Passage 5
Poem A:I shot an arrow into the air, It fell to earth I knew not where; For so swiftly it flew the sight Could not follow it in its flight. I breathed a song into the air, It fell to earth I knew not where; For who has the sight so keen and strong, That can follow the flight of a song Long, long afterwards, in an oak, I found the arrow, still unbroke; And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend. Poem B:I love three things in this world, The sun, the moon and you. The sun for the day, the moon for the night, and you forever. For the world you are somebody, But for somebody you are the world. I drop a tear in the ocean And the day you find it is the day I will stop loving you! People laugh and people cry, Some say hi while some bye, Some give up and some always try, Others may forget you but never will I.
Poem C (excerpt):Two roads diverged in a yellow wood And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should even come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. Poem D:I don’t know what your dream is. I don’t care how disappointing it might have been, As you’ve been working toward that dream. Some of you already know that is hard. It’s not easy. In the process of working on your dreams, You’re going to incur a lot of disappointment, a lot of failure, a lot of pain. For those of you that never experience some hardships, Don’t give up on your dream. There are right times on the way to have come. But they have not come to be seen, they have come to be past.
1. What does “a tear in the ocean” in Poem B imply
A.I feel sad for your love. B.You mean everything to me.
C.I won’t stop loving you all my life. D.My love for you is as wide as the ocean.
2. Which poem is a suitable choice to encourage a frustrated friend

3. Which of the following themes is NOT covered in the four poems

Passage 7
(2024高二下·湖南娄底·学业考试)The campaign to reduce food waste is in its third week, and we’re already seeing some great results. We’d like every student and teacher to join in the campaign, so if you haven’t started yet, read our blog and join in!
Stop wasting food at school.
“The children are making a big effort to think in a sensible way about the food they put on their plates. We now have about 15% less waste and we think this percentage grows as more children join in the campaign,” school lunch director Marge Kaplan said. The school canteen now offers two portion (份) sizes for all main meals: small and large. This week they’ll replace single bread rolls with slices of bread. You can take as many slices as you want, but one at a time.
Latest news!
From next week you’ll be able to put any waste from fresh fruit and vegetables into the special green bin at the back of the canteen. Miss Norris, the school gardener, will empty the bin each day into a giant compost (堆肥) container in the school’s vegetable garden. That can be used to improve the quality of soils.
Stop wasting food at home.
Every year, we waste about a third of our food. In the UK, more than 97% of food waste ends up in a landfill (废物填埋) site. That’s a lot! Come to a special meeting with supermarket owner Carlos Rodriguez to learn how we can save food and money at home!
Campaign meeting!
When: Friday 12 May, 5-6 p. m.

(23-24高二下·全国·课后作业)More excited than ever, Benjamin Giroux, a 10-year- old boy with autism (自闭症), came home from school on April 7. To celebrate National Poetry Month, his fifth-grade teacher asked her students to write a poem about themselves and every sentence should begin with an “I”.
Benjamin couldn’t wait to start writing his poem, so he sat down and didn’t look up until he finished it. He showed the poem to his parents, who immediately choked up.
“I am odd (奇怪的). I am new. ” Benjamin wrote in the poem. “I wonder if you are too. I hear voices in the air. I see you don’t and that’s not fair. I feel like a boy in outer space. I touch the stars and feel out of place.”
“At first, we feel hurt that he feels lonely, misunderstood and odd at school,” Mr Giroux said. “As the poem goes on, we realize that he understands that he’s odd and that so is everyone else in their own way. This is what Benjamin wants everyone to know.”
Benjamin was supposed to read his poem aloud to the class the following day, but upon waking up that morning, he refused to go to school and stayed at home. He didn’t think his poem was any good, so his dad posted it on the Internet in the hope of getting some encouraging comments from families and friends. Passage 11
(22-23高二下·河北石家庄·期末)Writing poetry can seem frightening. However, with the right inspiration (灵感) and approach, you can write a poem that you can be proud to share with others in class or with your friends.
