66-year-old David G. Evans, from the UK, is a chemistry teacher in Beijing. He is famous in China for his fun chemical experiments (实验) online.
When he was young, Evans became interested in China and wanted to learn more about it. His dream of visiting the country came true in 1987, when he went to a chemistry meeting in Nanjing. Evans came to China once or twice a year before moving to Beijing in 1996 to work there as a teacher.
To show the wonders of chemistry to more people, Evans goes to different places in China. So far, he’s visited more than 300 cities across China, giving chemistry lessons and doing chemical experiments in schools, science museums and other places.
To reach out to more students, Evans started posting videos of chemical experiments online in 2018. “I hope I can help students see the beauty of chemistry, and that some of them may become scientists,” he said. Evans has over 9.9 million followers online. He’s posted more than 500 videos and got over 23 million “likes”. After seeing his experiments, many students find chemistry is exciting and show an interest in it.

Under the burning sun, an elderly man picked an ear of rice, checked it with an expert eye, and moved on. He worked from morning to night. No one could imagine that the day before, this farmer had received the Medal of the Republic. His name was Yuan Longping.
Yuan was born in Beijing in 1930. When he was young, he was sad to know many people in China suffered from hunger. After leaving college, Yuan spent nearly 20 years in solving this problem. In 1973, he succeeded in developing the hybrid rice.
Yuan deeply believed that “food is the most important thing in the world”. He had a dream of developing a more productive rice plant. However, it was easier said than done. Over 3,000 of his experiments failed. “Failure is very common in scientific research,” he once said. “Every time I fall down, I’ll get up and try again.” He never gave up exploring the possibility of developing the rice plant and finally his dream came true.
Longping Rice Museum was built in memory of Yuan Longping and it was opened to the public in 2019. It’s the world’s first rice museum. There are three exhibition halls in the museum. In the area called Golden Miracle, modern tools are used to present how rice grows. Besides, over 700 exhibits in the museum are displayed to show China’s farming culture in an all-around way.
Yuan passed away in 2021, but his dreams live on. Now Yuan’s rice is grown around China and in more than 60 other countries. His lifelong efforts have helped to feed 80 million more people a year. His example continues to encourage people to follow in his footsteps.

The real situation is unpredictable, so I have to be fully prepared, ” Xu wrote in her book.
“I hope my personal experiences can encourage more people to go after their dreams,” Xu added. “Don’t stop trying. It’s hard to say when all your hard work will pay off, but they will when it matters most. ”
