There is a day every year that most people look forward to because of a cake, balloons, presents and sometimes a party. Yes, this is your birthday. A "birthday" is described as the name given to the date of the annual event of a person's birth. It is a global tradition for people to celebrate this specific day.
In the beginning, people did not have birthday celebrations, because people did not keep very good birth records. They weren't even sure what year they were born. And when people started to celebrate the birthday, there was no tradition of bringing gifts, and guests attending the birthday celebrations would bring good wishes for the birthday person. However, if a guest did bring gifts it was considered to be a good sign for the person of honor. Later, flowers became quite popular as birthday gifts.
Nowadays, different cultures have their own birthday celebrations. In Chinese culture, elders and family members gather around the one-year-old child and bring toys such as books, dolls and coins. It is believed that the child's future career will depend on the object that he or she picks. The Chinese consider a child a year old at birth. In Japan, people's 3rd, 5th, and 7th birthdays are the most important, because they will get to participate in the annual "Seven-Five-Three” festival. Participants usually visit shrines (神殿)to show thanks for their health and strength.
Some in Britain still practice an ancient way of celebrating birthdays by placing thimbles (顶针)and coins in the cake. The person who will get the coin will be wealthy and the one who gets the thimble will never marry. Ireland has a funny way of celebrating birthdays. It is believed that it is for good luck that a child is lifted upside down and gets “bumped”(撞击)on the floor! These bumps will depend how old the child is. An extra bump is also added for good luck.

Students from Taizhou Middle School, Jiangsu Province, experience farming during their labor course. As we all know, the life skills like cooking and painting are important and should be taught as part of labor education.
On June 3, 2020, the Ministry of Education ( MOE) gave a document showing the revised curriculum (修改后的方案) for senior high schools across the country. Labor education includes housework, school labor and community voluntary services and so on.
“Labor education must be carried out with the purpose to make the right view of the world, life and values and develop an interest in doing chores,” said Vice-Minister of Education Zheng Fuzhi.
According to China Youth Daily, the labor course will take six credits (学分)—the same as foreign language and physics. Voluntary service, as part of labor education, would take two credits. The MOE also asks schools to make sure 40 hours of voluntary service during the full three school years.
According to Xinhua, adding labor education was out of care that the country’s young people do too little housework and that they think labor jobs aren’t important. Because of a lot of school pressure, schools pay more attention to the course of education, and parents may think that the chores waste their kids’ time.
According to a survey, middle school students in China only spend 12 minutes a day on chores, compared with 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France.
However, doing housework does not distract young people. Instead, they are necessary for developing a strong working spirit, according to Julie Lythcott-Haims, the writer of How to Raise an Adult. “The earlier you started, the better…”, he said.

Animals, including humans, feel sound as well as hear it, and some of the most meaningful communication happens at frequencies (频率) that people can’t hear. Elephants, for example, use these low-frequency sounds to, among other things, find family or a mate across long distances. Whales do it, too.
But you don’t have to weigh a ton to make a sound. In fact, you don’t have to be bigger than a pea. Consider, for example, the tree-hopper, a curious little animal that lives on the stems (茎) of the leaves. University of Missouri biologist Rex Cocroft has spent much of his time listening closely to tree-hoppers with his team.
The team discovers that all the sounds being heard from tree-hoppers are produced by males. They do it by vibrating (振动) their abdomens (腹部) to make a wide variety of strange sounds. There is almost no airborne sound produced with these vibrational sounds. Cocroft explained, “If a tree-hopper were to stand on your finger and produce a sound, you would feel the vibration but hear no sound.”
They showed that some sounds, not surprisingly, seem to be aimed at attracting females. And some are aimed at other males.
Cocroft explained, “When two males meet each other, or when they are mate-searching on a branch, we’re hearing ‘purring, bdddddrrrr…’ sounds that males give.” Normally, a person couldn’t hear any of this, because the sound travels along the stem, inside it. And that’s how other tree-hoppers detect it.
Cocroft said tree-hoppers have very sensitive legs. And they stand around on stems, which are good at spreading vibrations. So they just use what nature gives them to communicate with each other.
“They have so many different forms of social behavior and grouping,” Cocroft explained. “And once there are animals living in groups, then there will be all sorts of interesting possibilities for communication.”
32.What does Cocroft’s research focus on about tree-hoppers
A.Their variety. B.Their communication.
C.Their living areas. D.Their numbers.
33.What can we know about tree-hoppers
A.They sense sounds by legs.
B.They knock the stems to make sounds.
C.Their sounds can be easily heard by humans.
D.Females make sounds to meet each other
34.What does Cocroft say about animals’ living in groups
A.It is key to their survival.
B.It drives an increase in their numbers.
C.It often leads to communication.
D.It contributes much to the division of animal types.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.A Magic Moment in Nature B.A Journey to the Wildlife
C.Learning From Nature D.Communication Sounds Among Animals