A poem might start as a piece of a verse, a line or two that seems to come out of no-where, or an image you cannot get out of your head. You can find inspiration for your poem by doing writing exercises and using the world around you. Once you have inspiration, you can then shape your thoughts into a poem.
You may also be inspired by going for a walk in your neighborhood or to your favorite spot in the city. You may observe people on a park bench or in a public square and use moments from your observations as the inspiration for a poem. You could try writing a poem about a person who is important to you in your life, such as your mother or your best friend. You could use the person as inspiration for your poem.
You can start your poem by focusing on a specific (特定的) theme or idea that you find attractive or interesting. Picking a specific theme or idea to focus on in the poem can give your poem a clear goal or point. This can make it easier for you to limit what images and descriptions you are going to use in your poem. For example, you may decide to write a poem around the theme of “love and friendship”. You may then think about specific moments in your life when you experienced love and friendship as well as how you would characterize love and friendship based on your relationships with others.
There are many different poetic forms that you can use, from free verse to sonnet to rhyming couplet. You may go for a poetic form that you find easy to use, such as free verse, or a form that you find more challenging, such as sonnet. Choose one poetic form and stick to that structures so your poem feels cohesive (连贯的) to your readers.
1. When it comes to poem writing, both Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3 show the importance of __________.
A.looking for inspiration around us B.having a gift for poem writing
C.knowing the structures of poems D.being supported by people around us
2. What does the example of writing a poem around the theme of “love and friendship” show
A.Inspiration is everywhere around us.
B.We can be encouraged by love and friendship.
C.Picking a specific theme or idea is important.
D.We should write about things were familiar with.
3. Who would most probably try writing a sonnet
A.Someone who wants to feel cohesive to his/her readers.
B.Someone who wants to try a difficult form of poetry.
C.Someone who tries to write a poem the first time.
D.Someone who dislikes the structure of poems.
4. What does this passage mainly talk about
A.Some forms of poems.
B.Some tips to write poems.
C.The author’s experience of writing poems.
D.Some tips to overcome the fear of writing poems.
Passage 12
(23-24高二下·陕西咸阳·阶段练习)What’s the effect of poetry on our brain Scientists have been investigating the neuronal (神经元的) connections and brain circuits that can work in the reading of poetry for some time. And, even though the research has only just begun, the results are already fascinating.
Poetry has the oldest recorded texts in literature. Although it’s impossible to say exactly when it began to be used in the oral tradition, we dare to say that it’s accompanied humanity forever. This gives us an idea of the impact that poetic language can have on our emotional and cognitive state. The emotional response to literature in general shares areas of activation with music. However, more areas of the right hemisphere (半球) seem to be related to poetry. The researchers measured the goosebumps resulting from the tingling (强烈感受) sensation in reading poetry. This type of sensation has also been proven to result from music. However, the tingling sensations produced by poetry activate different areas of the brain compared to those activated by music.
Dr. Eugen Wassiliwizky’s team collected data on behavioral responses in people reading or listening to poetry. They proved that poetry is capable of causing emotional responses and rich emotional experiences. In addition, a poem expresses the poet’s ideas. From a psychological view, poetry is a game of language that manages to group words in a surprising way. We could compare this with how a chef combines ingredients that seem impossible to combine, producing extraordinary results. Poetry is based on rules of construction. It sets up a rhythm, which then breaks, before finally returning to it. The play on the meanings of words, sometimes several meanings in just one word, is extremely intellectually inspiring. We can read a poem a thousand times, and still find its new meanings.
Generally, our passage through the wonderful world of poetry is cut short by a rather reduced exposure during childhood and the overly analytical approach of this literary genre (类型), which is given in most schools. Although the studies that experts have conducted on poetry get a lot of interesting results, poetry still holds a mystery that science hasn’t yet been able to investigate. For example, why a perfect cadence (抑扬顿挫) and rhythm can lift the spirit of people is the new challenge for the research.
1. What is the main difference between poetry and music
A.Music causes fewer goosebumps.
B.Poetry creates more tingling sensations.
C.They work on different parts of the brain.
D.They are processed in different parts of the brain.
