UNESCO’s World Heritage List has been updated for 2024, and Europe’s newest listings, some of Europe’s lesser-known yet culturally significant sites, are well worth exploring.
Via Appia, Italy
Also known as “the Queen of roads”, this 500-mile stretch is the oldest Roman road. It connects the Italian capital to Southern Italy’s seaports and speeds the growth and development of new settlements while driving agricultural production and trade. Journeying up this road is a transportation through time, with the original paving stones reminding us of Italy’s old times.
Schwerin Residence Ensemble (建筑群), Germany
A picture-perfect image of traditional German architecture surrounded by Lake Schwerin, this cultural ensemble comprises 38 of Schwerin’s most striking landscapes and architecture. The architecture of Schwerin captures the essence of 19th-century Germany with its public gardens and cultural buildings tied together by the grand Schwerin Castle.
The Flow Country, Scotland
In Scotland lies one of the world’s most untouched blanket bog (沼泽) landscapes. With around 500,000 acres of bog pools and ancient plants, The Flow Country is one of the world’s biggest carbon stores, crucial in the fight against climate change. On foot is how you can experience the dramatic views of this lesser-known landscape and diverse wildlife species closely.
Moravian Church Settlements, Germany and UK
Gracehill was a village in Northern Ireland founded by the Moravians in 1759. Guided tours of Gracehill Old School and the Moravian Church offer visual insights into traditional, Moravian architecture. In Germany, the living Moravian heritage can be felt in the museums and church halls of Herrnhut, the birthplace of the Moravian Church.

B
I was thirteen years old. My family had moved to Southern California from North Florida a year before. Angry and stubborn, I could not adapt to this sudden change. Like so many teenagers, I struggled to escape from anything that did not agree with my picture of the world. A “good without need of guidance” kid, I rejected any kind of offering of love.
One night, after a particularly difficult day, I stormed into my room, shut the door and got into bed. As I lay down in the privacy of my bed, my hands slipped under my pillow. There was an envelope. I pulled it out and on the envelope, it read, “To read when you’re alone.” Since I was alone, no one would know whether I read it or not, so I opened it. It said “Mike, I know life is hard right now, I know you are upset and I know we don’t do everything right. I also know that I love you completely and nothing you do or say will ever change that. I am here for you and I love you — that will never change. Love, Mom.” That was the first of several “To read when you’re alone” letters.
Nowadays, I travel the world helping people. I was in Sarasota, Florida, teaching a seminar (研讨课) when, at the end of the day, a woman came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having with her son. We walked out to the beach, and I told her of my mom’s undying love and about the “To read when you’re alone” letters. Several weeks later, I got a card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son. That night as I went to bed, I put my hands under my pillow and remembered the relief I felt every time I got a letter. In the midst of my teen years, the letters were reminders of calm that I was loved in spite of my shortcomings. Today, when the seas of life get stormy, I know that what under my pillow is assurance of love — consistent (始终如一的) and unconditional love changes my life.
4. The author was angry and stubborn mainly because ________.
A. he didn’t like his new school
B. he didn’t get along well with his parents
C. he wanted to escape from his parents’ control
D. he struggled to fit in with his new environment
5. What do we know about the letter found under the pillow
A. It was written by the author’s friend.
B. It showed mom’s love and understanding.
C. It focused on the author’s school life.
D. It advised the author to move back to Florida.
6. What inspired the lady in Sarasota to write a letter to her son
A. Her own difficult experience.
B. Her son’s poor performance at school.
C. The author’s rich teaching experience.
D. The author’s sharing of his mother’s action.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Teenage Trouble: Growing Pains
B. Mom’s Love Letters: My Secret Comfort
C. Helping Others: A Journey of Kindness
D. Parental Guidance: My Inner Strength Source
C
When people talk about suddenly remembering old memories , the memories they’ re referring to are usually episodic (情景的) memories. As the name suggests, this type of memory stores the scenes of our life.
Another type of memory that can also be suddenly remembered is semantic memory. Our semantic memory is the storehouse of our knowledge, containing all the facts we know.
Usually, the recall of episodic and semantic memories has easily identifiable triggers (诱因) in our context. Context includes our physical surroundings as well as the aspects of our mental state, such as thoughts and feelings. For example, you’re eating a dish at a restaurant, and its smell reminds you of a similar dish your mom used to make. This is episodic memory. When someone says the word “Oscar”, the name of the movie that won the Oscar recently flashes in your mind. That belongs to semantic memory.
These memories had obvious triggers in our context, but sometimes, the memories that flash in our minds have no identifiable triggers. They seem to flash across our minds out of nowhere; therefore, they’ve been called mind-pops (闪念).
Mind-pops shouldn’t be confused with insight, which is the sudden pop ping up of a potential solution to a complex problem in the mind. Thus, mind- pops are semantic or autobiographical memories that suddenly flash in our minds without an easily identifiable trigger.
Mind-pops may comprise any piece of information, be it an image, a sound, or a word. They’re often experienced by people when they’re engaged in mundane tasks like mopping the floor or brushing teeth. Such ordinary and unexciting routines tend to inspire something in our mind. For example, you’re reading a book, and suddenly, the image of your school corridor pops into your mind for no reason. What you were reading or thinking at the time had no connection to your school.
I do experience mind-pops from time to time. But when I tried to look for cues in my con text that may have triggered my mind-pops, I would fail. Maybe such mind-pops are completely random.
8. Which of the following might be episodic memory
A You predict a heavy rain is on the way.
B. A good idea flashes into your mind suddenly.
C. A song reminds you of your middle school graduation.
D. You think of a round shape when hearing the word “circle”.
9. What is a feature of mind-pops
A. They have obvious triggers. B. They come out without warning.
C. They appear in the form of images. D. They often bring long- lasting memories.
10 What does the underlined word “mundane” in paragraph 6 probably mean
A. Careful. B. Dull. C. Necessary. D. Challenging.
11. What is the aim of this passage
A. To explore human inner thoughts. B. To point out the memory formation.
C. To distinguish different memory scenes. D. To explain some similar memory phenomena.
D
New York (CNN) -OpenAI is worried that people might start to rely on ChatGPT too much for companionship, potentially leading to “dependence”, because of its new human-sounding voice mode.
ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode sounds remarkably lifelike. It responds in real time, can adjust to being interrupted, and makes the kinds of noises that humans make during conversations like laughing or “hmms”. It can also judge a speaker’s emotional state based on their tone of voice.
Within minutes of OpenAI announcing the feature at an event earlier this year, it was being compared to the AI digital assistant in the 2013 film Her, with whom the main character falls in love, only to be left heartbroken when the AI admits “she” also has relationships with hundreds of other users.
Now, OpenAI is apparently concerned that fictional story is a little too close to becoming reality, after it says it observed users talking to ChatGPT’s voice mode in language “expressing shared bonds” with the tool.
“Eventually, users might form social relationships with the AI, reducing their need for human interaction-potentially benefiting lonely individuals but possibly affecting healthy relationships,” the report states. It adds that hearing information from a bot (机器人程序) that sounds like a human could lead users to trust the tool more than they should, given AI’s tendency to get things wrong.
Some people are already forming what they describe as dependent relationships with AI chatbots, causing concern from relationship experts.
OpenAI said that human users’ interactions with ChatGPT’s voice mode could also, over time, influence what’s considered normal in social interactions.
For now, OpenAI says it’s committed to building Al “safely”, and plans to continue studying the potential for “emotional reliance” by users on its tools.
12. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about ChatGPT’s voice mode
A. Its features. B. Its appearance. C. Its different voice tones. D. Its emotional states.
13. Why is the 2013 film Her mentioned
A. To test ChatGPT’s voice mode. B. To show the concern of OpenAI.
C. To share the content of the film. D. To indicate AI can hurt people.
14. According to the report, what aspect might AI have impact on
A. Social practice. B. Interpersonal interaction. C. Outdoor activities. D. Electronic products.
15. What do relationship experts express concern over
A. AI’s tendency for giving wrong information.
B. The positive influence that AI chatbots have on users.
C. Dependent relationships between people and AI chatbots.
D. The safety of the communication between AI chatbots and people.

