At 67, Joyce Faulkner thought she was looking for a holiday. Her husband, Jim, had recently died and exploring possible house swaps on the Home Exchange website felt less painful. In the end, it was not a vacation Faulkner found but a job. She left her home in Edinburgh to become mother’s help to seven-year-old twins in Varese, Italy.
“It’s halfway crazy,” she says. A house swap she was interested in didn’t work out, but the owner, Rachele, asked: “‘Do you know anyone who might help me with the children ’ I wrote back and said: ‘Tell me what that involves!’ She wrote me a little list, and I said: ‘I could do that!’ We seemed to believe in each other.”
Two months later, when Faulkner reached Varese, “the dad, Andrea, was walking towards me with the children hiding behind his legs, kind of shy, thinking: ‘Who is this woman in a long black coat ’ I don’t think it was quite Mary Poppins, but the atmosphere was immediately warm and friendly.”
Eighteen months on, Faulkner’s job no longer feels like a job. “I just feel like part of the family.” They joke: “You think you’re going back to Scotland No, you’re staying here!” She gives English lessons, helps with the housework, meets the children from school, plays chess or table tennis with them, and takes them to the park. “It never feels like work,” she says. “It has been absolutely the perfect match.” Faulkner’s son, Steven, who lives in London, has visited her and they have cycled around the northern Italian lakes. She feels no more distant than when she lived in Edinburgh.
“You have to take the opportunity when it presents itself,” Jim once said.
“I’ll be 70 in January, but in my head, I’m 30. I still feel the same person, I have the same enthusiasm for life, the same interest in people and things. In that sense, I wish I had another 70,” Faulkner jokes.
4. Why did Joyce Faulkner search the Home Exchange website
A. To hunt for a job. B. To buy a house in Italy.
C. To explore holiday resorts. D. To find a holiday home for exchange.
5. What probably caused Faulkner to be hired by Rachele
A. Good luck. B. Mutal trust.
C. Common interests. D. First impression.
6. What can be inferred from paragraphs 3 and 4
A. Faulkner feels less close to her son
B. Faulkner feels quite at home while babysitting in Italy.
C. Faulkner returned to her old business despite her advanced years.
D. Faulkner was thought of as a typical baby-sitter at the first meeting.
7. Which of the following can best describe Joyce Faulkner
A. Caring and outgoing. B. Strict and responsible.
C. Devoted and passionate. D. Humorous and independent.

Turkmenistan is a country in Central Asia, near Afghanistan and Iran. In Darvaza, one of its villages, there is a very interesting feature. It is a massive hole in the ground-about 20 metres (65 feet) deep and 60 metres (196 feet) across. The enormous pit has been on fire for more than 50 years.
Why is the crater on fire The most popular theory is that in 1971, a team of geologists from the then-Soviet Union were drilling in the country’s Karakum Desert to try to find gas. The ground under the drill collapsed and methane (甲烷) gas began to escape into the air. The geologists decided the safest thing to do was to burn off the gas by lighting it on fire. They thought the fire would burn for only a few weeks. However, it has been burning steadily for more than 50 years.
According to a BBC article, Canadian explorer George Kourounis discovered in 2013 that “no one actually knows how this… inferno came to be.” But, now the crater may finally be extinguished.
Turkmenistan’s president, Mr. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, has asked scientists in the country to figure out how to put out the burning crater. He went on the country’s state-run television station on January 8 to encourage experts to find a way to stop the fire.
One of the reasons he wants the crater to be put out is that the country can collect the gas that fuels it. Gas is a very important and valuable resource and can be used for many purposes. If it’s just burning off, the gas cannot be used or sold. According to the website , the crater sits on the fourth largest reserve of natural gas in the world. Another reason the president may want the crater put out is to stop the harmful effects, to humans and the environment, of the burning gas.
8. Why did the geologists light the crater
A. To test the quality of the gas.
B. To exhaust the underground gas.
C. To prevent explosion of the gas.
D. To stop the escape of the gas.
9. What does the underlined word “inferno” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. The article. B. The theory. C. The fire. D. The president.
10. What does Turkmenistan’s president want to do
A. To protect the crater.
B. To find the reason of the fire.
C. To seek help from the public.
D. To exploit and use the gas.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. The Fire Crater May Soon Be Put Out
B. A Peculiar Scenic Spot in Turkmenistan
C. The Crater Burning for Fifty Years
D. The Harmful Effects of the Burning Gas
D
People with high levels of niacin, also known as vitamin B3, in their blood may be more likely to have a heart attack or stroke than those with lower levels. Excessive amounts of the vitamin, which is routinely added to fortified food and can be taken as a supplement, may inflame blood vessels.
Heart attacks and stroke are leading causes of death worldwide. While researchers have made significant strides over the past few decades in discovering the risk factors for these conditions, they haven’t identified them all.
In an effort to fill these gaps, Stanley Hazen at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and his colleagues collected blood samples from 2331 adults in the US and 832 adults in Europe who had elected to undergo cardiovascular screenings. The team analysed the samples for substances called metabolites, byproducts of metabolic processes such as digestion. The researchers then tracked incidents of cardiac events, such as heart attacks and strokes, among the participants over three years.
They found that people with elevated levels of a metabolite called 4PY, which only arises when the body breaks down excess niacin, were around 60 percent more likely, on average, to experience such an event than those with lower levels. And it was found in further experiment that 4PY causes blood vessel inflammation, a major contributor to the development of heart disease, in rodents.
It isn’t uncommon for people to have high niacin levels, Hazen says. This is partially due to certain foods, such as cereals and flours, being routinely fortified with the vitamin in countries that include the UK and the US. Niacin supplements are also increasingly popular as evidence suggests they have anti-ageing benefits, says Hazen. Plus, it wasn’t until recently that doctors stopped prescribing high-dose niacin to people at risk of cardiovascular disease, as it was initially thought the vitamin protected people from these conditions by lowering cholesterol.
“I think this study really shows that sometimes, when it comes to vitamins, you can have too much of a good thing,” says Jenny Jia at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. However, this research was mainly conducted in people of European ancestry. It is therefore unclear if similar results would occur in people of different racial or ethnic backgrounds, says Jia.
12. What is presented in paragraph 3
A. Theoretical models. B. Research procedures.
C. Practical examples. D. Historical findings.
13. What does the underlined phrase “such an event” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Increased 4PY. B. Extra niacin.
C. Blood vessel inflammation. D. Cardiovascular diseases.
14. What might not be the reason for people to have high niacin levels
A. Having niacin supplement is fashionable. B. Food with niacin can rapid aging.
C. Certain vitamins are added to foods. D. Niacin was prescribed to people.
15. What attitude might Jia have to the study
A. Neutral. B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.

Dear Peter,
I’m glad you’re interested in the Film Appreciation Society newly established in our school. The purpose of this society is to promote students’ understanding and appreciation of films from different cultures.
Our society usually meets on weekends in the school’s multimedia room. We watch a variety of classic and contemporary films together, followed by in-depth discussions about the themes, characters and filming techniques. Sometimes, we also invite professional film critics to give lectures, so that we can gain a deeper understanding of films.
If you want to join, I suggest that you prepare some basic knowledge about film history and theory in advance. This will help you better participate in our activities.
Yours,
Li Hua
