In the winter of 1910, Dr. Wu Lien-Teh stepped off a train in the northern Chinese city of Harbin. He was there to solve a medical mystery, at great personal risk. Over the past few months, an unknown disease had swept along the railways of northeast China, killing 99.9% of its victims. The Qing Imperial court had sent the Cambridge-educated Dr. Wu north to stop the epidemic.
When Dr Wu arrived in Harbin on Christmas Eve, 1910, he carried little in the way of medical instruments and had only one assistant. One of Wu’s first acts upon arrival was to set up special quarantine(隔离) units and to order lockdowns to stop infected persons from traveling and spreading the disease. He had teams check households for possible cases, and even managed to convince authorities to completely close the railways in the early weeks of 1911. Of particular concern was the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday, which had become a great annual migration of people traveling across the country to see their families.
Thanks to Dr. Wu’s efforts, the number of plague victims began to die down, and by March 1, 1911, the epidemic was fully contained. The pneumonic (肺炎的) plague outbreak of 1910-1911 lasted nearly four months, affected five provinces and six major cities, and accounted for over 60,000 deaths. It is clear that without the brave and decisive actions taken by Dr. Wu, it could have been much worse. Had the epidemic gone unchecked, allowing holiday rail passengers to spread the disease to the rest of China could have meant a catastrophic loss of life and possibly a global health crisis.
In April 1911, Dr. Wu chaired an International Plague Conference in Shenyang, attended by scientists from 11 counties including the United States, Great Britain, Russia, Japan and France. They praised Dr. Wu for his handling of the 1910-1911 outbreak. For a time, Dr. Wu was the world’s most famous plague fighter, a title be defended in a malaria epidemic in China in 1919, and a return of plague in 1921.
24. What was Dr Wu’s mission in 1910
A. To risk personal life.
B. To investigate the victims.
C. To spread medical knowledge.
D. To end an epidemic.
25. Which of Dr Wu’s acts stopped the disease from spreading nationwide
A. Setting up quarantine units across the country.
B. Convincing authorities to close the railways.
C. Checking households with his team for possible cases.
D. Curing all infected persons with his knowledge.
26. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. The disease worsened after Mach 1, 1911.
B. 60,000 would have died without Dr Wu’s efforts.
C. A global health crisis followed the 1910-1911 outbreak.
D. The plague broke out again about 10 years later.
27. What can be the best title of the text
A. A Plague Outbreak
B. A National Health Crisis

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, 33 percent of coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are in danger. One of the victims is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the world’s largest coral reef system.
A team of British and Australian scientists banded and came up with a solution to revive one of the world’s seven natural wonders. They used underwater loudspeakers to attract fishes to the dead coral reefs to help them restore. The groundbreaking process is known as “acoustic (声音的) enrichment”.
Loudspeakers are placed on patches of dead corals in the Great Barrier Reef. After careful observation, researchers discovered a favorable result — nearly twice as many fish arrived — and stayed, as compared to parts where there was no sound from speakers.
“Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places — the crackle of snapping shrimp and the whoop of fish combine to form a biological soundscape. Young fish home in on these sounds when they’re looking for a place to settle.” said Professor Steve Simpson at the University of Exeter.
Reefs become quiet when they are degraded(退化), as the shrimps and fish disappear. “By using loudspeakers to restore this lost soundscape, we can attract young fish back again,” Simpson added.“Fish are crucial for coral reefs to function as healthy ecosystems … Boosting fish populations in this way could help kick-start natural recovery processes, counteracting(抵消) the damage we’re seeing on many coral reefs around the world.” he said.
Despite this groundbreaking discovery, we still have our work cut out for the preservation of coral reefs. The average water temperatures are rising, and problems such as overfishing and pollution are still among the pressing issues at hand. Also, further research is still needed to understand how loudspeakers influence the behavior of aquatic(水中) creatures fully.
Nevertheless, hope is still visible for the degraded coral reefs. The authors of the acoustic enrichment study remain to be optimistic in the power of music and sound to restore the reef’s abundant marine population.
28. What is the function of “acoustic enrichment” according to the text
A. By attracting young fishes.
B. By making degraded reefs noisier.
C. By scaring the enemy of fishes.
D. By making fishes multiply faster.
29. What does Prof Simpson think of bringing fish back
A. It can benefit other lives in the ocean.
B. It can make the ocean noisier and cleaner.
C. It can help rebuild the coral reefs’ecosystem.
D. It can build up the food chains of the ocean.
30. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. The research has achieved a complete success.
B. It is tough to restore the damaged coral reefs.
C. Global warming is the biggest reason for reef dying.
D. Music and sound benefit all endangered animals.