Our young family had just moved from the tropical heat of Asia to what we believed would be a winter wonderland. It was our first winter in Chicago but soon the sense of adventure we had for our new life gave way to self-doubt and homesickness. And just as the animals were hibernating (冬眠), it seemed that so were our new neighbors. As newcomers, we felt alone.
Then something happened at the beginning of December. It all began with a simple request from our eight-year-old daughter, “Mommy, let’s put up a Christmas tree at home.” From her we learned that one of our neighbors, a graceful woman across the block had put up a brcathtaking, luminous (夜光的) and lush tree, carefully placed in a window for all to see.
At first, we didn’t pay too much attention to this request, for we had never put up a Christmas tree. But my daughter’s repeated request made us go ahead with this first step: loaded with layers of clothing to fight the unfamiliar cold, we tasked ourselves with finding a tree and the tree’s dangling adornments (悬垂装饰物) for our daughter.
We didn’t realize it then, but that was the first time that we took time to wander around our block and familiarize ourselves with our new town. We began to pay attention to the fresh air and the approaching Christmas season.
When we finally selected our tree, we realized we didn’t have a car big enough to get it home. Of course, we had not considered that. It was our first time. We had no choice but to carry it home. Out of breath, we each held on to an heavy end of the tree.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

We had walked only a few steps when a gentleman in the neighborhood stopped us in his truck.

Hold Our Dreams in Our Hands
It goes without saying that we all have our dreams, big or small. What counts most is that we should hold on to our dreams when we’re engaged in our routine studies. Holding that dream rooted at the bottom of our hearts, we’ll feel motivated whenever we encounter any difficulty. As a responsible student and citizen, my dream is to work hard and make contributions to our country in the future apart from making a difference in my personal life. It is by holding my dream in my hands that I can keep myself motivated and make steady progress.
That’s all. Thank you.

【答案】We had walked only a few steps when a gentleman in the neighborhood stopped us in his truck. “Need a ride ” he asked with a warm smile. Surprised as we were, an overwhelming sense of gratitude welled up within our hearts. With his kind assistance, we managed to load the tree onto the rear of his truck and then hopped in. Upon arriving home, not only did he help us unload the tree but he also wished us a merry Christmas before driving away. Excited and overjoyed, we couldn’t wait to set up the tree at home. Still, the tree looked like it was missing something: the dangling adornments.
Not knowing how to decorate the tree, I went to take a secret look at my neighbor’s. The beautiful lights and shiny ornaments were truly a sight to behold. As I was looking, the graceful woman came out. Rather than being angry at my obvious staring, she invited me in for a cup of hot chocolate. She showed me her ornaments and gave me some advice. That day, I went home with a heart brimming with the Christmas spirit and our tree was later decorated with love and new-found friendship. It was not until then that we no longer felt lonely or homesick but started to feel like home again.
