In the small town of Elmsworth, life usually followed the changing of seasons and familiar faces that could be seen around. However, when a powerful tornado swept through the town, it destroyed many things in its path, including the Anderson family’s home.
The Andersons, known for their friendly and welcoming nature, suddenly found themselves in a difficult situation. The news of their trouble spread quickly among the people of Elmsworth. A group of neighbours, led by the town’s elders, wasted no time jumping into action to offer support to the Andersons.
Volunteers from all walks of life gathered at the site of the ruined home, armed with tools, materials, and a determination to rebuild not just a house, but a sense of safety and warmth. The local store offered a discount on the necessary supplies, and nearby people provided food and shelter for the Andersons during the rebuilding process. The high school’s sports teams, known for their competitive spirit, took a break from their training to contribute their strength and energy to the rebuilding efforts. The walls of the new home began to rise, brick by brick, with each part showing the care and contribution of the Elmsworth people.
As the days turned into weeks, the spirit of teamwork strengthened. A local artist, inspired by the collective effort, painted a mural (壁画) on a nearby building, which presented the image of the Anderson family surrounded by the faces of their neighbours, showing the love and strength that held them together. The recovery of Elmsworth in the face of disaster became a symbol of hope for other towns facing similar challenges.

As an important part of our everyday lives, music is increasingly being used in medical treatment. Besides proving very useful in cancer treatment, managing long-term pain and even helping the brain recover after a stroke, researchers have been making great progress in using music to help patients with dementia (失智症). It reduces patients’ anxiety or stress, lifts their spirits, and improves their performance at work.
So why does music appear to have such a powerful effect on people with dementia About ten years ago, researchers discovered that when people listened to music, many areas of the brain took part in processing it. Research has also shown music might help the brain and its connections grow strong again. It is believed that music could help people with dementia by fixing or strengthening damaged neural (神经的) connections and cells.
It’s not just any music that has a great effect on the brain, though. Familiar and favourite music has been shown to have the biggest influence on the way we feel, and is closely connected with memory and emotions. This is because listening to our favourite songs helps to produce feel-good hormones (荷尔蒙) that give us a sense of pleasure. During and after listening to favourite music, people with dementia experienced less pain and anxiety, and their general feelings improved.
Other researchers have even begun testing the effects of music training programs to support cognition (认知) for people with dementia. Results have been promising so far, with adults in the study showing improved conditions, compared to those who took part in just physical exercise.
So, music is likely to continue to be a useful medical treatment for people with dementia. But based on what we know so far, it’s important that it comes from the patient’s own music collection and is used together with other medical treatments such as taking medicine.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the passage
A. By presenting facts. B. By raising questions.
C. By explaining reasons. D. By giving predictions.
9. What may familiar and favourite music contribute to people with dementia
A It reduces emotional stress. B. It advances creative thinking.
C. It enriches work experience. D. It develops learning strategies.
10 What does the underlined word “promising” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Changeable. B. Confusing. C. Hopeful. D. Normal.
11. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. A course plan. B. An art brochure.
C. A medical textbook. D. A science magazine.
D
The Perseverance rover (探测器) has discovered signs of water on the Martian surface, appearing as dark lines that change with the seasons. Scientists tend to think that these lines are caused by short-lived flows of salty water during Mars’ warmer months when temperatures rise above the freezing point.
Water, necessary for life, is found wherever life exists on our planet. That there may be water on Mars, even in small amounts, raises the possibility that the planet may have supported life forms in the past or could possibly host some form of life today. This latest discovery is a major step in our journey to understand Mars and its potential (可能性) to host life.
The Perseverance rover is equipped with a set of scientific tools that are helping scientists in examining the Martian environment. Its top task is to search for signs of ancient life forms and to collect samples (样本) of rock and soil, which could be returned to Earth in future tasks for further study. By looking closely at the dirt and rock samples, scientists are hoping to find the basic pieces that make up life, which could give us clues about whether Mars was ever a good place for life to develop.
The search for water on Mars is not just about finding water; it’s about finding our place in the universe. Each discovery made by the Perseverance rover announces our innovation (创新) and our endless searching. As we stand on the edge of these discoveries, the universe seems a little less vast and more familiar. The search for water on Mars is, in fact, a search for signs of life and a reflection of our own existence among the stars.
As the Perseverance rover continues its exploration, we can look forward to more findings that will bring us closer to answering the age-old question: Are we alone in the universe
12. What possibly causes the dark lines on the Martian surface
A. The freezing point. B. Rising temperature.
C. Flows of salty water. D. Movement of planets.
13. What is one aim of the Perseverance rover
A. To map the surface of Mars. B. To find clues to life forms on Mars.
C. To examine samples from Mars. D. To adapt to the environment on Mars.
14. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. Mars offers a better home to mankind.
B. The survival of mankind is under threat.
C. Our exploration and innovation never end.
D. The discovery allows humans to land on Mars.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Research on Mars Unfinished B. Task on Mars Completed
C. Martian Life Forms Discovered D. Water Signs Found on Mars

I was born small, which often left me feeling unconfident. During my second year of high school, my family moved to a different city. Getting used to life as a new kid has always been difficult for me, and this move made it more challenging. In my new school, I felt physically and mentally uneasy. Other students had already built friendships, leaving me without a friend.
Besides, I found English learning boring and didn’t know what to do during English classes. So, I spent my free time drawing because that was what I usually did when I was alone.
I still recall the first day in the school dining hall. While waiting in line for food, I heard a group of students excitedly discussing an upcoming English drama show for freshmen. As I passed by, they glanced at me with surprise. “He looks so small,” someone said in a low voice. My face burned with embarrassment and I bent my head. Pretending not to hear them, I slipped into the farthest seat available and had my meal alone.
In my first English class, I sat at my desk, staring blankly at the book. The letters and words seemed to dance confusingly across the page and laugh at me. Losing interest quickly, I began drawing on the book. A few minutes later, my English teacher, Mr. Frank — a kind man — walked up to me.
“Nice drawing,” he said gently. “You know, language is also an art form; it carries its own charm (魅力) and beauty. I believe you could find English attractive if you discover whereto begin.”

【47题答案】
【答案】 Encouraged by his words, I began to change my attitude towards English learning. I started to focus more attentively on English classes, following Mr. Frank’s instructions with great care. I discovered the charm of how individual letters could form meaningful words. Although the progress was slow, that slight improvement still brought me some hope. Mr. Frank was always ready to offer me guidance whenever necessary. Gradually, I developed a deep admiration for English. I became more active in speaking up and communicating with my classmates. This new-found enthusiasm made me more outgoing and open-minded, and I even made some new friends.
“Why don’t you draw a poster for the English drama show ” Mr. Frank said to me. Excited and nervous, I accepted. It was a good chance to contribute with my artistic skills. Over the next few days, I drew colorful posters combining text and pictures. The process helped me remember vocabulary and grammar points better. To my delight, Mr. Frank praised my work and selected one poster for the show. Seeing my artwork displayed in the school gave me a strong sense of belonging. Thanks to Mr. Frank’s encouragement and trust, I discovered the beauty of English and found the confidence to express myself.
