根据第二段中““It’s a mental battle for myself.” Refusing to be weighed down by his disability, Seawood draws strength from his mind, as he fights to make it through each step. “That takes a lot out of me. I push my body so hard that I’m tired,” said Seawood, who once thought he might have to give up the weights forever.(“这对我来说是一场精神上的战斗。”Seawood拒绝被自己的残疾所拖累,他从自己的思想中汲取力量,努力通过每一步。“这耗费了我很多精力。我对身体的压力太大了,以至于我很累,”Seawood说,他曾经认为他可能不得不永远放弃举重)”可知,在Seawood的举重中起着关键作用的是他坚强的意志。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段“Seawood ended up in a hospital bed with one leg after falling off a boat in Long Lake near Traverse City in June, 2019. His left leg got caught in the propeller and had to be cut.(2019年6月,Seawood在特拉弗斯城附近的长湖从船上摔下来,一条腿躺在了医院的病床上。他的左腿被螺旋桨卡住,不得不被切掉)”可知,一次事故导致了Nathan Seawood的残疾。故选A。
根据第二段中“Refusing to be weighed down by his disability, Seawood draws strength from his mind, as he fights to make it through each step.(Seawood拒绝被自己的残疾所拖累,他从自己的思想中汲取力量,努力通过每一步)”以及最后一段“Despite life’s best attempt to knock him down, Seawood is still standing, and while he may exercise differently from others, he’s thankful to still be moving. “I might have a disability, but I’m not disabled,” Seawood said.(尽管生活想尽办法把他打倒,但Seawood仍然站着,虽然他的运动方式可能与其他人不同,但他很庆幸自己还能活动。“我可能有残疾,但我不是无能,” Seawood说)”可推知,Nathan Seawood坚定而积极。故选D。
27. 推理判断题。根据第六段““He faces difficulties most of us don’t have to,” Jeff Phillips, who owns the gym, said. “I mean, he’s in here and he only has one leg, but he’s doing a lot of the same lifts everybody with two legs are doing. It’s surely encouraging to see him doing that.”(“他面临着我们大多数人不需要面对的困难,”这家健身房的老板Jeff Phillips说。
根据第一段“No one can say whether human-like robots will have a sweet dream, but they will almost certainly need periods of rest that offer benefits like what sleep provides to living brains, according to new research from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).(洛斯阿拉莫斯国家实验室的一项最新研究表明,没有人能说类人机器人是否会做一个甜美的梦,但它们几乎肯定需要休息一段时间,这种休息带来的好处与睡眠给人类带来的好处类似)”以及第二段“Watkins and her research team found that the network simulations became unstable after continuous periods of unattended learning.(沃特金斯和她的研究团队发现,在连续的无人值守学习后,网络模拟变得不稳定)”可知,沃特金斯和她的研究团队发现人造大脑可能也需要休息。故选B项。
根据第二段“Watkins and her research team found that the network simulations became unstable after continuous periods of unattended learning. When they exposed the networks to states that are analogous to what living brains experience during sleep, stability was recovered. “It was as though we were giving the neural networks a good night’s rest,” said Watkins.(沃特金斯和她的研究团队发现,在连续的无人值守学习后,网络模拟变得不稳定。当他们将网络暴露在analogous人脑在睡眠中经历的状态时,稳定性得到了恢复。沃特金斯说:“这就像我们让神经网络好好休息了一夜。”)”可知,在连续的无人值守学习后,人造大脑的网络变得不稳定,当将网络置于类似于人脑睡眠的状态时,稳定性得以恢复,推测划线单词表示“类似的”,与similar同义。故选C项。
30.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The group’s next goal is to apply their algorithm to Intel’s Loihi, a product which uses spiking neural networks to work. They hope allowing Loihi to sleep from time to time will enable it to stably process information from a camera in real time. If it can confirm the need for sleep in artificial brains, we can probably expect the same to be true of human-like robots and other intelligent machines that may come about in the future.(该团队的下一个目标是将他们的算法应用于英特尔的Loihi,这是一种使用尖峰神经网络工作的产品。他们希望,允许Loihi不时睡觉将使它能够稳定地实时处理来自摄像机的信息。如果它能证实在人造大脑中睡眠的必要性,我们很可能期望类似人类的机器人和未来可能出现的其他智能机器也是如此)”可知,研究人员会将该算法应用于Loihi是为了进一步证实他们的发现,睡眠对于人造大脑而言是必要的。故选C项。
31.推理判断题。根据第一段“No one can say whether human-like robots will have a sweet dream, but they will almost certainly need periods of rest that offer benefits like what sleep provides to living brains, according to new research from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).(洛斯阿拉莫斯国家实验室的一项最新研究表明,没有人能说类人机器人是否会做一个甜美的梦,但它们几乎肯定需要休息一段时间,这种休息带来的好处与睡眠给人类带来的好处类似)”以及文章内容可知,本文主要介绍了洛斯阿拉莫斯国家实验室的一项最新研究表明,机器人运行一段时间后也需要一段时间的休息,推测文章可能出自计算机与科学部分。

