Reading opens a world of possibilities. Books about self-improvement, DIY home repair or novels that engage your imagination can be trans formative. But for people who are food insecure, going to a bookstore or a library is not a priority(优先事项). That’s why a charity in Britain is now serving books at local food banks.
The charity, Bookbanks, was founded by Emily Rhodes, a London-based writer who has been surrounded by books in her entire life. She was a keen reader, studied English in university, and worked in publishing and bookselling before becoming a journalist.
In 2022, Rhodes began volunteering at a community food center in Newington Green, in northeast London. There she realized that bringing books into the center could not only enrich people’s lives with reading but it could also help people make connections and socialize. “People think of a book as a solitary thing, but I think there’s another side to books that makes them amazing connectors and community builders,” Rhodes said.
Rhodes started small by setting up a table with a few hundred books at the food bank in Newington Green. At first, Rhodes gave books from her own collection but as her project grew, she started to get donations from bookstores, libraries and publishers.
Then she and her co-director Hattie Garlick officially launched Bookbanks as a charity and began to expand in the city. Since three percent of people use food banks, this is a great opportunity to get books into the hands of people that cannot afford to own books.
Yusuf, 53, a food bank user, said that he took books to read with his son. “It’s the best time; we are quiet together. We haven’t got money, but we have books. The books are full of knowledge and knowledge is good,” he said.
There are currently four Bookbanks locations, according to the organization, and to date, more than 3,000 books have been given away. There are plans to open four-to-six more locations in food banks in 2025. And the food banks have the potential to be a community space of socializing and learning and not just a place to be fed.

6. How did Emily Rhodes start her project in the first place
A. By donating her own books. B. By purchasing used books.
C. By opening bookstores. D. By working with publishers.
7. What is Yusuf’s attitude to Bookbanks