Letting Go of What Holds You Back
The truth is, we all only have a limited amount of time and energy each day. 36 Does that sound familiar We’ve all been there — feeling overwhelmed, as if carrying a heavy load on our backs. Whether it’s physical stuff in your living space or metaphorical (比喻的) trash in life, it’s time for a spring cleaning.
37 To do one thing well, you must have the concentration and go all out. Once Warren Buffet famously said,“ Really successful people say no to almost everything.” He accumulated wealth by focusing laser- like on one thing — investing, and excelled in it by declining every other shiny distraction that crossed his path.
Reflecting on our life, we’ve unconsciously collected mental and emotional “junk”. Maybe it’s excessive TV watching, continuous gaming, tiring friendships, aimless social media consumption. Honestly, I’ll bet we could all name at least one TV show we’ve been absorbed in out of boredom instead of doing something productive. So the first step is taking stock of exactly what’s weighing you down each day. Then it’s time to start de-junking, but go slow. 38 Try dumping one thing per week so it’s manageable.
Another sneaky trick is to replace bad habits with good alternatives, like switching from endless browsing on social media to learning a new skill instead. 39
Once the unnecessary weight is lifted off, you will have so much extra mental space and energy. 40 So say bye-bye to all the things holding you back and watch your success skyrocket as a result. Your future self will thank you.
A.Detail the time you spend on activities each week.
B.As a saying goes, jack (千斤顶) of all trades, master of none.
C.Throwing everything out at once will just leave you stressed out.
D.Or put away your phone while working, so you’ re not distracted.
E.When it comes to letting go of trouble causers, you have many alternatives.
F.Suddenly barriers seem not so tough when you’ re not battling ten things at once.
G.If we shoulder more than we can, we’ll end up exhausted and going nowhere.

【答案】17.B 18.C 19.A 20.C
【原文】W: Pleased to be here today. My name’s Joan, and I’d like to share with you something about my French learning. I still remember when I first started to learn the language I didn’t really have a problem with the pronunciation. I just had a hard time memorizing words. But I made a great effort and soon I was scoring ten out of ten in all of the tests. By the time I got to university, I could do some writing and translations without much difficulty, and I actually enjoyed learning the grammar rules. Then as part of my university course I had to go and live in France for a year. As soon as I arrived,I realized I didn’t know how to order the type of coffee I liked, and trying to find somewhere to live or stay was something difficult to deal with. I called people about information in the paper, but I had to keep putting the phone down because I couldn’t understand a word they were saying — they all spoke so quickly! I could see then that there’s no point in just knowing words if you can’t hold a conversation with a native speaker. The ability to speak freely is what helps you get a job, hold a conversation or just buy the things you need.

With the development of the Internet, shopping online has become increasingly common in our life. Shopping online has a lot of advantages, of which the most important is perhaps its convenience. People don’t have to waste a lot of their energy and precious time to go from one shop to another to choose the goods they like. This is especially desirable to the old, the sick and the busy people who cannot go to the shops in person. However, shopping on the Internet also has its disadvantages. Online shopping requires sharing personal and financial information, which can be a concern for privacy and security. Once cheated, you will find that you have nowhere to go to complain.
Therefore, while enjoying the great benefits online shopping offers, we should also be aware of the potential risks and take steps to protect ourselves.