While Romano’s classmates were beginning their college life, the 19-year-old Croatian young man had different dreams. In Croatia, taking a gap year is not as common as in other countries, but Romano decided to take a break for a year or two after high school and try volunteering in Africa.
Upon arrival in Arusha, Tanzania, Romano found a volunteering project through an organization. Now he helps poor children and teaches them English and math. These children are not abandoned. They come from low-income families and any help is welcome. There is no soap or running water in the school, and to learn English, the children depend on volunteers because there are not enough qualified teachers.
“They don’t have much, they are poor, but honest and happy, because they are not aware that there may be something better out there for them. As I was lecturing, I saw the materials they used for learning: worn-out pencils, one eraser for 20 children, torn and printed notebooks, and not to mention clothes and shoes. I will only tell you that uniforms are worn to conceal(掩饰)their clothing and thus to mask material inequality,” says Romano, who was therefore encouraged to launch a charity action to collect donations for children’s necessities.
Romano believes that every child has the right to the basics, including education. It is for this reason that he wants to help these little ones. “Now I realize how privileged I am in life just because I was born on another continent. I learned to appreciate more what I have and manage without the basics. As a result, I met a different culture, tested my limits and looked at things from a different perspective — a gratitude perspective,” concludes Romano, hoping that little by little, both he and other volunteers will contribute to positive change through their work.
32. Why did Romano go to Arusha
A. To prepare for his college life.
B. To earn money in a part-time job.
C. To help children there as a volunteer.
D. To promote an educational program.
33. What do we know about the children that Romano teaches
A. They are too poor to be happy.
B. They all have an incomplete family.
C. They have enough local English teachers.
D. They hardly know about the world outside.
34. What does the underlined word “mask” mean in paragraph 3
A. Create. B. Reduce. C. Hide. D. Remove.
35. What did Romano learn from his experience
A. All children should have access to education.
B. All children should try their best to go to colleges.
C. He should work hard in college to be more helpful.
D. He should treasure his life more and feel more grateful.

How to deal with post-vacation blues
Dreaming at your desk about your recent vacation Having trouble concentrating Feeling depressed and wishing you were anywhere but at work You are not alone. This worry about the first day back to work is perfectly normal according to Dr. Angelos Halaris, a professor of psychology at Loyola University in Illinois. It's not just adults, either. A 2017 study found adolescent depression, anxiety and feelings about everyday troubles appeared to be tied to the end and beginning of school-vacation cycles. ___36___
___37___ Experts say having something to look forward to can ease the bite of the back to work blues. For instance, a half-day break to the suburbs of your city.
Ease back into work. “Don’t jump into the cold water, you’ll have a heart attack. Ease your way back into your routine,” Halaris said. Set small goals to feel a sense of accomplishment. _____38_____ If you’re always stuck at your desk, set a timer and take a quick walk or try to fit in a workout.
Don’t live in the past. Know that something you enjoyed has come to an end, but make peace with it and know it will come back again. ___39___ “Self-talk and being optimistic are important,” Halaris said. Look at kitten pictures online if you need a little lift. Take advantage of the break in your routine and start new office habits. Something small like getting up to walk away from your desk once an hour helps.
Do connect. People who are blue tend toward withdrawal. “Push yourself to communicate even if you don’t feel like it,” Halaris said. ___40___

B. Resist feeling sorry for yourself.
C. Another study also confirms this finding.

She wanted badly to tell Ashley that she didn’t smell very good. But how could she do that without hurting Ashley’s feelings Instead, she gathered the remains of her lunch to throw into the trash, thankful for the excuse to get some fresh air. She looked back to see Ashley eating quietly. Ashley’s hair was tangled(乱糟糟的), and her clothes were dirty. Ariana forced herself to go back to the table and take her seat, vowing(发誓)that she would not sit with Ashley the next day.
When Ariana got home from school, she complained to her mom, “There’s a girl named Ashley who likes to sit next to me in school, but she smells bad.”
“She’s probably having a tough day,” said her mother.
“No, it’s not just one day. She smells bad a lot,” Ariana explained. “Nobody else likes to sit next to her, either.”
“I don’t think you understand Ashley’s situation, so let me ask you this...” Her mother’s tone was serious. “Who makes sure that your hair is combed every morning so you’ll look nice when you go to school ”
“You do,” answered Ariana.
“Who makes sure you’re bathed and cleaned every day And your clothes are washed and neatly ironed ”
“You and Daddy,” Ariana said again.
“Do you live in a nice home Do you have enough to eat ”
Ariana nodded, beginning to feel guilty. She was starting to understand now. Ashley couldn’t help her situation because she was only seven years old—the same age as Ariana. Grown-ups are supposed to take care of kids.

“Not all children live in the best situation,” her mother said. “The best thing you can do for Ashley is to treat her with kindness and sympathy.”

My parents always tell me that “Honesty is like gold.” And it is deeply rooted at the bottom of my heart. Consequently, I seldom tell lies and even I do, they are just white lies. It’s a shame to lie to others. Gradually, I became a reliable person, for many people are willing to trust me and I gained some true friends,
What do you think about my family virtue I can’t wait to talk it over with you.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Ariana bit her bottom lip. Sadness for Ashley filled her heart. She vowed that from now on she would be the best friend that she could be to Ashley. At school, Ariana voluntarily sat next to Ashley. She partnered with Ashley to help with her schoolwork. On the days that Ashley smelled bad, she moved away a little or politely asked Ashley for a little room. She was always careful not to hurt Ashley’s feelings.
Paragraph 2:
At the end of the school year, the second grade prepared to go on a field trip to the zoo. The day before the trip, the teacher announced that the class needed to bring lunch from home. Ashley was absent, and Ariana worried that her friend would not have lunch because Ashley always ate the school lunch. Therefore, the next day, Ariana asked her mom to make an extra lunch for Ashley — just in case. When Ariana got to school, she discovered that she had been right. Ashley had not brought any lunch for the field trip. When Ariana gave the lunch to Ashley, she saw tears well up in Ashley’s eyes.
