It was Christmas Eve when my elder sister and I decided to open our presents before our mom got home from work. She usually came home about an hour after we got home from school, which we thought was plenty of time to take a peek at the gifts under the tree.
My elder sister opened present after present while I was ordered to stand guard at the big window in our front room. Finally, when my sister’s curiosity was satisfied, we traded places.
After unwrapping a few presents, I found it faster to open one end of a present and peek inside. “Cool! Mom and Dad got me headphones for my stereo!” I pulled the headphones out of the box and was about to put them on when my sister shouted, “Quick! Wrap it back up! Mom’s coming!”
I put the headphones back hurriedly in the box but my hands were shaking. My heart pounded harder as I tried to get the tape to stick. I had just finished burying the package with my headphones in it when my mother came into the front room. I jumped up and said, “Hi, Mom!” She smiled at me and said “Hi” back, but didn’t appear to suspect anything. My heart began to slow as I took a deep breath.
On Christmas morning, my sister and I smiled and gave award-winning performances when we opened our presents again. “Headphones!” I shouted. “Thanks, it’s just what I wanted.” After everything had been opened, my sister and I looked at each other, and our eyes met. Our secret was safe, but somehow Christmas morning didn’t feel the same.
My sister and I never opened our Christmas presents early again. I don’t know if it was that opening our gifts for the second time just wasn’t as much fun as the first time, or if we came too close to getting caught and didn’t want to think about what our mother would have done to us.
24. What did the author and his sister do before their mother came back
A. They opened Christmas presents in advance.
B. They put Christmas presents under the tree.
C. They bought and hid some Christmas presents.
D. They changed Christmas presents quickly.
25. How did the author feel when his mother was coming
A. Grateful and inspired. B. Cheerful and excited.
C. Nervous and frightened. D. Curious and surprised.
26. Why did that Christmas morning give the author a different feeling
A. His secret was found out.
B. A pleasant surprise was lost.
C. His request wasn’t satisfied.
D. A festival atmosphere was everywhere.
27. What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph
A. He didn’t like the headphones. B. He missed his Christmas present.
C. He wasn’t pleased with his mother. D. He regretted what he had done.

In 2020, Pink launched the World Regret Survey, the largest survey on the topic ever undertaken. With his research team, Pink asked more than 15,000 people in 105 countries, “How often do you look back on your life and wish you had done things differently ” Most of them said regret was at least an occasional part of their life. About 21 percent said they felt regretful all the time. Only one percent said they never felt regretful.
If you are of the “no regrets” school of life, you may think that all the regrets are a recipe for unhappiness. But that isn’t the case. Letting yourself be overwhelmed by regret is indeed bad for you. But going to the other extreme may be even worse. To extinguish your regrets doesn’t free you from shame or sorrow but causes you to make the same mistakes again and again. To truly get over our guilt requires that we put regret in its proper place.
Uncomfortable as it is, regret is an amazing cognitive(认知的) feature. It requires that you go back to a past scene. Imagine that you acted differently to change it, and with that new scene in mind, arrive at a different present — and then, compare that fictional present with the one you are experiencing in reality. Not all regrets are the same, of course. Pink says they come in four basic types, and an instance of regret may involve just one combination.
Many connection regrets overlap with moral regrets, which can come about after you go against your own values. For example, you may pride yourself on being a loving person, and thus regret not living up to this image in the relationship you harmed. Moral regrets can also involve just yourself. Maybe you regret not living up to your promise to your health when you ate a whole pizza or skipped the gym.
If not analyzed and managed, any kind of regret can be harmful to your well-being. Regret is linked to depression and anxiety, and too much regret can negatively affect your immune system. But regret doesn’t have to be put aside and ignored.
28. What could be concluded from Pink’s research
A. Half of the people felt regretful.
B. Most people lived without regrets.
C. None could live a life without regrets.
D. Most of the people had regrets.
29. What does the underlined word “extinguish” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Destroy. B. Admit. C. Treasure. D. Experience.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The harm of moral regrets.
B. The importance of promise.
C. The relationship between regrets and values.
D. The connection between reality and imagination.
31. What might the author continue talking about
A. Types of regrets. B. Causes of regrets.
C. Benefits of experiencing regrets. D. Ways of dealing with regrets.

