I was sitting in my high school classroom, nervously tapping my pencil against the desk as I awaited the start of the English exam.
As the clock struck, signaling the beginning of the exam, my heart began to race. I opened the exam booklet and scanned the questions, and I felt a wave of panic over me. The questions seemed foreign, and the topics unfamiliar. In a state of panic, I hurriedly wrote down my answers, hoping that somehow, by some stroke of luck, they would be correct. But as the minutes went by, I realized I couldn’t seem to make sense of the questions before me. As the final bell rang, I handed in my paper with a heavy heart.
In the days that followed, I couldn’t shake the feeling of failure that hung over me like a dark cloud. I replayed the exam over and over in my mind, analyzing every question, every answer, searching for clues as to where I had gone wrong.
But in the depression, a realization began to dawn on me I had failed, yes, but I had also learned valuable lessons along the way. Armed with this newfound wisdom, I ensured that I would do better next time. I threw myself into my studies with renewed determination, devouring books and practicing past exams with an eagerness I had never known before.
When the time came to retake the exam, I was ready. I approached each question with confidence an clarity, drawing upon the lessons I had learned from my previous missteps.
When the results were announced, I held my breath as I scanned the list of names. And there it was-my name, shining brightly among the list of successful candidates. At that moment, all the hard work, all the late nights and early mornings, were worth it.
And as I look back on that sunny afternoon in the high school classroom, I am grateful for the lessons it taught me, and the person it helped me become.

A new study found that adults who played sports as a kid scored higher on a measurement of willpower (意志力) than adults who didn’t play at all.
The study was completed by 3,993 adults who volunteered to join. Willpower was measured by asking volunteers to rate themselves on a scale of 1 — 5 on eight statements, including “I never give up.” None of the statements were directly related to sports. Original results showed that 34% of those who played sports as a youth scored high on the willpower scale, compared to only 23% of those who didn’t play sports. And 25% of those who never played sports scored low on the willpower scale, compared to just 17% of those who did play sports.
“Sport attending seems to have improved people’s development of willpower even more than they realized,” said Emily Nothnagle, lead author of the study. Adults who said they joined in sports regularly within the last year showed higher levels of willpower. “This additional finding about sports attending in adulthood suggests that you can build and perhaps lose willpower during different points in your life,” she said. “It is not a static quality.”
There can also be issues if you use willpower without some limits. An overstress on applying willpower in sports activities can lead some people to overtrain and injure themselves. So you need to pay attention to doing sports properly and choose the right kind of exercise for you.
“Kids who join in sports learn what it is like to struggle as they learn new skills, overcome challenges and bounce back from failure to try again,” Nothnagle said. “The willpower they develop playing sports can assist them the rest of their lives.”
28. How does the author introduce the study in paragraph 2
A. By stating opinions. B. By offering definitions.
C. By showing examples. D. By illustrating data.
29. What does the underlined word “static” mean in paragraph 3
A. Necessary. B. Fixed. C. Significant. D. Remarkable.
30. What does the author suggest readers do
A. Do gentle exercise to avoid injury. B. Choose right sports and do them properly.
C. Do more kinds of exercise if possible. D. Apply willpower in sports.
31. What's Nothnagle’s attitude towards “exercise improves willpower”
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Carefree. D. Objective.
D
Art and science may seem like opposite things. One means the creative flow of ideas, and the other means cold, hard data — some people believe. In fact, the two have much in common. Now, a study finds art can help students remember better what they learned in science class.
Mariale Hardiman, an education specialist, noticed that students who used art in the class listened more carefully. They might ask more questions. They might volunteer more ideas. What’s more, students seemed to remember more of what they had been taught when their science lessons had involved art. To prove that, Hardiman teamed up with some researchers and six local schools.
In the experiment, the researchers worked with teachers in 16 fifth-grade classrooms. They provided traditional science lessons and art-focused ones. In a traditional science class, for example, students might read the information from a book aloud. In the art-focused one, they might sing the information instead.
The team randomly assigned(分配) each of the 350 students to either a traditional science class or an art-focused one. Students then learned science using that way for the whole unit — about three weeks. When they changed to a new topic, they also changed to the other type of class. This way, each student had both an art-focused class and a traditional one. Every unit was taught in both ways, to different groups of students. This enabled the researchers to see how students did in both types of classes.
The team found that students who started off in traditional classes performed better after they moved into an art-focused class. But those who started in an art-focused class did well even when they went back to a traditional science class. These students appeared to use some of the art techniques after going back to a traditional class. Classroom teachers reported that many students continued to sketch(画速写) or sing to help remember the information. “It suggests that the arts may help students apply creative ways of learning on their own,” Hardiman said.
32. How does the first paragraph develop
A. By making comparisons. B. By analyzing cause and effect.
C. By following space order. D. By giving examples.
33. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. Students’ learning ability depends greatly on class involvement.
B. Students are more creative in art class than in science class.
C. Students take an active part when their class involves art.
D. Students remember things for a longer time if using art in class.
34. What were the students required to do in the experiment
A. Learn three units in total.
B. Learn two topics for three weeks.
C. Take two types of classes.
D. Choose between a traditional class and an art-focused one.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. It is not easy to use art in science class.