People usually wear rings to look nice — or perhaps to show that they’re married! But in the James Bond movies, the British secret agent(特工)has some very cool rings that do other things. For example, in the 2002 movie Die Another Day, James Bond wears a ring that can break glass: twist (扭动)the ring and glass breaks just by touching it!
Now, technology experts have designed rings that can make any of us feel like a secret agent. These rings don’t break glass or catch bad guys, but they let your fingers work like a computer mouse.
Put a special ring onto your first finger, and you’ll be able to control your computer — scrolling(滚动)and clicking — without using your laptop’s touch pad. One of the latest versions of these rings is made by a Swiss company called Padrone, which says its ring turns any surface into a touch pad. That means when you’re wearing the ring you can move your finger around on your desk — or on a lot of different flat surfaces — and control your computer.
So if you’re working on a laptop, you don’t have to move your hand to the small touch pad — you can scroll and tap from a more comfortable position. Padrone’s ring connects to your computer using Bluetooth, and it works with sensors and a very small camera inside the ring. The rings, which will come in different sizes, are not available just yet, but the company hopes people will be able to buy them in May, when they should cost about $280.
But there are also cheaper ways to try out this type of technology. In fact, there are already apps you can install(安装)on a smartwatch that let you control your computer with just your finger or by tapping the watch!
8. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To offer an example. B. To make comparisons.
C. To provide an argument. D. To lead in the topic.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How to fix a computer. B. How to run a company.
C. The role of the special ring. D. The way of using an app.
10. What is Padrone’s expectation
A. It will employ more loyal workers.
B. Its product will come into the market.
C. It will remake the James Bond movies.
D. Its computers will be checked at once.
11. What can be learnt from the last paragraph
A. Smartwatches are welcomed by the public.
B. It is convenient to buy things by computer.
C. There are cheaper options to try the technology.
D. Padrone’s rings have more advantages over apps.
A relative newcomer compared to YouTube and Instagram, TikTok was launched in 2016 and has since grown to an audience of over one billion monthly active users. Its format — short, shareable videos — and addictive algorithm(算法)have proved particularly popular among younger people. According to TikTok’s own data insights, the app has seen a 410% increase in travel content views since 2021.
TikTok content creator Emma Cooke thinks it’s the honesty of videos that makes them perform well. “If a picture is worth 1,000 words, a video is worth 10,000,” she says. “It’s very hard to edit them in the way you could imagine. TikTok travellers are looking for authenticity (真实性).”
More than 70% of TikTok’s European audience say they’ re likely to book a holiday based on recommendations they’ve seen on the platform (平台). Indeed, research by Adobe found that more than 60% of Gen Z Americans have used TikTok as a search engine. Entering a search term such as “top things to do in Paris” will bring up endless videos, ranked by popularity and the algorithm will adapt to these interests next time you search.
TikTok attracts many content creators, whose insights can be invaluable for travellers. But they also have the potential to cause harm, at times directing thousands of visitors to places that don’t have the infrastructure (基础设施)to support.
Many destinations have fallen victim to their own success. A study published in a journal found that, “While the tourists helped improve the economic situation, they also brought traffic and crowding, putting pressure on infrastructure.”
There’s also the issue of the promotion of unethical(不道德的)tourism. Responsible travel is of keen interest to TikTok users. But when Dr Natara Loose, an American veterinarian, visited Mauritius this year, she says she was “shocked by the number of boats selling tours to swim with dolphins, a practice illegal in Mauritius but spread all over TikTok.”
For better or worse, it’s clear the platform’s influence on travel is enormous, particularly among younger generations and it isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
12. What makes TikTok popular according to Emma Cooke
A. Its longer videos. B. Its older audience.
C. Its focus on edited content. D. Its video content’s authenticity.
13. What do most Gen Z Americans use TikTok as according to the text
A. A booking platform for travel accommodations.
B. A platform for sharing travel photos and videos.
C. A search engine for travel recommendations.
D. A tool for connecting with local tour operators.
14. What is a potential negative consequence of TikTok tourist promotions
A. They may over-commercialize tourism.
B. They may overcrowd local infrastructure.
C. They may prevent sustainable travel modes.
D. They may increase the risk of cultural similarity.
15. What would be the best title for this text
A. How TikTok boosts the economy
B. Why TikTok makes responsible travellers
C. How TikTok is changing the face of travel
D. What TikTok learns from other platforms

Cities and infrastructure(基础建设)
Roads and bridges are damaged by flooding and other severe weather conditions, making it more difficult for you to get around your city and reach important places. 19 This can make it hard to use air conditioning or get help when you need.
Cost of living
As the effects of climate change increase, prices increase, too. 20 Because climate change affects agricultural production and the transportation of goods, food, clothes, and household products are also more expensive. Building materials and family appliances(电器)that relieve the harmful effects of climate change also tend to be pricier, making it more expensive for you to buy or rent a house.

19.根据上文“Roads and bridges are damaged by flooding and other severe weather conditions, making it more difficult for you to get around your city and reach important places.(道路和桥梁被洪水和其他恶劣天气条件破坏,使你在城市周围走动和到达重要地点变得更加困难)”以及后文“This can make it hard to use air conditioning or get help when you need.(这可能会让你在需要的时候很难使用空调或获得帮助)”可知,本句是在说明极端天气对其他基础设施的影响。故F选项“极端的温度和天气也会损害电力和电话系统”符合语境,故选F。
20.根据上文“As the effects of climate change increase, prices increase, too.(随着气候变化的影响加剧,价格也在上涨)”以及后文“Because climate change affects agricultural production and the transportation of goods, food, clothes, and household products are also more expensive. Building materials and family appliances (电器)that relieve the harmful effects of climate change also tend to be pricier, making it more expensive for you to buy or rent a house.(由于气候变化影响农业生产和货物运输,食品、衣服和家庭用品也更加昂贵。缓解气候变化有害影响的建筑材料和家用电器也往往更贵,这使得你购买或租赁房子的成本更高)”可知,上文提到气候变化影响价格,本句承接上文,说明原因,故A选项“温度升高会导致你使用更多的能量”符合语境,故选A。
