Colin Farrell has completed the Dublin Marathon by pushing his friend in a wheelchair across the finish line. The 48-year-old act or ran the final 4 kilometers of the 42 km race while pushing his friend Emma Fogarty, who lives with a rare skin condition, to the end of the race.
Back home in his native Ireland, Farrell ran the marathon to raise money for DEBRA, an Irish charity supporting people who, like Fogarty, have the incurable genetic condition epidermolysis bullosa (EB) — also known as butterfly skin.
Emma Fogarty was born with a severe form of the condition, as she was born with no skin on her left foot and right arm and can develop very painful swelling from even the slightest touch. But now, Fogarty is Ireland’s oldest surviving person with the condition, and after reaching a milestone of turning 40 in June, she and Farrell decided to complete the race together.
“I have known Emma for many years. She is what courage and pure determination are all about. That run was nothing compared to the pain she is forced to endure every single day, even though she doesn’t show it. It was an honour to see her waiting for me with 4 km to go, each of those representing a decade of her life, and to do the final stretch together. I’ll never forget it.” said Farrell.
Fogarty and Farrell originally set out to raise ?400,000 ($660,000 AUD) for the charity but now aim to hit the million-euro mark ($1.6 million AUD), after the pair completed the marathon in just over four hours.
4. What is the purpose of the DEBRA
A. To promote a healthy lifestyle. B. To help the disabled make more friends.
C. To encourage people to run a marathon. D. To support people with an incurable skin disease.
5. What inspired Fogarty and Farrell to complete the race together
A. Fogarty’s strong interest in running. B. Farrell’s desire to get popular online.
C. Fogarty’s reaching a milestone of turning 40. D. The doctor’s advice to improve Fogarty’s fitness.
6. What does the underlined word “endure” in the fourth paragraph probably mean
A. Bear. B. Avoid. C. Escape. D. Cherish.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. They completed the marathon within four hours. B. The money raised is far below their expectation.
C. The fundraising event has received great response. D. They will race together again in the near future.
C
The fastest-moving wildfires are by far the most destructive (破坏性的) because they force firefighters to focus on saving lives, instead of saving property. Now, researchers have worse news: Wildfires are growing faster with climate change.
That’s according to a new analysis that used satellite data to examine tens of thousands of wildfires between 2001 and 2020. The researchers found that the fastest-moving fires were responsible for nearly 90 percent of damaged and destroyed homes, despite making up just 3 percent of fires during the period.
And the phenomenon is accelerating (加速). The paper, published last week in the journal Science, warns that fires are spreading more quickly in the Western U. S. as climate change fuels warmer and drier conditions, posing a growing threat to already at-risk communities near forests and grasslands.
“We’re the first to document this trend,” said report co-author Jennifer Balch, a fire ecology expert and associate professor at the University of Colorado. “The reason why this is so important is because some of our most deadly and destructive wildfires have been incredibly fast, but they’ve also been relatively tiny events in terms of geography.”
Take Colorado’s 2021 Marshall Fire. The fire burned a relatively small area of suburban Boulder County north of Denver, Balch said. But the disaster, fueled by 100-mile-per-hour winds, killed two people and destroyed more than 1,000 homes, making it the most destructive fire in Colorado’s history.
The study comes as natural disasters strike communities across the country, forcing property owners, emergency planners and policymakers to rethink how to prepare for extreme weather. Balch said the new research highlights a major gap in wildfire-related modeling, risk assessment and emergency planning, which have historically focused more on wildfire intensity and size than speed.
“With warming temperatures increasing the likelihood of wildfires across the U. S. , we would expect to see more fast fire events in the future,” the paper says.
8. How did the researchers get their findings
A. By making an experiment. B. By using previous studies.
C By asking people questions. D. By analyzing the satellite data.
9. What is the warning of the paper published last week
A. Wildfires are growing faster with climate change. B. Climate change poses a growing threat to people.
C. The climate will become warmer and drier. D. Forests and grasslands put people at risk.
10. Why does the author give the example of Colorado’s 2021 Marshall Fire
A. To stress the importance of wildfires in Colorado.
B. To present the result of the most destructive wildfire.
C. To show how a tiny event became the most destructive fire.
D. To warn that natural disasters strike many communities.
11. What is the researchers’ attitude toward wildfires in the paper
A. Uncaring. B. Optimistic. C. Worried. D. Supportive.
D
Maths phobia (恐惧症) is older than you might think. A hundred years ago, German physicist Felix Auerbach, feeling sad about the phenomenon and hoping to find ways to solve it, wrote a book called The Fear of Mathematics and How to Overcome It. Maths, he said, has so much to contribute to society that solving this fear is a challenge of the highest importance.
