Trees are one of the oldest “citizens” of our Earth. They keep our air clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality and provide food and building materials.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. From 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to warn animals not to go near . Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.
When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very rapidly and become strong enough to face challenges later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruits.
The tree doesn’t become a real adult until it is 20 to 25 years old. The tree reaches its largest size. The adult tree gives us shade (树荫), oxygen (氧气) and natural beauty. It is also a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we give the adult tree proper care, it will go on to live healthily for many years.
Gradually, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow (空心的) or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home for small animals and is a source (根源) of food for many other animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience. When we are looking at the life of a tree, we learn about that each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge. Enjoy every minute of the life of the trees and take care of the trees!

You are running around in the park. But then suddenly, you fall and hurt yourself. “Ow!” you cry. This sound is very familiar to us all. Crying out when we get hurt is a natural reaction. But what is it about this sound that makes us shout it out
Scientists from the National University of Singapore now believe they’ve found the answer. The effort of shouting the word “ow” actually interferes (干预) with pain messages traveling to the brain. So by shouting it out, it distracts us from the feeling of pain.
The scientists tested how long volunteers could hold their hands in very cold water. There were five rounds of the test. In the first round, they were allowed to shout “ow” when they felt pain. In another round, they had to stay silent.
The results showed that volunteers were able to keep their hands in the cold water for longer when they were allowed to shout out. They managed around 30 seconds on average, five seconds more than when they had to remain silent.
“We found that a simple vocal act such as saying ‘ow’ helps individuals deal with pain,” the report from the scientists stated.
What’s more, expressions of pain are shared among languages. While cries of “ow” or “ouch” are heard in English, South Africans yell “eina”, Italians shout “ahia” and Chinese “aiyo”.
Scientists said in the report: “Shared among these languages is a sound during which the mouth simply opens, the tongue lies flat (水平的) and the lips unrounded. It is a simple sound that requires little control while maximizing (充分利用) the volume.” So these sounds are useful to shout if we feel pain.
13.What does the underlined word “distracts” mean in Paragraph 2
A.表达 B.分散 C.增加 D.消失
14.According to the passage, the scientists found ________.
A.pain messages don’t travel to the brain

15.What do we know about the test

B.Volunteers felt less pain when they weren’t allowed to shout out.
C.Volunteers stayed longer in cold water in the first round than in the second.
D.Volunteers all shouted the “ow” sound out in the test.
16.What is the passage mainly about
A.Any language is more exciting when we feel pain.
B.Shouting out is useful and helpful if you feel pain.

D.People shout to better express their feelings.

A long heat wave hit Europe last summer. The temperature reached 40℃. While both electric fans and air conditioners (空调) can help beat the heat, a comparison between the two has never stopped. 17
In most cases, an electric fan is able to get the job done. 18 Most of them take no time to set up. They can be easily carried around in a room. Electric fans are much cheaper than air conditioners. They also use less electricity. You could leave a fan running for 24 hours and still use less energy than two hours of air conditioning.
But fans and air conditioners work in quite different ways. An electric fan doesn’t cool the air in your home. It leaves you feeling cooler by moving the air around so that your sweat (汗) dries up faster. 19 In comparison to fans, air conditioners can lower the temperature of the whole room. When you have your air conditioner on, you can feel its effect from wherever you stand.
In short, electric fans can work wonders in summer and they are better for the environment. But tuning on a fan doesn’t make much difference when the temperature is above 35℃. 20 You should also use an air conditioner when you are sharing your room with others.
A.Fans have many advantages.
B.Many people have wondered: Which one is more useful
C.All air conditioners work similarly.
D.That is why you need to stay near a fan while using it.
E.In this situation, you’d better turn on an air conditioner.

Nowadays, typing or texting is taking the place of the strokes (笔画) of Chinese characters (汉字). For the reason, people are paying less attention to handwriting. As a result, they can’t even remember exactly how to write a given character sometimes. This is called “character amnesia (提笔忘字)”.
To change the situation, the TV program named Chinese Character Dictation (听写) Competition came out. Meng Man, who teaches at Minzu University of China, took part in the competition as a judge (评委). “I was surprised by some competitors because I couldn’t even remember how to write certain characters. But they could,” she said. “Now many adults have trouble writing Chinese characters. This program is really great, since it draws people’s attention to this problem.”
When typing or texting, most people use a system where they type out the pinyin of a character and then get a list of all possible Chinese characters. They just need to choose the one they want from the list. The bad thing about the system is that it stops people from thinking about how a Chinese character is formed.
“Chinese characters are generally square. They teach people to be upright (正直的). Typing or texting will influence people’s understanding of the traditional culture behind the Chinese characters,” Meng said.
To solve the problem of “character amnesia”, experts suggest that people change their mobile phone texting way from pinyin to handwriting. In this way, they can avoid forgetting how to write characters.
