Fang Li, a 70-year-old director and producer, hit the headline with The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru.
Late in September 1942, the Japanese military transported over 1,800 British prisoners of war from Hong Kong to Japan by ship. In the waters off Dongji Island, it was torpedoed (被鱼雷击中) by a US submarine. Fishermen from Zhoushan risked their lives to save 384 POWs. Fang was shocked. “How had we in China never heard of the Lisbon Maru We know of the Titanic, but no one here ever mentioned the Lisbon Maru.” This mystery aroused Fang's curiosity, leading him to begin the search for the ship in 2016. During the journey, Fang learned of 94-year-old Lin Agen, the sole surviving fisherman to have participated in the rescue, and of a 98-year-old British soldier, Dennis Morley, who survived the ordeal. “It felt like a race against time. We had to document their stories before it was too late,” Fang says.
Fang launched a search for more survivors and their families. He placed ads in British newspapers like The Sunday Times and The Guardian. “People thought I was crazy — “Who even reads newspapers anymore they said. But I knew that the elderly, like myself, still do,” Fang says. The campaign was a success, leading to BBC Radio 4 inviting him on a show, which in turn connected him with 380 POW families.
On Aug 23, The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru premiered on Dongji Island, where the tragedy occurred. Fang wrote on his WeChat moments:“We finally showed the documentary on Dongji Island, the very place where our ancestors performed their heroic acts 82 years ago. Scientists have made an amazing discovery deep underground in South Africa. They found tiny living creatures called microbes in a rock estimating to be 2 billion years old! This rock was found almost 50 feet below the surface in a special place called the Bushveld Igneous Complex. This finding is very exciting because it shows the oldest known living microbes found in such extreme conditions, much older than any other microbes found before.
The leader of the research team, Yohey Suzuki, said, “We didn't know if 2-billion-year-old rocks were habitable. Until now, the oldest geological layer in which living microorganisms had been found was a 100-million-year-old deposit beneath the ocean floor, so this is a very exciting discovery.”
The rock sample was about 1 foot long and came from an area known for having a lot of valuable minerals. This area was formed when hot magma (岩浆) cooled down slowly underground. Because the rocks have stayed mostly the same for billions of years, they created safe little spaces, or cracks, where microbes could live and thrive.
To make sure that the microbes they found were really from the old rock and not just something that got mixed in later, the scientists used some special tools to study them. They used three different methods called electron microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy to look closely at the microbes’ DNA and proteins, and were able to show that the microbes were alive and that they had lived in that rock for a very long time.
Finding these ancient microbes helps scientists understand how life can exist even in extreme conditions. The researchers hope that by studying these ancient microbes, they can learn more about how life began on Earth and how it evolved over time. They are also curious to see if this can help them find signs of life on other planets, like Mars.

Aspects of your personality can be revealed in a heartbeat, literally, a new study from Germany suggests. The study identified heartbeat “signatures”— wave patterns in the heart's electrical activity —that were linked with personality traits.
People with certain heartbeat signatures scored higher on tests of neuroticism (神经过敏) — meaning these individuals tend to experience more negative emotions, such as anxiety and a depressed mood, and fewer positive emotions, including happiness and cheerfulness.
The study involved 425 university students ages 18 to 33. The students completed personality tests, and had their heart electrical activity measured using electrocardiography (心电图). “With this method, we have found something that is perhaps more accurate, and more relatable, than many other measures of personality,” said study researcher Stefan Koelsch, a professor of biological psychology at the Freie University Berlin.
The results suggest such heartbeat signatures may provide a more objective way to measure personality than current methods, the researchers say. Personality is commonly assessed using questionnaires, but these may suffer from bias — people may choose responses that they think are more acceptable for their gender, or they may misunderstand their own traits.
Researchers may also be able to identify heartbeat signatures that are characteristic of certain emotional disorders, such as depression, or of cardiovascular diseases, Koelsch said. Such signatures could one day help diagnose these disorders, or identify people at risk for them, he said.
Previously, Koelsch and colleagues found a link between certain heart electrical activity patterns and people with “cold” personalities, who tend not to show emotion. In the new study, similar patterns were seen among those with high scores in neuroticism and low scores in positive emotion, like compassion and empathy.
Although Koelsch suspects that this type of electrical pattern is not particularly healthy, future research is needed to confirm this. Eventually, Koelsch hopes to be able to see whether certain interventions, such as listening to music or watching films, change emotional states and the heart's electrical activity, he said.

Scientists have made an amazing discovery deep underground in South Africa. They found tiny living creatures called microbes in a rock estimating to be 2 billion years old! This rock was found almost 50 feet below the surface in a special place called the Bushveld Igneous Complex. This finding is very exciting because it shows the oldest known living microbes found in such extreme conditions, much older than any other microbes found before.
The leader of the research team, Yohey Suzuki, said, “We didn't know if 2-billion-year-old rocks were habitable. Until now, the oldest geological layer in which living microorganisms had been found was a 100-million-year-old deposit beneath the ocean floor, so this is a very exciting discovery.”
The rock sample was about 1 foot long and came from an area known for having a lot of valuable minerals. This area was formed when hot magma (岩浆) cooled down slowly underground. Because the rocks have stayed mostly the same for billions of years, they created safe little spaces, or cracks, where microbes could live and thrive.
To make sure that the microbes they found were really from the old rock and not just something that got mixed in later, the scientists used some special tools to study them. They used three different methods called electron microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy to look closely at the microbes’ DNA and proteins, and were able to show that the microbes were alive and that they had lived in that rock for a very long time.
Finding these ancient microbes helps scientists understand how life can exist even in extreme conditions. The researchers hope that by studying these ancient microbes, they can learn more about how life began on Earth and how it evolved over time. They are also curious to see if this can help them find signs of life on other planets, like Mars.

Aspects of your personality can be revealed in a heartbeat, literally, a new study from Germany suggests. The study identified heartbeat “signatures”— wave patterns in the heart's electrical activity —that were linked with personality traits.
People with certain heartbeat signatures scored higher on tests of neuroticism (神经过敏) — meaning these individuals tend to experience more negative emotions, such as anxiety and a depressed mood, and fewer positive emotions, including happiness and cheerfulness.
The study involved 425 university students ages 18 to 33. The students completed personality tests, and had their heart electrical activity measured using electrocardiography (心电图). “With this method, we have found something that is perhaps more accurate, and more relatable, than many other measures of personality,” said study researcher Stefan Koelsch, a professor of biological psychology at the Freie University Berlin.
The results suggest such heartbeat signatures may provide a more objective way to measure personality than current methods, the researchers say. Personality is commonly assessed using questionnaires, but these may suffer from bias — people may choose responses that they think are more acceptable for their gender, or they may misunderstand their own traits.
Researchers may also be able to identify heartbeat signatures that are characteristic of certain emotional disorders, such as depression, or of cardiovascular diseases, Koelsch said. Such signatures could one day help diagnose these disorders, or identify people at risk for them, he said.
Previously, Koelsch and colleagues found a link between certain heart electrical activity patterns and people with “cold” personalities, who tend not to show emotion. In the new study, similar patterns were seen among those with high scores in neuroticism and low scores in positive emotion, like compassion and empathy.
Although Koelsch suspects that this type of electrical pattern is not particularly healthy, future research is needed to confirm this. Eventually, Koelsch hopes to be able to see whether certain interventions, such as listening to music or watching films, change emotional states and the heart's electrical activity, he said.