36.选项G. There are still tips making it easier for you to decide what to do, though.(不过,仍然有一些技巧可以让你更容易决定要做什么。)
37.根据前文“Listen to yourself first. (听你自己的。)”可知,本段的中心是听从自己的内心想法;空格前为举例证明本段中心思想,D选项“你内心的声音告诉你自己这是错的,你应该听从(它)”符合语境。故选D。
38.根据后文“However, just because someone is successful in their field doesn't necessarily mean they'll give you good advice.(然而,仅仅因为某人在他们的领域取得了成功并不一定意味着他们会给你好的建议。)”中的转折词However可知,空格处的句意与后句句意相反, F选项“Good advice always comes from those who are experts on the subject.”(好的建议总是来自于这方面的专家)与后句构成转折关系,故选F。
39.根据后文“Instead, reach out to several people whose judgment and experience you really trust.(相反,多与你真正信任其判断和经验的人接触。)”
40.后文“Take a little bit of time to think over any advice someone offers even if you have to make a quick decision. (花一点时间考虑一下别人提供的建议,即使你必须迅速做出决定。)”与选项A“给自己时间思考你收到的建议”所讲的内容一致,前后文连接顺畅,故选A

W: Hey, Mike! Did you attend Mr. Johnson’s lecture on the history of Chicago
M: Yes, I did. I didn’t see you there.
W: I was late for it. Wasn’t it a great lecture I learned so much!
M: It certainly was.
W: I thought it was an old city, but actually it didn’t officially become a town until 1833.
M: I’d heard it was a young city. But it was much tinier than I thought, with a population of only 350.
W: It was really a tiny town by then. But it’s a pity that after it developed much larger in 1871 a fire destroyed most of it.
M: Yeah, Chicago wasn’t even 40 years old at that time.
W: Yet only 22 years later, in 1893, Chicago was able to host a World’s Fair. It was such a huge development for the city.
M: Yes. Chicago was eager to show itself off to the rest of the world at the World’s Fair after it was rebuilt from the fire.
W: I will attend another lecture on Chicago’s economy next week. Will you be there too
M: I sure will, so see you next Thursday.

M: The Motor Show will be returning to Eastbrook this July, and if you thought last year’s show was good, you’re going to love the show this year. It’ll be held on the 18th of July, and this year the Motor Show will not take place on the Park School Field like last year, but will take place on the Three Tree Show Ground. This will give a lot more space for car parking, which was a problem last year. There will be lots of great things to see and do. There will be a display of old cars from as early as the 1920s, all in beautiful condition. There will also be a display of cars of the future—cars powered by electricity or the sun. If you want to go to the Eastbrook Motor Show, tickets are £12 for adults and £6 for children, but you can get a family ticket for two adults and up to three children for £30. If you want to avoid queues on the day, you should buy your tickets in advance.2024—2025 学年高二下学期英语开学考