Why do we fear mathematics At heart, says Auerbach, it comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of what maths is. The fear of messing up a calculation may be real, but the fact that there are many excellent mathematicians who are terrible at calculation proves that numeracy (计算能力) and mathematics aren’t the same thing. What, then, is mathematics
Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an art. For me, part of the issue is that we are stuck in the first box. A focus completely on technical skills misses the joy and excitement that can come from finding patterns and understanding them, from seeing the true beauty of mathematics. That beauty lies in wonderfully elegant thinking that allows us to understand the infinite (无穷大), explore the amazing symmetries (对称) of art and nature, and delight in the perfection of an abstract world of ideas. As a language, what sets maths apart is the universality (普及性) of its truths — you can become fluent wherever you are from. If we can be shown the beauty of mathematics, we will forget to be afraid of the technical details behind it.
Today’s self-help experts like to point out that, physiologically, we experience anxiety the same way we experience excitement. So, if your heart is racing and your palms are sweating before a big event, you simply have to tell yourself that you are excited. In the same way, fear can be negative (dread) or positive (awe). Our goal should be to try to move people from a view of mathematics as a collection of calculations whose great difficulty brings dread to an appreciation of a beautiful language whose complexity inspires awe.
A hundred years on Auerbach’s writing is as relevant as ever. It is a timely reminder that “maths anxiety”, as it is now called, remains as much a challenge in 21st century as it was in the 20th.
12. Why do we fear mathematics according to Auerbach
A. Because maths contributes a lot to society. B. Because we always mess up a calculation.
C. Because we misunderstand what maths is. D. Because we lack strategies to learn maths.
13 What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A. The understanding of mathematics. B. The application of mathematics.
C. The influence of mathematics. D. The introduction to excellent mathematicians.
14. What is our aim when dealing with the fear of maths
A. To encourage people to read more books about physiology.
B. To inspire people to learn and enjoy a complex foreign language.
C. To help people learn how to do calculations correctly and accurately.
D. To change the view of maths from calculating to appreciating its beauty.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Don’t care about maths B. Don’t fear the numbers
C. Maths phobia is not a challenge anymore D. Maths anxiety is common at all age levels

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I first met Michael in the hallway when I was teaching in a job training program and recruiting (招收) students who were potential dropouts. As I gave him our usual introduction for the program, my first impression was, “I sure wouldn’t want to meet this one in a dark street.”
The next morning he was in our office to tell me that he would be in our program.
So Michael was officially enrolled in our class. But it became immediately obvious that Michael couldn’t be matched with a suitable partner. He distanced himself with his attitude. And he soon became bored with the skill practices, but he would focus on the typing lessons for longer periods. Often I would catch him off task, playing games on the computer or following me around the room. He also told me stories of how he had injuries and hospitalizations that resulted from his anger. In desperation I suggested that he should put his interesting stories on the computer, which he also seemed to think was a good idea.
He was happily occupied in composition for more than a week and less of a bother to me. Finally, he printed out several pages, brought them to my desk and asked me to read them. Since the bell was going to ring. I told him that I would be glad to take them home with me and read them later. Later that evening I pulled the folder out and reluctantly began to read the secret papers, expecting more of “America’ s Most Wanted” episodes (片段). Instead, I read a personal narrative written by a vulnerable (易受伤害的), sensitive young man who wore a cold and lonely shield (盾牌) of isolation. The story was simple, moving, and sincere. Although his writing style was simple, his message was powerful enough to bring tears to my eyes. The next morning he met me at my desk, asking me what I thought of his papers. I told him that I admired his courage and his ability to overcome so many difficulties.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
From then on, Michael devoted weeks to writing about his life and I began to offer him guidance.

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
From then on, Michael devoted weeks to writing about his life and I began to offer him guidance. I began telling him how difficult it was to understand parts of his narrative, such as its lack of coherence and the incomplete ideas. He seemed eager to convey his message more clearly, and for several months we had mini-lessons on sentence and paragraph structure, focus, description and spelling — all done within the context of his writing. As his writing changed, there was also a change in his personality. His anger softened and I even found him helping classmates with word processing. Michael discovered himself in the process of writing.
I now teach language arts to 77 seventh-graders with Michael’s story always in my mind. It serves as a constant reminder to quit “teaching” so much and to give my students room to learn. I now give my students more choices in reading selections and writing topics, so they can explore, take risks, and express themselves as Michael did. Because of Michael’s need to write about his own life, I allow my students more opportunities to write about themselves. I may never have another Michael in the classroom, but I now know what a learner can accomplish when he is given the freedom to learn and the opportunity to take risks.
