de la Luz, Spain
The 75 miles of Atlantic-facing southern coastline between Tarifa and the Guadiana River, near the border with Portugal, has temperatures that are a little cooler and hasn’t been fully developed. Highlights include the beautiful fishing village of El Rompido, the great food scene in the town of Cadiz and the wild beaches around Huelva (between Mazagón and Matalasca as).
St. Moritz, Switzerland
Less than two hours by car from Italy’s wildly popular Lake Como, the Swiss mountain town of St. Moritz makes for a quieter summertime lakeside escape. Most of the famous people are in St. Moritz during the winter time, but in summer, you can replace skiing along the surrounding Swiss Alps with boating, swimming and windsurfing on the town’s lake. Other enjoyable activities in the area include white water rafting, hiking and mountain biking.
The Camargue, France
The Camargue is a wild region of vast and empty beaches where white horses wander. You are alone on the beach if you wish, even in the peak summer months. During the summer, a sustainable beach club, L’Oyat Plage, even shows up on the sand, drawing the kitesurfing set. Accommodation ranges from a rural stay on a traditional cow or horse farm to the five-star hotel version of the farm stay at Le Mas de Peint.
Alentejo, Portugal
People are calling Alentejo “Europe’ s best-kept secret”. Alentejo’ s uninterrupted beach extends for nearly 28 miles and the remote settlements of Comporta and Melides are the perfect places to stay and rest from everyday life. In addition to its wonderful beach, the region is known for being Portugal’s largest wine producer as well as for having the most marked hiking paths in the country.
1. Where should visitors go to experience fishermen’s life in Costa de la Luz
A. Cadiz. B. Huelva. C. El Rompido. D. Mazagón.
2. What are visitors recommended to do in St. Moritz in summer
A. Ride a horse on the beach. B. Hike with sports celebrities.
C. Ski freely along mountains. D. Enjoy various sports on a lake.
3. What do the last two places have in common
A. They have wonderful beaches. B. They host international kite events.
C. They are Portugal’s wine producers. D. They feature dangerous hiking paths.

A few years ago, Rachel Harder, a fourth-grade teacher, attended a trauma (精神创伤) conference. She learned that some police stations partnered with schools so they could let teachers know when one of their students had a police encounter, something that could cause the student to need extra care or attention.
“I loved this idea and figured there had to be a way to make this work within my own classroom community,” Rachel said.
A year after the conference, Rachel had a student with autism (自闭症) who frequently had tough days. To support her, Rachel told the student’s mother to simply text her “handle with care” to let her know when it was going to be one of those days.
“I knew that when she texted me, it meant that her daughter needed some extra time and a quiet location, not the gym for morning announcements, so that the rest of her day went smoothly,” Rachel said.
The simple method was such a success that Rachel decided to send all of her students home with a note for their parents. It explained what the “Handle with Care” system was and how they could take advantage of it. In no time, parents began to show their appreciation for Rachel’s incredible act of kindness.
But Rachel’s kindness didn’t end with her class. News about the amazing system spread, and teachers across the country began giving it a shot in their own classrooms. Printouts can be found on the Smart School House website, and the feedback (反馈) has been extremely positive!
“The parents just let me know it was a hard morning for their children,” Rachel said. “I don’t need to know details but parents like that know I’m keeping an extra eye on them.”
Rachel added, “Even though teachers can sometimes tell when a student is having a tough day by the way they’ re acting, these simple texts allow educators to make minor adjustments in advance that in turn make the whole day better for everyone.”
4. Why does the author write paragraph 1
A. To show many students are mentally unhealthy.
B. To introduce the inspiration for Rachel’s system.
C. To analyze the causes of students’ health problems.
D. To emphasize parents should understand their kids.
5. How might Rachel treat the girl student with tough days
A. By communicating with her for a long time. B. By taking her to the gym for announcements.
C. By driving her back home as soon as possible. D. By giving her some time alone in a quiet place.
6. What can we learn about Rachel’s “Handle with Care” system
A. It is well received. B. It ends with her class.
C. It still confuses parents. D. It needs further testing.
7. What do Rachel’s words in the last paragraph suggest
A. Students are responsible for their own health.
B. It’s easy to tell if a student is having a tough day.
C Educators needn’t always comfort their students.
D. The reminder of students’ emotional problems matters.
C
The industrial solvent (溶剂) trichloroethylene (TCE) was once an ingredient in the process of removing caffeine from coffee. However, it was banned by the food industry in the 1970s.
Despite that, it is still a necessary element in some household products, such as cleaning wipes, tool cleaners, paint removers, carpet cleaners and spot removers. In the United Kingdom, dry cleaners stopped using it in the mid-1950s, but according to Public Health England, it still plays a necessary part in metal cleaning.
A global study in 2021 found TCE increased the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves. It is said that the harmful chemical was fueling rising numbers of cases of Parkinson’s disease across the world.
About one million people in the US currently suffer from the condition. Doctors diagnose (诊断) 60,000 Americans each year. Brian Grant, who played for 12 years in the NBA, was diagnosed at the age of 36. The study authors say he was exposed to TCE when he was just three years old. He lived with his father, a US Marine at Camp Lejeune where TCE has been found polluting the military base. Amy Lindberg was similarly exposed there while serving as a US Navy captain. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 40 years later. The study also details others whose condition was the result of living close to a polluted site or working with the chemical directly.
The US alone is home to thousands of polluted sites. Researchers say the country needs to speed up cleaning and controlling efforts. They argue that TCE should be further limited in use and be replaced by other chemicals as soon as possible. Besides, TCE levels in groundwater, drinking water, soil, and outdoor and indoor air require closer monitoring, and the information needs to be shared with those who live and work near polluted sites.
8. What makes TCE a necessary element in household products
A. Its environment-friendly property. B. Its easy availability in daily life.
C. Its outstanding cleaning ability. D. Its power of ensuring product safety.
9. What did the global study in 2021 show
A. The young tended to develop Parkinson’s disease. B. TCE and Parkinson’s disease were closely related.
C. Parkinson’s disease was caused by complex factors. D. Parkinson’s disease proved more deadly than before.
10. What can be known about Brian Grant and Amy Lindberg mentioned in paragraph 4
A. They fell sick shortly after joining the US Navy. B. They worked with the chemical of TCE directly.
C. They suffered because of their exposure to TCE. D. They were diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease early.
11. Which of the following shows the researchers’ opinion
A. TCE levels in the air are impossible to monitor. B. Measures of handling TCE should be stricter.
C. The use of chemicals requires more freedom. D. Efforts to replace TCE have proven very simple.
D
“We’ve lost the idea of nurses as authority figures,” author Sarah DiGregorio writes in her new book Taking Care: The Story of Nursing and Its Power to Change the World.
As nurses today fight for better pay and more respect for their work, DiGregorio points out in the book that centuries ago, they were regarded as an essential part of the health care system in many civilizations - they received respect for their knowledge and skills in treating the sick, dating back to ancient times in India and the Islamic world.
Both doctors and nurses had to have knowledge about medications, but it was the nurses who cared for patients directly, according to Charaka-Samhita, a key Indian medical text from 2,000 years ago. They had to have hands-on skills with patients as well as good character, kindness and interpersonal skills. In the 600s. public health care became very important in the early Islamic world. The hospitals had professional nurses, both men and women.
The opening of new medical schools in Europe during the Middle Ages led in an age that slowly pushed women nurses out of medicine and health care. The new medical schools, which only allowed men, started turning out a new professional class of physicians who were all men with social status, DiGregorio observes. Only those with a license from one of these medical schools could practice medicine. She cites scenes from court cases where popular women nurses were tried and punished.
Florence Nightingale is often credited as a force in recovering the importance of nurses, but her vision of the profession had negative impacts that have remained to this day, argues DiGregorio. “Nightingale viewed nursing as an all-female profession that was subordinate to physicians, which set up this idea that nurses were assistants to physicians,” writes DiGregorio.
“Nightingale took her orders from the physicians and never challenged their authority. If a physician had not ordered water for a dying man, she would not give the man water,” writes DiGregorio, who draws her findings from nursing historians who have studied Nightingale.
12. What did nurses do according to an old Indian medical text
A. They provided direct patient care. B. They strictly followed doctors' orders.
C. They refused to learn about medications. D. They guided doctors to practice medicine.
13. What phenomenon is mainly described in paragraph 4
A. Men nurses were slowly disappearing. B. The nursing profession was competitive.
C. Women nurses were losing their power. D. Nursing schools in Europe decreased.
14. What do the underlined words “subordinate to” in paragraph 5 most probably mean
A. Taking interest in. B. Less important than.
C. Paying no attention to. D. Closely connected with.
15. From which is the text most probably taken
A. An introduction to a new book. B. A report on an author's experience.
C. An essay on the importance of nursing. D. A history book of a famous nurse's stories.

