Recently, the topic “Chinese people can eat such a sweet melon but can’t do without this grandma” has topped the hot search list. The grandma is 94-year-old Wu Mingzhu, called the “queen of melons”, a melon-growing expert. Among Wu Mingzhu’s classmates was Yuan Longping, who later became the “father of hybrid rice”.
Wu Mingzhu was born in 1930 into a scholarly family in Wuhan City. After her graduation in 1953, she worked in Beijing. But Wu had already set her eyes on her long-awaited goal. “What I studied was the science of fruit and vegetables. I wanted to work in the fields not in an office,” said Wu.
In 1955, Wu offered to work in Shanghai County, Turpan Basin, where working conditions were quite hard. She found that the Hami melon was in danger if not properly cultivated(种植). Wu spent years visiting over 300 production teams, picking out 44 melon varieties. She overcame a variety of difficulties to produce particularly delicious melons in a scientific way. Then the promotion area covered most of Xinjiang’s main commodity areas.
From more than 60 years, Wu Mingzhu and her team has cultivated more than 30 varieties, brought the sweetness of melons to people and promoted a complete breeding innovation system to the world.
When first hearing her nickname of “a pearl in the Turpan Basin”, Wu said, “In Xinjiang, there are thousands of science and technology workers like me. They have worked hard for decades on the frontline of agriculture. I’m just one of the ordinary ones.”
24. Why did Wu dislike the job in Beijing
A. She preferred to research in the fields.
B. She was attracted by Xinjiang’s fruit.
C. She wanted to go back to her hometown.
D. She thought Beijing was unsuitable for agriculture.
25. What can we know about Wu from the first two paragraphs
A. She is skilled in hybrid rice.
B. She was born in a scholarly family.
C. She majored in science of medicine.
D. She finished her education at the age of 33.
26. How does the author describe the process of Wu’s saving Hami melons
A. By making a comparison. B. By telling a story.
C. By citing local people’s words. D. By listing numbers.
27. Which of the following best describes Wu
A. Kind. B. Humorous. C. Devoted. D. Patient.
C
When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/ Chinese, etc.” But this kind of response misses the point.
More often than not, what we mean when we say someone “has an accent” is that their accent is different from the local one. But this definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in terms of the language study, every person speaks with an accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do!
Every person speaks a dialect, too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance, “You got eat or not ”(meaning “Have you eaten ”) is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different
We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects— for the benefit of everyone. Language differences like these provide insights into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.
28. What does the author think of his/ her friends’ response in Paragraph 1
A. It reflects their self confidence.
B. It reflects their language levels.
C. It misses the real meaning of accents.
D. It misses the point of communication.
29. Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English
A. To justify the use of dialects. B. To show the diversity of dialects.
C. To correct a grammatical mistake. D. To highlight a traditional approach.
30. What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph
A. Learn to speak with our local dialect.
B. Seek for an official definition of accents.
C. Appreciate the value of accents and dialects.
D. Distinguish our local languages from others’.
31. What can be a suitable title for this passage
A. Standard English Is at Risk
B. Everyone Has an Accent
C. Dialects Lead to Misunderstanding
D. Accents Enhance Our Identities
D
A Chinese medical research team has developed a model using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to blood analysis, allowing labs to provide faster and more correct feedback to doctors.
Hospital labs generally test millions of blood cells for disease diagnosis every day, which is a repeated task usually performed by hand by trained physicians who check blood samples through microscopes, one after another.
The new AI model has been considered as a breakthrough development, as it has the potential to change how labs analyze blood samples, simplifying the evaluation process and finding potential abnormal conditions with great efficiency.
A blood smear(血涂片) is a traditional examination used to look for abnormalities in blood cells. It is an important way to discover blood system disorders. However, the current analysis of blood smear under a microscope is time-consuming and mainly relies on the skills and experience of physicians. Many Chinese clinics at the grassroots level are lacking well-trained professionals, resulting in a low rate of diagnosis.
“The AI has learned to recognize which cells are normal or abnormal with an accuracy rate of over 90 percent in a shorter time than human eyes,” said Peng Xiangui, leader of the research team.
Peng went on to explain that to train and test the AI model, his team fed it with data involving 300,000 red blood cells collected over the past five years. The results showed that it can accurately identify 49 types of abnormal blood cells, covering most of the common diseases seen in the clinic.
In addition to reducing human labor, Peng believes that such a medical AI model will assist inexperienced physicians in reaching the level of an expert and increase their work efficiency. Besides, the AI database can store unlimited information, making diagnosis more scientific and accurate.
32. Which of the following is the advantage of the new AI model
A. Cheaper price. B. Better handling.
C. Higher efficiency. D. Clearer images.
33. What does the underlined word “relies on” mean here
A. Depends on. B. Insists on. C. Sums up. D. Tries out.
34. Why does the blood smear lead to a low rate of diagnosis at the grassroots level
A. It’s hard to find abnormal cells.
B. Many clinics lack skilled physicians.
C. It’s a traditional and backward method.
D. Many clinics don’t have professional devices.
35. What can we infer from Peng’s words
A. He thinks highly of the new AI model.
B. The new AI model has been widely used.
C. It’s necessary to keep the AI database safe.
D. Inexperienced physicians are no match for the AI model.

When John pulled into his mother’s driveway with his young daughter, Lily, the sight of the familiar lychee(荔枝) tree welcomed them. “Look Lily,” John said , pointing to the towering tree in the front yard. “It’s the family tree. Grandma took it from China.”
Lily smiled as John treated the tree as if it were a real family member. As they were admiring the tree, the screen door opened and out stepped Grandma Mei, bathed in the warm Florida sunlight. Grandma Mei, who came from the province of Guangdong in China, was known for her gardening, particularly when it came to lychees.
Seeing her granddaughter, Grandma Mei adjusted her baseball cap and asked if Lily was ready for some lychees. But Lily hesitated, for the fruit’s appearance was unlike any other fruit she had tried before.
“It’s OK, Lily. Let’s get busy!” John said with enthusiasm, rubbing his hands together. “Family tree’s waiting.” John, eager to start the day’s work, began climbing the tree, determined to harvest the best lychees for the family. Lily watched in amazement, wondering how Grandma could grow these big lychees, and why her father could be so skillful. Lily noticed the clusters(簇) of lychees, their skin rough yet inviting.
As John cut through the branches with a cutter, Lily expressed her concern for the well-being of the tree. John explained to her that cutting the ends of branches won’t hurt family tree. Instead such behaviour made it healthier and stronger.
