Read the passage and choose the best answers.
I moved to the Spanish capital, Madrid, nearly two months ago. I am here for a year teaching English in a secondary school as a language assistant. Before I arrived, I thought I would be able to adapt to Spanish culture very easily, but my previous(先前的)expectations have been very different from the reality.
Firstly, I didn't realise how difficult it would be to adapt to the Spanish day and the timings of meals. Spanish "midday" is at 14:00, meaning lunch is never before then. My expectation was that I'd be eating lunch at 12:00-13:00, but most days it's 15:30 before I eat lunch. Can I really still call this lunch ! It is the same with dinner or tea. In the UK I eat dinner between 18:00 and 19:00, but now my dinner time is 21:30.
The thing I didn't realise is that this affects the Spanish sleeping routine. Eating dinner so late of course means going to bed so much later. It's such a British thing to go to bed at 22:00! Also, because everything happens later in Spain, the evening socialising time, is very late! Most British night clubs, for example, close at 02:00 or 03:00, but here the party is only just starting at 02:00! This is something else that has really surprised me.
Queuing politely and being careful around strangers is also something that is very British, something that I only realised when I arrived in Spain. I took it for granted that queuing patiently is the norm, but this isn't the case in Spain. If there's a free table in a restaurant, you quickly take it, even if other people have been waiting longer than you.
Moreover, the metro is one big pushing affair. However, the lack of "British politeness" isn't all bad, as it reflects how Spaniards aren't shy in public; being friendly and talking to someone you've never met before is considered normal and is encouraged. Perhaps we'd say that the etiquette of politely queuing in Britain is connected with a culture where interacting(互动)with people you don't know is less common.
Finally, the reality of the Spanish diet is very different from my expectations. I never imagined I'd get so many comments and questions from my flatmates about what I'm eating! Yesterday I made a piece of peanut butter on toast, and my flatmate said that this is such a British thing. It's the same with drinking tea. Food products that are so normal in the UK aren't nearly as popular here.

China and Western countries have something different in cultures about certain animals, but when it comes to pigs, we have the same idea—pigs are ugly, lazy and stupid.
Just look at some Chinese sayings such as "Boiling a dead pig" and "A pig looking in the mirror is still a pig". And in English, there are some expressions like "Eating like a pig" and "Pigs might fly". None of them are complimentary.
However, pigs have some good qualities (品质). They are even as smart as dogs and elephants. They have good memories. And they know whether people treat them well or not.
A UK cartoon, Peppa Pig is a most popular cartoon. The four members in the pig family teach children from all around the world about love, friendship and the value of family. And a Chinese cartoon movie, The Adventures of McDull, is also very famous. In the cartoon, the little pig, McDull, has a heart of gold and always works hard towards his dreams. Most people want quick success, but McDull is slow and patient, and not afraid of failing again and again.
Maybe when we talk about pigs next time, we should think of their good qualities.

There are many unusual customs around the world. If you travel there, it's important for you to know about them.
Greece
If children are changing their teeth, instead of saving their teeth and placing them under a pillow (枕头) for the tooth fairy (仙子) to collect, Greek children's teeth are thrown to the roof of their homes. This unusual tradition is thought to bring good luck for the family, as well as a healthy tooth for the child!
China
When dining with locals and traveling in cities, it's important to give out gifts as a way of saying thank you. But remember to avoid giving them the following gifts: clocks, handkerchiefs (手帕) , shoes and anything white or black. It may seem like a good way of saying thank you for their lovely treat, but they are each strongly connected with death and funerals. A proper gift to pass on to show your thanks is delicious sweets or fresh tea.
Thailand
This is probably one of the most unusual customs to look out for, but it's also a lot of fun—especially for your kids! Every November, in the town of Lop Buri, the locals lay out fresh fruit, cakes and candies on top of tables that line the streets. But these mouth—watering treats aren't for the people, they're for the native Macaque monkeys to enjoy. This strange but wonderful celebration is called the Monkey Buffet Festival, and is a must—see on a trip to Thailand.

Why are your study habits different from those of your friends Why do you seem to learn faster in some classes while more slowly in others One reason you may not know is that people have different learning types. Scientists say there are three different learning types: Visual, Auditory(听觉型) and Kin esthetic(动觉型).
Visual learners learn best by seeing. If you seem to easily remember information from pictures, graphs(图表) and videos, you are probably a visual learner. You are not good at copying down what the teacher says in class. Never mind. You can draw graphs or pictures instead, if you find that works better for you.
Auditory learners learn best by hearing. If you seem to easily remember things by hearing them, then you are probably an auditory learner. You must listen carefully while the teacher is speaking because it's the easiest way for you to learn. Sometimes you may find that taking notes stops you from listening carefully. After class, you can write down what you remember or borrow your friends' notes to copy.
Kin esthetic learners learn best by doing. If you seem to learn best by working with your hands, you are probably a kin esthetic learner. Taking notes by writing can make you pay close attention to information as you receive it. Of course, you can learn best by making full use of labs or other class activities.
Hope you learn better by knowing what your personal learning type is.

Eating manners
Japan: It is "perfectly" okay to slurp when you eat noodles. Unlike making big noises, slurping slightly is not rude. Japanese also say it tastes better if you slurp.

It's a social occasion-lunches are seldom quick and suppers can last for hours. Where you sit matters in the country. Before you get seated, look for place cards, or wait until the host seats you. The United States

Clothing is a language. It tells us about individuals: their personality, age, place in society and so on. If we want to know more about society,we can look at traditional clothing.
The continent of Africa has a long history and a rich culture, and this is shown in traditional dress. You often find three colors-red,gold and green in the clothing. The first color stands for the blood of millions of people who suffered as slaves(奴隶). The second is for the rich resources of the African earth, and the third represents the grasslands of home.
The patterns on the clothing also have a meaning. A common pattern is in the form of a cross "×",which stands for "unity". Another pattern is a rectangular(矩形)box, which represents "strength".
Because clothing has a strong social meaning, people are very careful in choosing what to wear. It would be a serious mistake to wear the wrong clothing,or to wear clothes in the wrong way. For instance,in Ghana,a woman should wear her waistband differently according to the importance of the social event.
Traditional dress also tells us about everyday life. African designs are famous for loose(宽松的)clothing. The climate, with the hot sun and wide temperature ranges(变化), requires that the clothes should be comfortable for daily life.
Although many people wear Western clothes, particularly in the big cities in Africa, traditional dress is very highly valued(评价). This is because it has deep cultural meanings.

The British often simply say "hello" when they meet friends. They usually shake hands only when they meet for the first time. Social kissing, often just a peck(轻吻)on the cheek(脸颊), is common in an informal(非正式的)situation between men and women and also between women who know each other very well.
In Japan, the common greeting for both men and women is to bow when they greet someone, instead of giving a handshake or a hug.
Hungarians like to greet in a friendly way—kiss each other on both cheeks. The most common way is to kiss from your right to your left. When men meet for the first time, a handshake is the norm.
In Albania, men shake hands when greeting one another. A kiss on the cheek may also be common if there is a close relationship. Women may shake hands or kiss each other on both cheeks.