2. What does the author probably think of poetry
A.It expresses something about the poet.
B.It is vague in its meaning but rich in emotional experience.
C.It combines ingredients and extraordinary results.
D.It’s a pure game of language that only surprises readers.
3. What might be the problem when we learn poetry at school
A.We make children more exposed to it. B.We haven’t read a poem a thousand times.
C.We rely too much on our teachers. D.We analyze this literary genre too much.
4. Where can you read the passage
A.In a paper on geography. B.In a newspaper.
C.In a biography. D.In a magazine on wildlife.
Passage 13
(23-24高二下·山东临沂·期中)Poetry and science seem like opposites. Yet, if we look through our history, we’ll see that navigating (理解) science through poetry is not a new concept. In fact, records of scientific poetry can date back to the late 1700s. English physician and naturalist Erasmus Darwin (Charles Darwin’s grandfather) used poetry to celebrate scientific discoveries and inventions in The Botanic Garden, which he published in 1791. His book was well-received in Britain and the United States. In the next few decades, many European and North American poets followed his lead.
This relationship unfortunately became weak as literature and the natural sciences gradually grew apart by the end of the 19th century. While scientific research expanded rapidly, the topics being studied also became more specialized. Experts believe that poetry — a relatively time-consuming art form — simply couldn’t keep up with the demand for more efficient science communication. All of this has led to scientific literature being gas we know it today: articles written in complicated, academic language that is not easily understood by non-scientists.
In recent years, there’ve been calls to explore the intersections between science and the creative arts. For example, in 2014, Dr. Sam Illingworth, a senior lecturer at the University We stem Australia, started a weekly blog called The Poetry of Science where he reads a piece of scientific research and translates the findings into an original piece of poetry. His blog reached tens of thousands of readers, and he has since extended his work to research publications.
Like many other experts, Dr. Illingworth believes that poetry can help facilitate dialogue between scientists and non-scientists, and this view is supported by studies from around the world!
As we continue to make advances in science and technology, perhaps we can also turn to poetry to help us navigate the ever-growing fountain of knowledge reported by scientists each day.
1. Why does the author mention The Botanic Garden
A.To propose new means to combine poetry and science.
B.To explain the historical concepts of poetry and science
C.To prove poetry and science have long been integrated.
D.To show poetry and science functioned differently in history.
2. What is said about today’s scientific literature
A.It is written in poetic language. B.It is unfriendly to non-scientists
C.It becomes a time-consuming art form. D.It contributes to the scientific research.
3. What does Dr. Illingworth use his blog to do
A.Summarize research findings in a poem. B.Stress the influence of science on poetry.
C.Encourage scientists to share their research. D.Offer readers a platform to create poems.
4. What is the best title for the text
A.Science gives new life to poetry. B.Poetry and science change our life.
C.Communicating science through poetry. D.Firing our enthusiasm for science education.
Passage 14
(2023·浙江温州·二模)Today, poetry and science are often considered to be mutually exclusive(互相排斥)career paths. But that wasn’t always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets. The poet John Keats was a licensed surgeon. Combining the two practices fell out of favor in the 1800s. But translating research into lyrics, haiku, and other poetic forms is resurging(再现)among scientists as they look for alternative ways to inspire others with their findings.
“Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world,” says Sam Illingworth, a poet and a geoscientist who works at the University of Western Australia. Through workshops and a new science-poetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki in Finland, joined one of Illingworth’s workshops. In the workshop, she was grouped with other scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a 17-syllable-long poem, which spotlighted water, a fluid that featured in all of the group members’ research projects. “It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly easy to write the poem,” Mazon says. She plans to continue writing. “We do a disservice(伤害)to ourselves to think that scientists can’t be artistic and that art can’t be used to communicate scientific ideas,” Mazon says.
That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands-off PowerPoint slides. “Actually, when science communication involves writing and sharing poems, it invites a two-way dialogue between experts and nonexperts,” he says. Scientist-poet Manjula Silva, an educator at Imperial College London, agrees. Poetry provides a way to translate complex scientific concepts into a language that everyone can understand, Silva says.
Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding with others. The distinction between scientists and poets is less than people might think. We’re all just people with hopefully really interesting things to say and to share.
1. What is the purpose of mentioning the celebrities in paragraph 1
A.To display they were talented.
B.To confirm they were out of favor.
C.To encourage different career paths.
D.To show poetry and science can be combined.
2. What are Illingworth’s workshops aimed to do
A.Promote a new science-poetry journal.

Passage 15
(23-24高二下·湖南·阶段练习)Open-air jazz, locally-grow n vegetables, Focaccia bread, goat cheese, and Narcan training all competed against a rainstorm last Tuesday at Westside Farmers Market’s annual College Night.
And the vendors (商贩) held out pretty well. Even as the raindrops intensified, folks kept exploring the tables stationed in the parking lot of St. Monica Church. Among the crowd were a number of college students, mostly from the University of Rochester, likely brought in by the College Night awards being offered—a five-dollar token (购物券),a handbag, and a prize raffle entry, all free of charge.
Now in its 15th year, Westside volunteer Jackie Farrell said the market partners merely cooperate with local farms, businesses, and community groups to populate its tables. “Our mission really is to serve the people in the community, getting them health and nutrition information, and connecting them to the farmers who grow the produce,” Farrell said, “It is typical that everything has to be local. It’s a producer-only market, so you have to grow or produce whatever you’re going to sell here.” Those producers had diverse offerings. Vegetables, of course, were abundant but sellers also pushed cheeses, spreads, bread, prepared pasta dishes, and much more.
The community groups offering information were diverse too. Recovery All Ways, a local nonprofit with a stated “mission to support anyone affected by substance use disorder” handed out Narcan and trained people in its use. Their station was next to a Moms Demand Action tent, where staffers provided information on physical safety. SNAP-Ed nutrition and benefits educators also ran a table.
The activities of the stations were scored by live music. The University’s Midnight Ramblers performed, and a local jazz band played away as the rain showers started rolling in.
Farrell hoped that the College Night promotion would help make students more comfortable crossing the bridge into the Rochester community. “We love college students, and we keep encouraging them that all they have to do is go across the bridge.”
1. What may attract college students to the College Night

Stop wasting food at school.
“The children are making a big effort to think in a sensible way about the food they put on their plates. You can take as many slices as you want, but one at a time.

From next week you’ll be able to put any waste from fresh fruit and vegetables into the special green bin at the back of the canteen. Passage 8

C 2. A 3. D 4. B
根据第二段最后一句“However, the tingling sensations produced by poetry activate different areas of the brain compared to those activated by music. (然而,与音乐相比,诗歌所产生的刺痛感激活了大脑的不同区域)”可知,诗歌和音乐的主要不同之处在于它们对大脑的不同区域产生刺激作用。故选C项。
2. 细节理解题。根据第三段中“In addition, a poem expresses the poet’s ideas. (此外,诗歌还能表达诗人的思想)”可知,作者认为诗歌可以表达诗人的思想。故选A项。
根据最后一段第一句“Generally, our passage through the wonderful world of poetry is cut short by a rather reduced exposure during childhood and the overly analytical approach of this literary genre (类型), which is given in most schools. (一般来说,我们对美妙的诗歌世界的探索被童年时期较少的接触和大多数学校对这种文学体裁的过度分析所打断)”可知,作者认为我们在学生时期学习诗歌时的过度分析打断了我们对诗歌世界的探索。故选D项。
4. 推理判断题。根据第一段“What’s the effect of poetry on our brain Scientists have been investigating the neuronal (神经元的) connections and brain circuits that can work in the reading of poetry for some time.