A 23-year-old man can do weightlifting in many ways as hard as any other gym-goer, but he only has one leg. Nathan Seawood doesn’t let his disability keep him from the weight room. Instead, he’s learning to bear a different load.
“This isn’t just a physical battle in the gym,” Seawood said. “It’s a mental battle for myself.” Refusing to be weighed down by his disability, Seawood draws strength from his mind, as he fights to make it through each step. “That takes a lot out of me. I push my body so hard that I’m tired,” said Seawood, who once thought he might have to give up the weights forever.
Seawood ended up in a hospital bed with one leg after falling off a boat in Long Lake near Traverse City in June, 2019. His left leg got caught in the propeller and had to be cut.
“I didn’t want people to see me,” Seawood said. “I couldn’t accept what had happened to me because it’s a lifestyle change. And that was hard. I was down bad.”
Seawood said a therapist helped lift his spirits. “I wanted to be able to walk and that was difficult because I’m using muscles that never really get noticed as much,” Seawood said. Now he’s using those muscles to train hard at Grand Rapids City Gym, inspiring those around him to keep pushing.
“He faces difficulties most of us don’t have to,” Jeff Phillips, who owns the gym, said. “I mean, he’s in here and he only has one leg, but he’s doing a lot of the same lifts everybody with two legs are doing. It’s surely encouraging to see him doing that.”
Despite life’s best attempt to knock him down, Seawood is still standing, and while he may exercise differently from others, he’s thankful to still be moving. “I might have a disability, but I’m not disabled,” Seawood said.
24. What plays the key role in Seawood’s weightlifting
A. His right leg. B. The others’ encouragement.
C. His strong will. D. His family.
25. What led to Nathan Seawood’s disability
A. An accident. B. An early birth.
C. A serious disease. D. A medical mistake.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Nathan Seawood
A. Confident and honest. B. Smart and hardworking.
C. Calm and modest. D. Determined and positive.
27. Why is Jeff Phillips mentioned in paragraph 6
A. To tell Seawood’s sad story. B. To draw attention to weightlifting.
C. To speak highly of Seawood. D. To show sympathy for Seawood.

No one can say whether human-like robots will have a sweet dream, but they will almost certainly need periods of rest that offer benefits like what sleep provides to living brains, according to new research from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
“We study spiking neural networks(神经网络), which are systems that learn much as living brains do,” said Yijing Watkins, a computer scientist from LANL. “We trained a neuromorphic (神经形态的) processor in a way how humans and other biological systems learn from their environment during childhood development.” Watkins and her research team found that the network simulations(模拟) became unstable after continuous periods of unattended learning. When they exposed the networks to states that are analogous to what living brains experience during sleep, stability was recovered. “It was as though we were giving the neural networks a good night’s rest,” said Watkins.
The discovery came about as the research team worked to develop neural networks that are as close as how humans and other biological systems learn to see. The group initially struggled with stabilizing simulated neural networks undergoing unattended dictionary training, which involves classifying objects without providing examples to compare them to. The researchers expose the networks to an artificial simulation of sleep as nearly a final effort to stabilize them. They experimented with various types of noise. The best results came when they used waves of so-called Gaussian noise. These waves can make sure that the neural networks keep stable.
The group’s next goal is to apply their algorithm (算法) to Intel’s Loihi, a product which uses spiking neural networks to work. They hope allowing Loihi to sleep from time to time will enable it to stably process information from a camera in real time. If it can confirm the need for sleep in artificial brains, we can probably expect the same to be true of human-like robots and other intelligent machines that may come about in the future.
28. What did Watkins and her research team find
A. Neural networks are far from stable.
B. Artificial brains may need break as well.
C. Neural networks are very sensitive to noise.

