As my kids and I walked around a community garden the other week, I asked them what veggies they could identify. We were in Alberta, where many plants were still in their early stages of growth — I wasn’t optimistic about what the kids would be able to name by leaves alone. However, they called out, “Tomatoes! Potatoes! Carrots!” Their answers made me even prouder than if they’d just explained some knowledge of physics. All the time we’ve spent in our home garden is actually sinking in.
Although I’ve been gardening for years, this year feels different. Spending time in the garden has helped me with my own well-being at a trying time, and it has given me a new way to connect with my kids when I’m running out of steam.
My garden is wild, full of life, and a bit messy. Honestly, the same goes for my kids — and I don’t expect perfection from them either. Unless you’re relying on your yield for money or food, it’s a good idea to have your expectations for gardening as low as possible. My kids say they “love the garden” but “don’t like gardening” — I think they mean they don’t like the chores. If I have some weeding or potting to do, I’ll also have some entertainment for them, which can be as simple as “find these 10 rocks” or “wet this plot with your water gun”.
Involving the kids in every stage of the process can be powerful and fun, even if what you have are just a few containers on a balcony. “Gardening allows us to spend free, unscheduled outdoor time with our kids,” writes journalist and author Shannon Brescher Shea in her book Growing Sustainable Together. “Let your kids lead the way. Invite them to participate in every step, from planting to harvesting, but don’t force it.”
One of the best things about gardens is the food, but frankly, my kids are not going to be pushing greens into their mouths any time soon. Finding uses for garden goods that go beyond food production can spark interest and supply you with some unexpectedly good results.
4. What can the author infer from her kids’ answers
A. It’s worthwhile to spend time in her garden.
B. It’s great to witness her kids’ academic progress.
C. It’s necessary for kids to know common sense.
D. It’s difficult for kids to learn plants in early stages.
5. What do we know about the author’s garden
A. It is in a complete mess. B. It has a rise in output.
C. It has been abandoned for long. D. It goes as nature takes its course.
6. How does the author attract the kids’ interest in gardening
A. By giving rewards afterwards. B. By giving more encouragement.
C. By adding recreational activities. D. By asking them to have short breaks.
7. What is Shannon’s suggestion on parents’ involving kids in gardening
A. Teaching kids the power and fun of harvesting.
B. Encouraging kids’ active participation.
C. Allowing kids to observe every step carefully.
D. Setting an example for kids in doing gardening.

