Lunar New Year used to be a daylong celebration for us. My parents tried really hard to recreate the season for my sisters and me here in America. On New Year’s day, my family, including all my uncles, aunts, and cousins, dressed in new clothes, gathered at my grandma’s house. Kids were pulled out of school, and adults took the day off. The celebration lasted throughout the day and late into the night, with one tradition following another.
Fast-forward to 2019: My grandma has passed away, the adults are elderly, and the kids have grown up and are living their own life. The Lunar New Year celebration is no longer elaborate as it used to be. As we melt into American culture, the “olden ways”, as we call them, have fallen away. Life seems to have got busier and much more complex, but I often feel something is missing.
For us first-generation kids, it is often easier to let go of the traditions and customs of our parents’. They don’t mean as much to us as they do for them. At the same time, they are still a part of our culture. I realised that the diaspora(流散) of young Asian American in the United Sates is not unique to me. It is an ongoing inner struggle that we all wrestle with. My Asian features and skin colour do not entirely define who I am. I am as much a “hamburger” guy as a “rice” individual. I can’t quite fully claim that I am an American and not fully Asian. There isn’t really a check box that I can mark. I am Chinese-Vietnamese-Asian-American.
I now have two little boys. It saddens me to think they will never be able to experience what my sisters and I did as little kids during this holiday. Recently, for the first time, I’ve hung up Lunar New Year decorations around the house and replaced our Christmas wreath(花环) on the front door with decorative firecrackers. In a way, my sons are forcing me to slow down and explore my heritage.
( )19.What do we know about the author’s family in Paragraph 1
A.They lived a very hard life in America.
B.They respected the old and loved the young.
C.They stuck to the traditions of Lunar New Year.
D.They paid little attention to children’s education.
( )20.What does the underlined word “elaborate” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Carefully prepared and organised. B.Extremely simple and easy.
C.Unbelievable and ridiculous. D.Humorous and appealing.
( )21.Why does the author mention “hamburger” and “rice” in Paragraph 3
A.To suggest various choices. B.To indicate diverse identities.
C.To clarify different customs. D.To compare personal tastes.
( )22.What message does the author seem to convey in the text
A.We should strengthen family bonds.
B.We are what we choose to be.
C.Passing down family traditions matters.
D.Knowing yourself is a lifelong process.

Who first proposed the holiday for workers It’s not entirely clear, but two workers can make a solid claim to the Founder of Labour Day title.
Some records show that in 1882, Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labour, suggested setting aside a day for a “general holiday for the labouring classes”. But many believe that machinist Matthew Maguire, not Peter J. McGuire, founded the holiday.
The first Labour Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5,1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labour Union. The Central Labour Union held its second Labour Day holiday just a year later, on September 5,1883.By 1894,23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28,1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
Many Americans celebrate Labour Day with parades, picnics and parties—festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with a street parade to exhibit “the strength and spirits of the trade and labor organisations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labour Day.
Speeches by important official men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labour Convention of 1909, the Sunday before Labour Day was adopted as Labour Sunday and dedicated to(致力于) the spiritual and educational aspects of the labour movement. American labour has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labour movement has brought us closer to the realisation of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy.
( )23.What can we know from Paragraph 2
A.People’s views about the founder of Labour Day vary.
B.The author considered Matthew Maguire the founder.
C.Peter J. McGuire wanted to set a few days for a holiday.
D.Labour Day was originally set up for American machinists.
( )24.What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us
A.The real meaning of Labour Day.
B.The development of Labour Day.
C.The reason of setting Labour Day.
D.People’s emphasis on Labour Day.
( )25.Which of the following does the author agree with
A.It is known that America develops very fast.
B.The original meaning of Labour Day changes.
C.It is worthwhile to set a day for the labourers.
D.The labour movement makes the life unsteady.