It is a well-known fact that plastic bottles, which take hundreds of years to rot, are harmful to our environment. However, efforts by environmentalists to encourage consumers to switch to alternatives, like water fountains or reusable bottles, have not been very effective. The U.S. alone uses over 50 million plastic bottles annually, 80% of which end up in landfills.
To try to stop that, Rodrigo García González, Pierre Paslier and Guillaume Couche from the Imperial College London have been working on a revolutionary solution — water wrapped inside an eatable container made mostly from seaweed. All the customer has to do to relieve his/her thirst is pop the entire drop into the mouth.
The inventors, who have been working on the Ooho bubble since 2014, use a simple two-step cooking process called spherification (球化) to create the delicate container. They begin by dipping a frozen ball of water or juice into a chemical solution (溶液). This helps form a layer around the liquid. The ball is then absorbed in a solution made from seaweed extract. This creates a second layer, helping strengthen the structure so that the water or juice does not leak(渗漏). In addition to saving our environment, the biodegradable (可降解的) packaging costs just two cents each, making it cheaper to produce than plastic.
After three years of perfecting the design, the inventors, who recently raised over 1 million USD from a financial activity, are ready to bring the Ooho bubble to local market. However, there are a few challenges that still need to be overcome before the product’s launch. In addition to getting accustomed to the taste of the covering, each eatable container contains just a mouthful of water, requiring consumers to drink multiple bubbles to relieve their thirst. There is also the issue of finding an eco-friendly packaging to transport the bubbles so that they remain clean and do not burst. Hopefully, the inventors will find ways to handle the issues so that we can reduce, or perhaps even remove, plastic bottles.

D. To take a share of drinking water industry.

How To Take The Advice You've Been Given
Taking advice sometimes can be really hard, especially when you're in a tough situation. 36 Here are some of them.
Listen to yourself first. You're the one who has to live with the choices you make, so really take the time to make sure that whatever you're doing feels true to you. For instance, if someone gives you advice that goes against your values like honesty, say no. 37
Choose your advisers wisely. Be very discerning (有眼力的) when you’re choosing who to take advice from. 38 However, just because someone is successful in their field doesn't necessarily mean they'll give you good advice. Never take advice from the wrong person. For instance, you might not take financial advice from someone who doesn't manage money well.
Seek several different opinions. 39 Instead, reach out to several people whose judgment and experience you really trust. That way, you can be sure you're getting a broad enough perspective on the issue. Also, don't just rely on people who think similarly to the way you do. Try to find people with diverse points of view.
40 Take a little bit of time to think over any advice someone offers even if you have to make a quick decision. Carefully consider your options so you can make a thoughtful decision based on your goals. However, do give yourself a deadline so you don't end up delay for too long.
A. Give yourself time to think about the advice you receive.
B. Don't feel like you only have to get advice from one person.
C. It is important to let people know you appreciate their advice.
D. You should listen to the inner voice and tell yourself it's wrong.
E. Therefore, you're prepared to take responsibility for your decision.
F. Good advice always comes from those who are experts on the subject.
G. There are still tips making it easier for you to decide what to do, though.

Having just graduated from high school, I was 18 and living with my parents in Denver, Colorado. That summer I decided to take my most daring trip ever. I wanted to go to Utah to visit a dear friend I'd known for four years. My father had given me a small street motorcycle as a graduation present, and I worked out a plan to ride it to Utah.
I was to get an early start, ride all day, and arrive at my destination (Paradise, Utah) that evening. Arriving in Ogden, Utah in the late afternoon, I looked at my map for another route to save time. A small line on the map indicated an unimproved road heading northeast straight to the little town of Paradise!
Of course I headed for it. The road quickly became a single, dirty lane, winding through fields. As long as it was dry, surely I'd be OK. Suddenly, I lost control of the motorcycle and it fell over. I didn't get hurt because it wasn't going fast, but I was puzzled and couldn't figure out what had happened.
It was dark. While my headlight showed me where the road was, I couldn't tell its condition, only that it was smooth. I started again, and once more fell over after a few feet. I looked around and found myself alone in a high mountain field. For the first time during the trip I started to get worried. A few minutes later I couldn't believe what I saw—a pair of headlights bouncing along the road towards me, coming from the direction I was heading for!
The man driving the small truck stopped and asked if I needed any help. Not the type to bother others with my problems, I said I thought I could get where I was going on my own, and thanked him for the offer.