People’s tendency to follow trends, especially on social media — even when they look silly or take risks doing so — is definitely a common phenomenon. What does psychology say about trend following — and is there a way to break free from the desire to follow the newest craze
According to Psychologist Pamela B.Rutledge, following trends isn’t a sign of character weakness or mental instability. Rather, it is an entirely natural behavior embedded (嵌入) in humanity’s fundamental need to belong to a social group and establish connections with others.
Historically, following trends was crucial for our survival. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that early humans worked together to transport stone tools over long distances about two million years ago in what is now Kenya — cooperation that allowed them to survive in a severe environment. And though following a trend on social media isn’t exactly as important as outrunning a saber-toothed tiger, human evolution (进化) has programmed our brains to be receptive to social signals.
Another contributing factor the social cognition (认知) — the processes that determine what we notice and how we respond to others — largely takes place in the parts of the brain that oversee sight, pattern recognition, decision-making, and similar functions. “Thanks to our humans’ complex cognitive systems, our brains are really good at identifying patterns and stimulating behavior that communicates our social status. As a result, you can use almost anything to signal your membership or association with a social group. Giving off the right social signals lets others know which group you belong to or want to engage with — and those signals are monitored and interpreted by others. Referred to as identity signaling, these behaviors can range from posting a comment online to selecting a brand of clothing,” said Rutledge.
Almost everyone follows trends in social groups, without exception. However, teenagers, and young adults are especially likely to follow trends, including risky ones, due to their heightened desire for acceptance and belonging among peers. Therefore, it’s of great significance to guide them during their journey towards maturity.
8. What does Rutledge think of following trends
A. Changeable. B. Reasonable. C. Odd. D. Risky.
9. Why did early humans prefer to follow trends
A. To remove mental weakness. B. To show their social status.
C. To live through difficulties. D. To expand their population.
10. What is the hidden meaning of identity signaling
A. Good taste in fashion. B. Blind pursuit of novelty.
C. A true reflection of personality. D. A keen thirst for belonging.
11. What will the follow-up paragraph most probably talk about
A. Tips on helping kids embracing trends sensibly. B. Insights into forthcoming trends in the future.
C. Parental guidance in kids’ future jobs. D. Psychology behind trend adoption.
D
Air conditioning use has exploded in the last 30 years. According to U. S. Census data in1993, just about three- quarters of single family homes in the Midwest had air conditioning. In the West and Northeast, it was just about half. Now, all regions are pushing 100 percent air conditioning coverage. In the South, it’s been at about 100 percent since the early 1990s.
As the cost of air conditioning installation has gone down, and temperatures have gone up, Americans have been offered an opportunity for a steady indoor temperature year-round, regardless of the weather outside. This drive for comfort forces us to disconnect from what’s happening all around us. A conditioned climate allows us to completely ignore the changing seasons and our warming planet. Only listening to people who agree with us — or trying to silence those who disagree — creates our own, individually conditioned realities.
New York University professor and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt showed how the comforts of conveniences “atomize” our social structures. Each new technology that makes our lives easier also makes us less reliant on other people. Haidt’s big focus is on smartphones and social media, as explored in his recent book, but our society was cracking off into smaller and smaller pieces long before we had the robots in our pockets.
Cars allowed us to shop in other towns, reducing reliance on local businesses. A television set gave something for people to do in the evenings, reducing the need to hang out with neighbors, and by extension, eroding community structures and institutions (often called “third places”, in contrast to work and home). Air conditioning allowed us to stay inside in the heat, limiting a play-based childhood where kids run around with each other and make their own fun.
What if we all turned off the air conditioning for a bit, opened our windows, and truly experienced life as it was happening, not what we manufactured it to be We might be a little less comfortable, but maybe a little more connected.
12. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs
A. Air conditioning easily shapes our individual personality.
B. Air conditioned houses are more comfortable than others.
C. Air conditioning can reduce our connection with the world.
D. Air conditioning is accessible to every household in the US.
13. Why does the author mention Haidt
A. To promote his recent book. B. To illustrate technological advances.
C. To praise human self- reliance. D. To reveal the harm of air conditioning.
14. What does the word “eroding” underlined in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Constructing. B. Destroying.
C. Avoiding. D. Improving.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A Turn off Air Conditioning for a Bit B. Experience Your Life to the Fullest
C. Keep Away from Air Conditioned Houses D. Never Create Our Own Conditioned Realities

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show ” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two The talent show for the food bank ” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

【答案】Dear fellow students
I’m Li Hua. I feel greatly honored to have an opportunity to deliver this speech themed “Healthy Diet”. We now live in an age where dietary concerns have crept into every aspect of our life. Unhealthy diets, ranging from relying on fast food to skipping meals, can lead to considerable health issues.
To maintain good health, it’s essential to ensure a sufficient intake of vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables in our diet as a means of promoting a wholesome dietary lifestyle. Besides this, establishing consistent eating habits is also of great significance for our health. For instance, having three meals a day at the same time each day can help regulate our body’s digestion.
A healthy diet is the foundation of a healthy life. I do hope you will join me in making healthier choices for a brighter future. Thank you!

【答案】I was completely knocked out by the news. What should I do Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up. Feeling at a loss, I was brainstorming as hard as I could to think of a solution, when a gentle touch on my back brought me back to reality. It was my mum, who looked at me with care and concern. “You have prepared for it enough. You can do it by yourself.” She said after my stumbled explanation. I looked back at her eyes, and a sense of confidence and warmness swelled up in my heart. Yes, I could do it myself.
Finally came the big moment. Looking around the audience, I stepped onto the stage, with butterflies in my stomach. My voice trembled at first, but with the melodies flew around, the nervousness was gone with the wind. Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day. I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care. It turned out to be a good performance, which helped me conquer my fears and turned me into a new person.