Do you still remember the scene in the famous movie Titanic, directed by Cameron, where Jack was frozen to death in the icy cold water so that Rose could survive on the floating door alone It broke many people’s hearts.
Two decades later, people are still asking the question, “Wasn’t there enough room on the door for both of them ”
Cameron once responded by saying it wasn’t a question of room, but buoyancy(浮力) — if both of them had tried to stay on the door, he argued, the whole thing would sink.
But several guys from “Mythbusters”, an Australian-American science entertainment television program, decided to test the theory themselves. They discovered that if Rose had taken off her life jacket to the bottom of the door, there would have been enough buoyancy to keep both of them afloat.
When they presented their findings to Cameron, the director insisted that Jack couldn’t be saved. “The answer is very simple,” Cameron said. “Because it says on page 147 of the script that Jack dies.” To Cameron, Jack had to die because he thought it would be best. “It was an artistic choice, the thing was just big enough to hold her, and not big enough to hold him,” Cameron added. “I think it’s all kind of silly, really, that we’re having this discussion 20 years later. But it does show that the film was effective in making Jack so attractive to the audience that it hurts them to see him die. The film is about death and separation; he had to die.”
Since Jack was doomed to die, Cameron said, it could have happened in a variety of different ways. It’s not about the door not being big enough; that’s just a practical method for his death. “Whether it was that, or whether a chimney(烟囱) fell on him, he was going down,” Cameron said. “It’s called art: things happen for artistic reasons, not for physics reasons.”
32. What do we know about the character Jack according to the text
A. He intended to kill himself.
B. He sacrificed himself to save Rose.
C. He didn’t have money to buy tickets.
D. He lacked basic knowledge of physics.
33. According to Cameron, why can’t audience accept Jack’s death
A. They are fragile people. B. They like the movie.
C. They love the character Jack. D. They are eager for truth.
34. Why was a chimney mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To introduce the structure of the ship.
B. To show the original plan of the movie.
C. To present the missing part of the movie.
D. To explain the unchangeable fate of Jack.
35. What can be the best title for this text
A. Jack in Titanic Had to Die B. Big Enough for Both
C. Cameron Is Wrong D. Jack Could Survive

How to Respond When Someone Judges You
Dealing with judgment from other people can be tough, especially when it’s coming from a friend, family member, or colleague. Judgmental people are unavoidable, but you can easily deal with their criticism using positivity and compassion.
Rid yourself of the judgment. Remember that a judgmental person’s words are a reflection of their own beliefs — and not yours. Critical people criticize themselves more than anyone else. 36 .
Be sympathetic. Practice sympathy to understand the source of this person’s judgment. It could be that they were judged by parents, family, or friends, in which case this person’s critical attitude would be something they learned (and not necessarily intentional). While that doesn’t excuse their behavior, having sympathy can inform your response. Say things like “ 37 ,” or “I see where you’re coming from, but…” when you respond to someone’s judgment.
Ask for clarification(澄清). 38 . Ask this person to explain what they said, and find out their motivation for saying it. You could ask then, “What are you trying to say If you have constructive criticism, I’m open to hearing it.” That way, you’re giving the other person a gentle reminder to phrase their words constructively.
39 . Be polite but firm when you call out judgmental people. If somebody crosses a line and makes you feel criticized, tell them how you feel. If someone is giving you criticism you didn’t ask for, you could say, “ 40 , and I have a plan that works for me.”
A. Stop talking like this B. Set boundaries in the conversation C. I understand why you feel that way D. I feel like I need to deal with this in my way E. I know you want to talk but this is a sensitive subject for me F. Judgmental people may not know they’re being rude or unreasonable G. So the judgment they pass isn’t actually about you, though it can feel personal

I grew up in a small town where the primary school was ten minutes’ walk from my home. So I would rush back home for lunch.
One lunchtime when I was in the fourth grade will always be kept in my mind. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play. However, no matter how smoothly I read lines at home, the moment I stepped onstage, every word escaped me. Finally, my teacher took me aside, explaining in a kind voice, “I had written the narrator’s(旁白) part in the play. Are you willing to change roles ” I had to hold back tears as I nodded, watching helplessly my part go to another girl.
I felt too ashamed to tell my mother what happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed I was upset, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day with the rose vine turning green. Under the huge tree, we could see bunches of yellow dandelions(蒲公英) in the grass as if a painter had touched our landscape with dabs of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. “I think I’m going to clear all the weeds(草),” she said, pulling it out by its roots. “You see, we’ll have only beautiful roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions.” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it ” She asked thoughtfully. I gave her an approving nod, secretly pleased that the dandelions could survive my mom’s weeding plan. “And that is true of people too,” she continued. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.” Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I couldn’t help breaking into tears.

This festival is of great significance. It not only strengthens family bonds but also reflects harmony between humans and nature. It’s a time for reflection, gratitude, and looking forward to a prosperous new year.
Hope you can experience it someday!

I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly. “You will be a beautiful narrator,” she encouraged, “The narrator’s part is as important as the part of a princess.” Wearing a shining smile, my beloved mother comforted me as always she did. Her words reminded me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. Over the next weeks, with her constant encouragement, I learned to take pride in the role. Lunchtimes were spent reading over my lines painstakingly and talking about what I would wear.
Finally came the big day. Waiting backstage, I suddenly felt nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. Looking at it, I knew my mother was out there for me, which calmed me down and brought me power. My performance turned out to be a great success. And I firmly believed the princess couldn’t have won such thunderous applause without my beautiful narration. Since then, the dandelion, a gift from my mother, has always inspired me to be a confident girl.
