After travelling nearly 10,000 kilometers, a package from Britain arrived at the memorial hall for the Lisbon Maru incident on Dongji Island in Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province this month. Inside the package was a painting belonging to Graham Saxby, which was his gift to the fishermen on Dongji Island.
In October 1942, the Lisbon Maru, an armed Japanese cargo ship, was torpedoed(鱼雷击中) off the Zhoushan islands in Zhejiang, and it was the Americans who carried out this action. The ship was transporting some 1,800 British prisoners of war (POWs) from Hong Kong to Japan, among whom was Saxby's father. While the ship was sinking, the POWs were confined (监禁) in the holds. As they tried to escape, many were shot by the Japanese. Local Chinese fishermen risked their lives during the shooting and rescued as many POWs as they could using their small boats. A total of 384 British POWs were rescued by the fishermen, for which the British government and people were deeply grateful. A special screening of the documentary The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru was held in London on August 15. Survivors recalled the incident in the film.
After learning that Saxby was going to gift the locals a painting. Wu Xiaofei, a painter on Dongji Island, returned his friendship with a painting. “My grandfather was one of the fishermen who took part in the rescue, rowing a boat back and forth several times to rescue the POWs,” Wu says. She finished her drawing, which shows the joy, unity and harmony of fishermen, in just three days.
To help bring the forgotten historical event to light, Saxby is now asking a painter to create a second work to show the rescue scene, while another painting related to the incident by Wu has been completed and is ready for exhibition.
24. Who is Graham Saxby

A. She drew a picture in return. B. She sent a letter of thanks to him.
C. She told him her grandfather's story. D. She showed his picture to the fishermen.
27. What's the best title of the text
A. Peace Takes Brave Men to Win It

Inspired by the effortless way humans handle objects without seeing them, a team led by engineers at the University of California San Diego has developed a new approach that enables a robotic hand to rotate(旋转) objects only through touch, without relying on vision.
Using their technique, the researchers built a robotic hand that can smoothly rotate various objects, from small toys, cans, and even fruits and vegetables, without damaging them. The robotic hand accomplished these tasks using only information based on touch. The work could aid in the development of robots that can manipulate objects in the dark.
To build their system, the researchers attached 16 touch sensors to the palm and fingers of a four-fingered robotic hand. Each sensor costs about $12 and serves a simple function: detect whether an object is touching it or not.
What makes this approach unique is that it relies on many low-cost touch sensors that use simple, binary(二进制的) signals — touch or no touch — to perform robotic in-hand rotation. These sensors are spread over a large area of the robotic hand. This contrasts with other approaches that rely on a few high-cost touch sensors added to a small area of the robotic hand, primarily at the fingertips.
The researchers then tested their system on the real· life robotic hand with objects that the system has not yet encountered. The robotic hand was able to rotate varieties of objects without stalling or losing its hold. The objects included a tomato, a pepper, a can of peanut butter and a toy rubber duck. which was the most challenging object due to its shape.
Wang and his team are now working on extending their approach to more complex manipulation tasks. They are currently developing techniques to enable robotic hands to catch, throw and juggle, for example. “If we can give robots this skill, that will open the door to the kinds of tasks they can perform.” said Wang.
28. What does the underlined word “manipulate” probably mean in Paragraph 2
A. Control. B. Remove. C. Recognize. D. Distribute.
29. What can we know about touch sensors of the robotic hand
A. They are quite expensive. B. They cover most of its area.
C. They perform complex tasks. D. They are mainly in its fingertips.
30. Which is the most difficult for the robotic hand to rotate
A. A pepper. B. A tomato.
C. A can of peanut butter. D. A toy rubber duck.
31. What will the researchers probably focus on next
A. Cooperating with other firms. B. Perfecting robotic hand skills.
C. Diversifying robotic hand shapes. D. Seeking new ways to develop robots.

Who among us has never laughed out loud when a friend stumbles(绊倒) on the pavement impacts their head while standing up, or misses a step on the stairs But shouldn't we actually feel empathy (共情) for the person involved Rest assured. our laughter is not brought about by lack of empathy or sadism.
Faced with this surprising and strange situation, our brain searches for information that will allow us to interpret what is happening and to react accordingly. What does the face of the person who stumbles communicate to us What we decode(解码) will determine our reaction.
A study explored this phenomenon with participants who were asked to view 210 images representing three types of faces: faces expressing a puzzled look; faces expressing pain or anger, people whose bodies were placed in awkward positions, without the face being visible (e. g. the face hidden by skis or the head shown with the face hidden by the person's arm).
Twenty extra landscape images were added to the set of photos in order to confuse patricians about the purpose of the study. Participants were asked to press a button each time a landscape image appeared and their brain activity was recorded during the task. Participants were also asked to indicate how funny they thought each image was.
At the end of the study, participants rated the images with puzzled faces as funnier than images in which the faces expressed pain or anger, and funnier than images in which bodies were shown in ridiculous positions but no facial expression was seen. The brain data also supported facial express ice as a factor in how funny we found these unusual situations to be.
So, let's forgive ourselves for laughing at comical situations involving other people's clumsiness as we are reacting to their surprise and to their puzzled expressions, having interpreted that they ex not actually in suffering and have not really hurt themselves.
32. Which is the determinant of laugh in the case mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. Lack of communication skills. B. Responses of the rest of the people.
C. Understanding of the funny situation. D. Being unable to understand others' feelings.
33. Why were participants shown landscape pictures
A. To entertain them. B. To make their tasks challenging.
C. To observe their facial expressions. D. To obtain their unaffected judgement.
34. What will probably amuse us when a man stumbles
A. His confused expression. B. His clumsiness
C. His stupid body position. D. His painful look.
35. What is the best title of the text
A. Should we laugh when others fall down B. What should we do when others suffer
C. Why do we laugh when others fall down D. How should we react when others suffer

