Recently, a fashion designing course (设计课程) given by a middle school in Shenzhen won first prize in an art course competition. Unlike traditional art courses, the course teaches students to design and make their own dresses.
After learning about the characters of traditional Hakka (客家的) clothes, students in pairs spent an hour making their dresses during a fashion design class. In each pair, two students acted as a customer and a fashion designer. They discussed their creations. After discussions, they finally turned a piece of fabric (布料) into a traditional Hakka dress. Then, they showed their work and received ideas from other students and the teachers.
The idea to start a fashion designing course came out in 2019. The art teachers wanted to add the local cultural traditions into their teaching. The school lies in an area with a large Hakka population. So the teachers in the school taught about the history of the Hakka people and their clothing. The school also organized trips to nearby museums. There students watched Hakka clothes from the past carefully. Besides, some local people were invited to make speeches on how to design traditional Hakka clothes.
