In the years that followed the day, whenever I saw P. K. Page, a great poet in interviews or documentaries, I always thought to myself, “I know that woman. I’ve seen the inside of her fridge.” I even considered writing to her to thank her for being patient with me that day instead of just sending me away. That meeting encouraged me to keep writing, even teens of years later.
I was about to graduate from college then, strongly hoping to prove myself in the area of journalism (新闻业) . Weeks before, I had chosen P. K. Page to interview as my graduation project. After leaving school for many years, a group of graduates (毕业生) visited their teacher. All of them complained about problems and stress in their work and life.
The teacher went to the kitchen and returned with a large bottle of coffee and many kinds of cups — china (瓷), plastic and glass. He told them to help themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in their hands, the teacher said, “If you noticed, all the nice-looking and expensive cups had been taken, but the simple and cheap ones had been left behind. Although it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source (根源) of your problems and stress. In fact, the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. Brad daydreamed throughout history class and missed an important lesson on the Grand Canal. At night, he found himself stuck when doing his homework on this ancient Chinese project. A moment later, he thought of his Sight Pro, the smart glasses, and put them on.
“Teach me about the Grand Canal.” Before he knew it, this simple instruction took the boy on a journey along the canal. He started in Hangzhou and was now slowly traveling up north toward Yangzhou.
He was taking in the fascinating views on the banks of the canal when Sight Pro suddenly said, “ ★ ”
“Are you giving me a quiz Hmm, bring it on.”
A question appeared before his eyes: “What is the total length of the Grand Canal Is it more than 1,000 kilometers or 2,000 kilometers ”
“I’ll go for 1,000 kilometers.” It took Brad two seconds to decide.
“Wrong answer. The Grand Canal is a system of more than 2,000 kilometers of man-made waterways. It’s the longest in the world.”

In the end, Brad scored zero on all the questions, but he was pleased that he had learned a lot.
“A big change happened to the Grand Canal during the Yuan Dynasty because the capital was moved to Beijing. Emperors needed new routes,” he wrote in response to one question. “This year is its tenth anniversary as a World Heritage Site (世界文化遗产),” he read out another answer as he wrote it down.

Mathilde Wittock, a designer from Belgium, makes resting chairs using old tennis balls. She creates them with no wood or plastic. Instead, each of her chairs is made up of 500 tennis balls. It is both stylish and strong.
Wittock wants to help protect the environment because many tennis balls are thrown away and don’t break down easily. About 300 million tennis balls are produced each year— and almost all of them end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场). It takes them over 400 years to decompose. Big tennis events use a large number of balls, like the U. S. Open with 70,000 and Wimbledon with 55,000. The lifecycle of a ball is not long, which usually lasts for nine games.
Wittock receives all her materials from donations, mostly from tennis clubs. It takes Wittock three to four weeks to make a chair. To meet the customers’ needs, she cuts and colours the tennis balls by hand to match their rooms. It takes her much hard work and patience to change how the balls look.
But creation isn’t the only goal. In fact, what’s more important to Wittock is what happens to the chair when it’s old. At the end of her chair’s life, she takes it apart and recycles the tennis balls. The fuzz (绒毛) is burned off, and the ball is cut into pieces to make bouncy mats(弹性垫) for kids to play on. In this way, nothing goes to waste.

5.What’s the last paragraph mainly about
A.How to continuously reduce waste.
B.How to make tennis balls into mats.

Then came the next question: “When did the building of the canal begin ”
“Was it in the 7th century ” Brad responded hesitantly.
“Wrong answer. It started in the 5th century B.C. E. (公元前). After that, different sections were built at different times. In the 7th century, Emperor Yang of Sui expanded (扩大) the canal to its present scale (规模) by linking the sections.”
“How amazing!” Brad continued his journey for a while.
Then came the third question: “Why was the Grand Canal built ”
“To make it easier for people to travel around the country.”
“Wrong answer. Its primary function was to transport food from the rich lands in the south to the capital city in the north. It was also used to transport goods.”

A.Plastic bottles. B.Used tennis balls.
C.Recycled glasses. D.Old wooden boxes.
2.What does the underlined word “decompose” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.To become chairs. B.To wash away the landfills.
C.To grow from land. D.To divide into smaller parts.
3.What can be learned about tennis balls from paragraph 2
A.They are helpful to the environment.
B.Fewer balls should be used in big matches.
C.Many balls are needed in big tennis events.
D.About 300 million balls are made each month.
4.Where does Wittock get most of the tennis balls for her chairs
A.From landfills. B.From her customers.
C.From tennis clubs. D.From some charities.
5.What’s the last paragraph mainly about
A.How to continuously reduce waste.