Summer holiday is wrapping up. Here are some smart steps you can take now to get your sleep back on track for an awesome school year.
Stick to a bedtime. Going to bed at about the same time every night helps you fall asleep more easily. To pinpoint(精准确定) your ideal bedtime, first think about how much sleep you need, and what time you need to wake up in the morning. 36 For example, if you want to get 10 hours of sleep and have to wake up at 7 a. m. to get ready for school, you will need to be asleep at 9 p. m.
Wind down before bed. Try to spend about an hour before bed relaxing. 37 For the first20 minutes, get yourself prepared for the next day by setting up your backpack and laying out your clothes. This helps case your mind, since you won't be worrying about those tasks in the morning. 38 Finally, for the last 20 minutes, do something that helps you fall asleep more easily, like reading a book or listening to calming music.
Don't damage your sleep. What you eat and do during the day can affect your sleep. Try to avoid drinks and food that have caffeine in the afternoon and evening. Working out does help you feel more tired. 39 Try not to text, watch TV, or play video games for at least two hours before bed because the light from the screens — even a small screen like the one on your phone — can trick your body into thinking it's daytime.
40 People tend to sleep in on weekends, but oversleeping on some days can destroy your sleep rhythms for the rest of the week. Wake up at your usual time, or as close to it as you can, to stay well rested all week.
A. Stay consistent.
B. Make sure you sleep enough.
C. And then count backward from there.
D. That can get your body and mind ready for sleep.
E. But exercise before bedtime can make it hard to wind down.
F. Next, set aside 20 minutes for showering and brushing your teeth.
G. And you're checking off all the supplies you need for a new beginning.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Warm sunlight streamed through the window while David was sitting at the kitchen table, trying hard to understand a famous literary classic. Flocks of clouds were floating high in the sky. Nearby, the big new apartment buildings stood along the road. The faint sound of cars could be beard. His mother was cutting tomatoes for their dinner as usual.
Suddenly, she said, “You know, the thing I want most is to make a really hot salsa(辣番茄酱)with fresh peppers from the garden.” She sighed. “That's what I miss most about Merida.” David looked up from his book in surprise. His mother had never talked like this about their old life before. He watched her carefully. She looked a little sad, but then she smiled at him and put the cut tomatoes into the cooking pot.
“But I've already known a lot about this new country, David,” she said. “First of all, I've found that there are different ways to make a salsa!” She showed him a packet of chili powder and they both laughed.
Watching his mother busy in the kitchen preparing dinner, David thought about what his mother had told him about her feelings, and he realized that he felt the same way about leaving.
Sure, it had been great for his father to get this good job, but it had also been hard. David missed his old home— especially the sun and the beach. And his mother missed Merida, too. She had loved working in her market garden, selling the fresh vegetables that she had grown herself and then coming home to cook up huge tasty meals for her family. David's stomach rumbled at the memories.
He thought about how different things were for them now, living in this large, grey apartment building where there was no garden and no friends coming to share their delicious meals. He sighed. At least they could still talk with his grandmother in Mexico over the computer every night after dinner—— Grandmother! Abuela!
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly David had an idea. A week later, a box arrived from Mexico.

“Colorful China” in My Picture
In the photography competition themed “Colorful China”, my entry won the first prize!
I submitted a photo of a vast golden wheat field under the setting sun. The gentle breeze made the wheat waves ripple, and the warm glow of the setting sun painted the entire field with a layer of golden light. This scene reminded me of the hardworking farmers and their fruitful harvest.
I am extremely thrilled and honored to have won the award. This contest has not only allowed me to show the beauty of our motherland but also made me appreciate the charm of nature and the efforts of our people.
第二节
One possible version:
Suddenly David had an idea. Why not turn to Abuela for help Seized by the increasing eagerness to contact his grandmother, he wolfed his supper once it was ready. Right after dinner, David raced to the computer before he had even had his favorite dessert, leaving his mother in curiosity. The moment he got through to his grandmother via the video chat, he lowered his voice whispering, “Abuela, I need your help!” After David poured out his idea, Abuela clapped her hands promising, “Excellent! You’ll receive what you want!” Beside himself with joy, David waved goodbye to Abuela, expectantly waiting for the package.
A week later, a box arrived from Mexico. Bubbling over with excitement, David invited his mother to open the box together. Unfolding before their eyes were a sealed package of dried peppers and a colorful packet of seeds. “That's what I miss most! A taste from HOME!” blurted out his mother, her lips curving into a broad beam and eyes glittering in amazement. Never had David seen his mother so cheerful in weeks. Moments later his mother was preparing a salsa using the peppers, chopping tomatoes and humming a merry tune. Outside the kitchen window, a big pot containing the seeds gleamed in the sunlight.