It was New Year’s Eve and I was camping in Narooma, New South Wales (NSW), with my Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club teammates. The next morning, we’d begin the first leg of the George Bass Surfboat Marathon — the longest and toughest surfboat race in the world.
Over seven days, we’d row 190km down the NSW coast, starting at Corrigan’s Beach in Batemans Bay and ending in Cocora Beach, Eden. It was a competition my 10 teammates and I had been training two years for. During the training, we became closer and often helped each other. If one of us felt like giving up, the others would always offer support.
Over the next three days, we won three races and lost one. With three wins in the bag, on the fourth day, we were hopeful. We only needed one more win to secure the marathon.
After the third race ended, we made our way back to the shoreline, when suddenly the water became quite rough and unpredictable, and then the boat started to shake and suddenly, Scott fell into the water. Without him steering (掌舵), we lost control. The boat turned side-on and one by one the rest of the team jumped off the boat. Seconds later, at the shoreline, I jumped out, too, and landed in the water, face-down on the sand. Then, the 300 kg surfboat had slammed (猛烈撞击) on top of me. My body immediately went numb (麻木的) and I started to panic.
My team raced over to me. “I think she’s got a spinal (脊髓) injury,” someone said. Then they quickly called an ambulance. Due to the severity of my injuries, I should be airlifted to Royal North Shore in Sydney and taken straight in for surgery. When I woke up, I saw my teammates and the surgeon said, “We’ve put metal plates to put your back together,” he said. “We’ll remove them in about six months.” Hearing that, my spirits began to lift slightly. I’d been terrified that I’d be immobile forever.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My teammates were really helpful and considerate during my recovery.

The recovery went well, but there was still a long road to it.

【答案】One possible version:
My teammates were really helpful and considerate during my recovery. At the beginning of my recovery, they hardly left my side, encouraging me from time to time. When I wanted to give up due to the pain, they told me that they expected me to stand up again to row boats with them, which gave me hope. With their help, I pushed myself one step at a time, determined to get better. It was hard, but I knew it would be worth it.
The recovery went well, but there was still a long road to it. I knew it would take time but eventually I wanted to get back on the water again. The marathon and my teammates were waiting for me. Rowing boats was one of the things that I loved doing best. It was my dream. I knew it may be tougher, but I must stick to my dream whatever trouble I would meet. The ocean might not be predictable, but my life could be and I would never give it up.