C 2. B 3. A 4. C
根据第一段“In fact, records of scientific poetry can date back to the late 1700s. English physician and naturalist Erasmus Darwin (Charles Darwin’s grandfather) used poetry to celebrate scientific discoveries and inventions in The Botanic Garden, which he published in 1791.(事实上,科学诗歌的记录可以追溯到18世纪末。英国内科医生和博物学家伊拉斯谟·达尔文(查尔斯·达尔文的祖父)在1791年出版的《植物园》一书中用诗歌来庆祝科学发现和发明)”可知,作者提到《植物园》是为了证明诗歌和科学早已融为一体。故选C。
2. 细节理解题。根据第二段“All of this has led to scientific literature being gas we know it today: articles written in complicated, academic language that is not easily understood by non-scientists.(所有这一切都导致了我们今天所知道的科学文献:用复杂的学术语言写成的文章,非科学家不容易理解)”可知,今天的科学文献对非科学家不友好。故选B。
根据第三段“In recent years, there’ve been calls to explore the intersections between science and the creative arts. 4. 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“As we continue to make advances in science and technology, perhaps we can also turn to poetry to help us navigate the ever-growing fountain of knowledge reported by scientists each day.(随着科学技术的不断进步,也许我们也可以求助于诗歌来帮助我们驾驭科学家每天报告的不断增长的知识之泉)”结合文章主要说明了诗歌和科学在历史上可以追溯到18世纪末,不幸的是,随着文学和自然科学在19世纪末逐渐分离,这种关系变得薄弱起来。而如今的科学文献对非科学家不友好,指出诗歌可以有助于科学的传播。可知,C选项“通过诗歌传播科学”最符合文章标题。故选C。
B.Inspire outsiders to pursue their careers in science.
C.Encourage science communication through poems.
D.Get scientists to exchange ideas about the latest research.
3. What does Illingworth think of the dominant ways of science communication
A.Conventional. B.Effective. C.Innovative. D.Complex.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Scientists Take on Poetry
B.Scientists and Poets Think Alike
C.Poetry: A Great Tool to Question the World
D.Science Communication: A Two-way Dialogue
D 2. C 3. A 4. A
根据文章第一段中“The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets. The poet John Keats was a licensed surgeon. Combining the two practices fell out of favor in the 1800s. But translating research into lyrics, haiku, and other poetic forms is resurging(再现)among scientists as they look for alternative ways to inspire others with their findings.
根据文章第二段中“Through workshops and a new science-poetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field. (通过研讨会和一本名为Consilience的新科学诗歌期刊,伊林沃思正在帮助科学家将他们的最新成果转化为诗歌,以吸引他们所在科学领域以外的人的欣赏。)”可知,伊林沃思的研讨会旨在鼓励通过诗歌进行科学交流。故选C。
3. 推理判断题。根据文章第四段中“That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands-off PowerPoint slides. (Illingworth也赞同这一观点,他认为科学传播计划往往被公开讲座和不干涉的PowerPoint幻灯片所主导。)”可知,伊林沃思认为,科学交流倡议往往被公开讲座的幻灯片所主导,这是一种老套的方式。故选A。
故选A。
A.Free prizes. B.Scenery in the rain. C.Delicious food. D.Good music.
2. What is the characteristic of Westside Farmers Market
A.It gives college students tokens. B.It is full of noise and excitement.
C.Its offerings are locally grown or prepared. D.It appeals people from all walks of life.
3. Which of the following can best describe the College Night
A.Crowded and chaotic. B.Luxurious and splendid.
C.Romantic and peaceful. D.Busy and festive.
4. What might be a suitable title for the text
A.Westside Farmers Market is flowering rapidly
B.College Night channels products to community
C.College Night bridges university and community
D.Westside Farmers Market is expanding nationwide

Even as the raindrops intensified, folks kept exploring the tables stationed in the parking lot of St. Monica Church.(商贩们坚持得很好。 可知,大学之夜活动很繁忙;再结合倒数第二段的“The activities of the stations were scored by live music. The University’s Midnight Ramblers performed, and a local jazz band played away as the rain showers started rolling in.(大学的“午夜漫步者”进行了表演,当地的爵士乐队在雨点滚滚而来的时候继续演奏。)”
根据最后一段“Farrell hoped that the College Night promotion would help make students more comfortable crossing the bridge into the Rochester community.(法雷尔希望大学之夜的促销活动能帮助学生更舒适地跨过这座桥进入罗切斯特社区。)”