I was nominated (提名) for our school’s debate team. I jumped at the chance. When I got home that day, I began to fill out the application form, trying hard to prove how I met all the team’s criteria: strong communication skills, teamwork, and a good understanding of current events.
The next day, I handed in my application and waited with eagerness. I was on tenterhooks (如坐针毡) , anticipation building up with each tick of the clock.
Two weeks went by, and I received a letter from the school about the debate team, which began with “I’m sorry to…”. As soon as the school bus let me off that afternoon, I raced into the house. My mother was typing at the computer.
“Mom,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, “I didn’t make the debate team.”
She looked up, a smile playing on her lips, thinking I was joking, and playfully reached out to high-five me. But the tears in my eyes told a different story.
“No, really, I wasn’t picked,” I told her, handing her the letter.
Her smile faded, replaced by a look of genuine concern. “Oh, sweetheart, I’m sorry,” she said, surprised. “There must be some mistake.” She called the debate team advisor, but he confirmed there were no mistakes and the decision was final. Hearing that, I broke down and burst out crying.
The rejection stung (刺痛) me, especially when I saw friends celebrating their acceptance. I felt cheated, questioning the fairness of the process. In my view, some selected didn’t deserve it as much as I did. Bitterness crept (潜入) into my words as I complained.
“I’m the best fit for the team,” I protested.
“See, Jenny, complaining won’t get you on the team.” Mom gave me a serious look.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I stared at Mom and listened eagerly.

根据第四段中“Armed with this newfound wisdom, I ensured that I would do better next time. I threw myself into my studies with renewed determination, devouring books and practicing past exams with an eagerness I had never known before.”(有了这个新发现的智慧,我保证下次我会做得更好。
根据划线单词句中“I threw myself into my studies with renewed determination…practicing past exams with an eagerness I had never known before.”(我以全新的决心投入到学习中……

根据第二段“The study was completed by 3,993 adults who volunteered to join. And 25% of those who never played sports scored low on the willpower scale, compared to just 17% of those who did play sports.(这项研究由3993名自愿参加的成年人完成。
根据划线单词上文的句子“This additional finding about sports attending in adulthood suggests that you can build and perhaps lose willpower during different points in your life(这一关于成年后参加体育运动的额外发现表明,在人生的不同阶段,你可能会建立意志力,也可能会失去意志力)”可知,在人生的不同阶段,人们能培养意志力,也可能会失去意志力。

根据第四段中“This way, each student had both an art-focused class and a traditional one. Every unit was taught in both ways, to different groups of students.

故填a。
故填that/which。
故填Although/Though/While。
故填to be controlled。
故填As。

I stared at Mom and listened eagerly. She shared her own stories of failure and disappointment and how she turned them into opportunities for growth. “Every rejection is a lesson,” she said. With her guidance, I spent the next three months improving my skills. I practiced debates, read extensively to stay updated on current events, and sought feedback from teachers and peers. I even started a debate club after school to gain more experience.
I did make it when a second chance came 3 months later. When the team needed an extra member for an upcoming tournament, they considered my dedication and improvement. This time, I was ready. My performance in the tryouts was confident and well-prepared. Joining the team was a sweet victory, but the real win was in the resilience I had built and the lessons I had learned along the way. My mother’s wisdom had steered me through a tough time, and I was grateful for the journey that had made me a better debater and a stronger person.
