My wife and I have ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )always been friendly with the clerks at the local convenience store. I don’t think many people appreciate what a difficult job these folks have. They work for a little over minimum wage and I often wonder how they make ends meet.
One of the clerks ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), Charlie, was always wearing his glasses but he didn’t one day. I asked him about it and he said they’d been out of order and that he couldn’t afford a new pair. His family needed money. It was obvious that he was having a difficult time.
We wanted to help him, so we turned to our own eye doctor for assistance with a plan. We had his secretary contact him, asking him to come in for an eye exam for free. We told the doctor to let him order whatever glasses he wanted and that we would pay for them. Although Charlie questioned what was going on, the doctor just told him that someone had offered the money for his new glasses. When we went in to pay the bill, the doctor told us he was so touched by our idea that he waived the exam fee and only charged us for half the price of the glasses!

A report brought back by most visitors to the US is how friendly, polite, and helpful most Americans were to them. To be fair, this observation is also frequently made of Canada and Canadians, and should best be considered North American. There are, of course, exceptions. Small-minded officials, rude waiters, and ill-mannered taxi drivers are hardly unknown in the US. Yet American’s friendliness and helpfulness is an observation made so frequently that it deserves comment.
For a long period of t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ime and in many parts of the country, a traveler was a welcome break in an otherwise dull existence. Dullness and loneliness were common problems of the families who generally lived distant from one another. Strangers and travelers were welcome sources of distraction, and brought news of the outside world.
The tough realitie ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s of the border also shaped this tradition of hospitality. Someone traveling alone, if hungry, injured, or ill, often had nowhere to turn except to the nearest settler agent. It was not a matter of choice for the traveler or only a charitable impulse (冲动) on the part of the settlers. It reflected the hardship of daily life: if you didn't take in the stranger and take care of him, there was no one else who would. And someday, remember, you might be in the same situation.
Today there are many charitable organizations which specialize in helping the exhausted traveler. Yet, the old tradition of hospitality to strangers is still very strong in the US, especially in the smaller cities and towns away from the busy tourist routes. "I was just traveling through, got talking with this American, and pretty soon he invited me home for dinner, amazing." Such observations reported by visitors to the US are not uncommon, but are not always understood properly. The casual friendliness of many Americans should be understood neither as superficial(表面的)nor as artificial(虚伪的), but as the result of a historically developed cultural tradition.
As is true of any d ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eveloped society, in America a complex set of cultural signals and customs is the basis of all social inter-relationships. And, of course, speaking a language does not necessarily mean that someone understands social and cultural patterns. Visitors who fail to "translate" cultural meanings properly often draw wrong conclusions. For example when an American uses the word "friend", the cultural meanings of the word may be quite different from those it has in the visitor's language and culture. It takes more than a brief encounter on a bus to tell polite customs from individual interest. Yet, being friendly is a virtue (美德) that many Americans value highly and expect from both neighbors and strangers.
29. In the eyes of visitors from the outside world, ________.
A. rude taxi drivers are hardly seen in the US
B. small-minded officials deserve a serious comment
C. Canadians are not so friendly as their neighbors
D. most Americans are ready to offer help
30. We can know from the last paragraph that _______.
A. culture has an influence over social inter-relationship
B. polite customs and individual interest are inter-related
C. various virtues shows themselves only among friends
D. social inter-rela ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tionships equal the complex set of cultural customs
31. Families who ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )lived far from one another used to entertain strangers _______.
A. to improve thei ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r hard life B. in view of their long-distance travel
C. to add some tast ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e to their own daily life D. out of a charitable impulse
32. The tradition of hospitality to strangers _______.
A. tends to be superficial and artificial
B. is generall ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )y well kept up in the United States
C. is always understood properly
D. has something to do with the busy tourist route

We have a crisis on our hands. You mean global warming The world economy No, the decline of reading. People are just not doing it anymore, especially the young. Who's responsible Actually, it's more like, What is responsible The Internet, of course, and everything that comes with it ─Facebook, Twitter. You can write your own list.
There's been ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )a warning about the imminent death of literate civilization for a long time. In the 20th century, first it was the movies, then radio, then television that seemed to spell doom for the written world. None did. Reading survived; in fact it not only survived, it has flourished. The world is more literate than ever before ─ there are more and more readers, and more and more books.
The fact that we ofte ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n get our reading material online today is not something we should worry over. The electronic and digital revolution of the last two decades has arguably shown the way forward for reading and for writing. Take the arrival of e-book readers as an example. Devices like Kindle make reading more convenient and are a lot more environmentally friendly than the traditional paper book.
As technology makes ne ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )w ways of writing possible, new ways of reading are possible. Interconnectivity allows for the possibility of a reading experience that was barely imaginable before. Where traditional books had to make do with photographs and illustrations, an e-book can provide readers with an unlimited number of links: to texts, pictures, and videos. In the future, the way people write novels, history, and philosophy will resemble nothing seen in the past.
On the other hand, the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )re is the danger of trivialization. One Twitter group is offering its followers single-sentence-long “digests” of the great novels. War and Peace in a sentence You must be joking. We should fear the fragmentation of reading. There is the danger that the high-speed connectivity of the Internet will reduce our attention span ─ that we will be incapable of reading anything of length or which requires deep concentration.
In such a fast-changing world, in which reality seems to be remade each day, we need the ability to focus and understand what is happening to us. This has always been the function of literature and we should be careful not to let it disappear. Our society needs to be able to imagine the possibility of someone utterly in tune with modern technology but also able to make sense of a dynamic, confusing world.
In the 15th ce ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ntury, Johannes Guttenberg's invention of the printing press in Europe had a huge impact on civilization. Once upon a time the physical book was a challenging thing. We should remember this before we assume that technology is out to destroy traditional culture.
33. The followin ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )g are all cited as advantages of e-books EXCEPT ______.
A. multimodal content B. environmental friendliness
C. convenience for readers D. imaginative design
34. According to the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )passage, people need knowledge of modern technology and ______ to survive in the fast-changing society.
A. good judgment B. high sensitivity
C. good imagination D. the ability to focus
35. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Technology pushes the way forward for reading and writing.
B. Interconnectivity is a feature of new reading experience.
C. Technology is an ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) opportunity and a challenge for traditional reading.
D. Technology offers a greater variety of reading practice.

Four Ways to Be a Great Roommate

Communication is ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. ◇Ask before you take.
This applies to f ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ood, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. 39
◇Clean up after yourself.
This should do wit ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hout saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I've come across in college are messy. 40 But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.
A. So you need to think twice before you help your roommates out.
B. This creates nothing but awkward. situations and unhappiness.
C. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.
D. You don't have all the time to clean your room and keep it organized.
E. It all starts wi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )th you to have a good relationship with your roommate.
F. Sometime ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.
G. Remember, yo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )u're trying to make a new friend, not to scare your roommate
