Roommates come in all different walks of life; some are quiet, tidy, and kind, while others can be loud, and terrible. If you are having a hard time dealing with your roommate, for whatever reason, then read on to find out how to make peace, get along, and live in a happy relationship.
The first step in dealing with a difficult roommate is to find out why you think your roommate is being difficult. Remember, different people come from different backgrounds, so what is annoying (讨厌的) to you may be perfectly fine for others (like your roommate). Do you get annoyed by the dirty socks? Are you upset that your roommate always plays loud music or has friends over? The sooner you figure out what is bothering you, the sooner you will be able to face the problem and find a way to solve it.
There will come a time when you will probably have to face your roommate about the problems that are bothering you. When you do, be kind, considerate (体谅的), and gentle. It wouldn’t help any if you are more angry, going off about every little thing that your roommate does. Remember, you may be roommates for a long time, so it’s important to be diplomatic with the situation. Try not to make your roommate feel as though you are attacking him or her. Explain your position and what you are having trouble with, and express that you are willing to make compromises (妥协) if need be.
Here are some more tips that may help.
—Set up schedules for visiting hours, days, and times.
—Agree on schedules for using the bathroom, kitchen, entertaining guests, etc.
—Try not to be the boss of your roommate, because your roommate also deserves his or her
own right.
—If worst comes to worst, talk with your teacher about how you can deal with the situation and
if there is a possibility to change rooms (or roommates).
49. The text is mainly about _____.
A. how to live a good life B. how to deal with bad emotions
C. how to get on well with a roommate D. how to make good friends at school
50. It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that _____.
A. one should treat his roommate objectively (客观地)
B. everyone has his strengths and weaknesses
C. it’s bad to live with a difficult roommate
D. one should give up his bad habits
51. The underlined word “diplomatic” in Paragraph 3 probably means “_____”.
A. happy B. certain C. skillful D. concerned
52. What can be concluded from the tips given in the text?
A. All problems should be solved by the students themselves.
B. General rules should be set for you and your roommate to follow.
C. You should always be ready to handle your roommate’s daily life.
D. Changing rooms is not advised no matter how the situation is.
C
In the second half of each year, many powerful storms are born in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean seas. Of these, only about half a dozen generate the strong, circling winds of 75 miles per hour or more that give them hurricane status, and several usually make their way to the coast. There they cause millions of dollars of damage, and bring death to large numbers of people.
The great storms that hit the coast start as innocent circling disturbances hundreds ---even thousands---of miles out to sea. As they travel aimlessly over water warmed by the summer sun, they are carried westward by the trade winds. When conditions are just right, warm, moist air flows in at the bottom of such a disturbance, moves upward through it and comes out at the top. In the process, the moisture in this warm air produces rain and with it the heat that is converted to energy in the form of strong winds. As the heat increases the young hurricane begins to turn in a counter-clockwise motion.
The average life of a hurricane is only about nine days, but it contains almost more power than we can imagine. The energy in the heat released by a hurricane’s rainfall in a single day would satisfy the entire electrical needs of the United States for more than six months. Water, not wind, is the main source of death and destruction in a hurricane. A typical hurricane brings 6 to 12-inch downpours resulting in sudden floods. Worst of all is the powerful movement of the sea---the mountains of water moving toward the low-pressure hurricane center. The water level rises as much as 15 feet above normal as it moves toward shore.
53. When is a storm considered to be a hurricane?
A. When it is accompanied by wind.
B. When the circling winds bring damages.
C. When it is accompanied by both wind and rain.
D. When its circling winds move at 75 miles per hour or even more.
54. The underlined “it” in “moves upward through it” in Paragraph 2 refers to “_____”.
A. the disturbance B. moist air C. trade wind D. water
55. Strong winds are produced because of _____.
A. the heat generated along with rain
B. the young hurricane
C. a disturbance
D. moist air
56. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. The Hurricane---Its Harms and Benefits.
