Kieng Riven’s eight birthday was fast coming up so his mother asked him what he wanted. She expected the youngster to answer with a list of toys and games. His answer took his mother by surprise and brought her to tears.
A child’s birthday is usually spent doing fun activities, eating cakes, opening gifts surrounded (包围) by family and friends. Young Kieng had a different idea of how he wanted to spend his big day. Instead, he wanted to gift his community by handing out a dozen pizzas to homeless people living in a “tent city” in Charlotte, NC.
Antiqua, hoping to make good on her son’s birthday request, shopped around neighbourhood pizzas to see which of them could quickly fill a large order of 100 pizzas. Over the past 50,000 years, at least 161 kinds of mammals (哺乳动物) were driven to extinction (灭绝) during this period. The largest of them were hit the hardest — the megaherbivores, weighing over a ton. Fifty thousand years ago, there were 57 kinds of megaherbivores. Today, only 11 remain. These remaining 11 kinds have also seen extreme reductions in their populations, but not to the point of complete extinction.
A research group from the Danish Aarhus University now concludes that many of these lost kinds were hunted to extinction by humans.
Jens-Christian Svenning, a researcher, says, “Early modern humans were effective hunters of even the largest animals and clearly had the ability to reduce the populations of large animals. These large animals were and are particularly easy to die out because they have long gestation (妊娠) periods and produce very few babies at a time.”
The study shows that human hunting of large animals such as mammoths, mastodons, and giant sloths was widespread and continuous across the world. It also shows that the animals went extinct at very different times and at different rates around the world. In some local areas, it happened quite quickly, while in other places it took over 10,000 years. But everywhere, it happened after modern humans arrived, or in Africa’s case, after cultural advancements among humans.
The researchers point out that the loss of large animals has had deep ecological (生态的) effects. Large animals play a central role in ecosystems. Their disappearance has resulted in great changes in ecosystem structures and functions.
“Our results show the need for active protection and restoration efforts. By reintroducing large mammals, we can help restore ecological balances and support biodiversity, which developed in ecosystems rich in large animals,” says Svenning.
12. How many kinds of megaherbivores are there today
A. 161. B. 57. C. 11. D. 0.
13. What made the large animals easy to be extinct
A. Their long life. B. Their few babies. C. Their slow growth. D. Their special diet.
14. What does the fact that the species went extinct at different times and rates show
A. There were no large animals left in some areas.
B. The environment in different areas was the same.
C. Human hunting was not the only cause of extinction.
D. Large animals could adapt easily to different conditions.
15. What’s Paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The importance of large mammals in the food chain.
B. The historical process of human hunting large mammals.
C. The need to stop human activities to protect large mammals.
D. The far-reaching effect of the extinction of large mammals on the ecosystem.

Today, I experienced three separate acts of kindness, and it felt like the world was sending me a message to always be kind, and willing to help others whenever possible.
It all started early in the morning, around 6 a. m., as I was heading to the office. While riding my bike, I saw a lady by the side of the road. She looked anxious, probably because she was running late and couldn’t find a taxi for the short distance she needed to travel. I decided to stop and offer her a ride. She seemed very happy and thanked me warmly when I dropped her off close to her destination. It was a small gesture, but it made me feel good knowing I had helped someone start their day a little more easily.
Later that night, around 1 a. m., I was returning home from a friend’s place, feeling a bit drunk and anxious to get home quickly. I was in an auto-rickshaw (自动人力车), and the driver hit a speed breaker too hard, causing the vehicle to stop in the middle of the road. I felt terrible and wondered whether I should help push the vehicle or just book another auto and leave. I couldn’t decide and ended up doing nothing, while the auto driver repeatedly tried to restart the vehicle.
Just then, a truly heartwarming act of kindness took place. Two passers-by in a load auto saw us and stopped to help. One of them got out and ran over to help us by pushing our auto. By the time he reached us, the auto managed to start on its own, but the small act of offering to help felt really special. It brought a smile to both my face and the auto driver’s. We thanked the two men.
The rest of the trip home, the auto driver couldn’t stop smiling and muttering (喃喃自语) about the kindness of the passers-by. He was very excited to see that people like them existed.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】A Bite of Food, a Taste of Culture
To promote Chinese food culture and enrich students’ campus life, our school held a food festival with the theme of “A Bite of Food, a Taste of Culture” in the dining room last Friday.
During the festival every class set up food stands with various food for others to try. Cooking classes were arranged in which students learned how to cook and explored the culture of traditional cuisines. The highlight was the cooking show where students displayed their cooking talents.
All the students present spoke highly of this activity which let them have a better understanding of China’s rich and profound food culture.

【答案】Once we reached my place, I needed to pay online. The driver gave me four different numbers to try, but none of them worked due to an issue with his bank. I was frustrated, but the driver politely suggested the problem might be on my end and that I could transfer the money later in the morning. We exchanged numbers, and I was struck by his trust and kindness. This reminded me of the kindness I had experienced earlier in the day, reinforcing the value of trust and goodwill.
I realized the driver had followed the example of passers-by and showed kindness to me. He remained patient and understanding, calmly suggesting solutions to the payment issue without any frustration. Reflecting on the day’s events, I saw how my small act of helping the lady in the morning had sparked a chain reaction of goodwill that led to this moment. I thanked the driver sincerely for his patience and kindness. This reinforced my belief that our actions, no matter how small, have meaningful effects and that kindness indeed comes back to us.