Text 1
W: Bill, you look sleepy today.
M: I know. I usually wake up at 7:00 am, but the time changed this weekend. I missed an hour of sleep.
W: Oh, I know that feeling.
Text 2
M: Karen, what about going to the theater after dinner tonight
W: Sorry, Mike, but I haven't gone to the gym for days. I must go tonight. You can go with me if you want.
M: Well, I'd rather sit comfortably at the theater.
Text 3
M: So, Susan, tell me about it.
W: I've just been feeling terrible for a week and last night I just couldn't do my homework. So my dad said I'd better make an appointment and come to see you.
Text 4
W: Honey, are you going to the office today
M: Yes. The medicine I took yesterday was highly effective. I feel much better now.
W: Well, if I were you, I'd choose to rest one more day.
Text 5
W: Did you have a good time with your uncle's family during the Christmas, Peter
M: Yes. I had a really nice time with my cousins. We got on really well. I've invited them to come to our city for a trip.
Text 6
M: Jennie, have you finished your homework
W: Yes, I borrowed Susan's notes and I've done all of it.
M: Are you ready for setting out
W: All ready. Wait a minute, I'm getting this feeling I forget something. Oh, my iPad. How can I forget it
M: No, stop, honey. No iPad— no online talk, no iPad game— this trip, I have told you and you also promised.
W: Sorry. But I worry that there's not anything interesting to do.
M: Try it! I won't take my laptop this time. Relax ourselves in the natural scenery—— the mountain, the sky, and the waterfall.
W: Will it be more amazing than going to old towns
M: Of course. I remember you say you're not fond of visiting modern cities either, as they look alike.
W: OK, try once.
Text 7
W: Hello. May I have an ice-cream, please
M: Sorry, this is an art truck, but I'm not surprised. Many people have mistaken it for a food truck.
W: Sounds interesting. I've never heard about it.
M: This art truck is a mobile center for hands-on art-making. It is an initiative by the Albright-Knox art gallery. It's meant to bring art activities as well as art supplies to different communities all over western New York.
W: What do you usually do
M: I usually travel to schools, libraries and other non-profit organizations and oversee a variety of art activities.
W: Do you find the work tiring
M: Not at all. It's really fun to bring it to different audiences whether they're children, adults, individuals with disabilities, or senior citizens. Besides, I love art and want to learn more about it. Every time I'm doing an art truck activity, if it has to do with drawing, I'm learning as well.
W: Amazing!

W: Welcome to join us tonight, Mr. Favreau. So could you tell us something about your new TV show, please
M: Certainly. It's a documentary titled Prehistoric Planet. It tells fascinating facts about dinosaurs that lived on this planet 66 million years ago.
W: Why did you want to make such a documentary
M: Well, back in the year 2006I watched a documentary titled Planet Earth. I was greatly impressed and I wanted to make such one with dinosaurs.
W: Did you get any help with the making
M: Yes. After all, we didn't do any professional research. So we turned to dinosaur experts. The scientists’ expert knowledge of dinosaurs was brought to the screen with advanced animation techniques. It takes audiences into the distant past.
W: Is the documentary just about dinosaurs
M: No. We also want to educate people on the importance of healthy ecosystems of Earth. And what drives our humanity is understanding and discovering more things.
W: Wow, it's really great news for children interested in dinosaurs. That's all for today's program. Thank you again for joining us tonight, Mr. Favreau.
M: The honor is all mine.

He is a leader in the fashion world and influences its many trends. Today, we' re talking about the man behind the name, Giorgio Armani. At present, we recognize him as one of the world's most famous fashion designers, but he was not always interested in this field. He was born in Italy, where he was raised with his brother and his sister. In high school, he was inspired to become a doctor, which led him to apply to the Department of Medicine at the University of Milan. He studied there for three years before deciding to join the army, where he was assigned to the military hospital in Verona. After that, he returned home to work at a men's department store in Milan, and he became familiar with the marketing and designing aspects in clothing.
A friend there convinced him to open up his own design shop in 1973. Two years later, they released a clothing line under the name Giorgio Armani. He began designing women's clothing. In1979, he began producing clothing for the United States market. In the early 1980s, he was persuaded to create perfumes for L’Oreal. He also designed the uniforms for the Chelsea Football Club in England, as well as the Italian uniforms for the 2012 Olympics.