B. The Origin and Effects of Hurricane.
C. The Hurricane and Its Great Energy.
D. The Disasters Caused by Hurricane.
D
We all know that life without emojis (表情符号) would be extremely boring. Therefore, it is fitting that the editors of the well-known Oxford English Dictionary chose — the face with the tears of joy as its “Word of the Year” for 2015.
The company that announced its unusual word choice said that it was picked over several other traditional choices. Among them were “refugee”, “sharing economy” and “on fleek”. However, it was this simple emoji that resonated (共鸣) with the editors because it appeared to best describe the spirits, mood and concerns of 2015.
They also thought that 2015 was a good year to pay honor to the emojis. Because though they have been around since the late 1990s, the use of the digital signs increased sharply in 2015. Besides, emojis are now used by people of all ages, not just teenagers.
Though the word “emoji” comes from the Japanese language, the digital signs can be understood by everyone regardless of (不管) the language he speaks. Therefore, it only makes sense to acknowledge their importance to global communication.
How did they select from the thousands of emojis? The company said that they partnered with a leading mobile technology company SwiftKey to determine the most popular emoji. It turned out that “tears of joy” was the most used icon. According to SwiftKey, made up 17% of all emojis used in the USA and a surprising 20% in the UK.
Though this is the first time the Oxford University Press has selected an image for its “Word of the Year”, it isn’t the first time they have tried to combine modem lingo (术语) into their 150-year-old publication. In 2013, in recognition of the growing popularity of self-portraits, the editors selected “selfie” for the “Word of the Year”!
57. Why does the author say the word choice is unusual?
A. It isn’t actually a word.
B. Many people don’t know it.
C. It refers to a sad expression.
D. It appeared in the late 1990s.
58. Oxford English Dictionary chooses as its “Word of the Year” for 2015 because
_____.
A. it reflects the happiness of English people
B. it focuses on the development of the language
C. it is the simplest among all the words and expressions
D. it best agrees with the standard of the word choice in 2015
59. We can know from Paragraph 4 that _____.
A. the emojis are frequently used among teenagers
B. people are encouraged to use emojis instead of' words
C. Japanese borrow the word “emoji” from the English language
D. emojis help people get over language difficulties in communication
60. How did Oxford English Dictionary select this particular emoji?
A. By voting online.
B. By doing experiments.
C. By interviewing scientists.
D. By working with SwiftKey.

Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do. Her name was Mrs. White. And I remember thinking she must be some older relation of Walt Disney’s Snow White, because she had the same bright blue eyes, short dark hair and clear skin.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But there were no red correction. And always a star. Sometimes even a Good! It worried my mother, so one day when my mother went in to meet Mrs. White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked Mrs. White why she never corrected my mistakes, why she never red-penciled in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical mistakes.
Mrs. White said, “The children are just beginning to get excited about using words and forming sentences. I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm (打击热情) with red corrections. What is the most important for kids writing is that spelling and grammar can wait but the wonder of words won’t. They will grow up learning to use words with loving confidence.”
It occurs to me that if Mrs. White had used her red pen more exactly I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather wonderful teacher一to exercise such red-pen-restraint (克制使用红笔的).
And thanks to Mrs. White I had no doubt about writing what I meant even if I couldn’t spell it out.

Text 8
In Match, 2010, an earthquake struck my hometown. I had just returned home from school and was going to watch TV. No one else was home at the time. As soon as I sat down on the sofa, I felt it move a little. At first, I didn’t pay much attention to it. But after about two seconds, it moved again and I realized it was an earthquake. I tried to get under the table. But it moved away before I could reach it. The ground was shaking so violently that I couldn’t walk straight. Luckily, I finally managed to hide behind a door. After about twenty seconds, the quake stopped. I had survived. I reached for my phone and began trying to contact my family, but I couldn’t get through. I became afraid that there would be smaller shocks to follow, so I ran out. About twenty minutes later, my parents came back. Neither of them was injured. After the earthquake, I felt both sad and lucky. I felt sad because more than 200 people died that day. I felt lucky because all my family survived.
