We were seven hours past sun-up, but you never would have known that on Thursday afternoon as the roosters-adult male chickens began to crow. The noise started just after 2 p. m. and by the time it stopped, the dozen or so roosters would stretch open their mouths, extend their necks and cry out more than 100 times collectively in this event, which is one of the oldest contests at the Kentucky State Fair. Kentuckians, young and old, bring their roosters to the fair to see who can crow the most in a 15-minute stretch. The winning rooster’s owner takes home a bag of chicken feed.
It was about half an hour until the crow-off began when I settled into a seat across from a small stage full of cages. That’s where I met John Ball, the fair’s crowing organizer, who talked excitedly about the whole affair to come. “The only real rules are you have to bring a rooster and that you can’t egg it on during its 15 minutes in the spotlight,” he said.
I wondered how a rooster was trained to crow in the afternoon and fortunately, nine-year-old Ben Miller had some insight to share. When I introduced myself to him, he was already covering his rooster’s eyes gently with his hand. “Now, it thinks it’s dark,” Ben told me. Part of the trick was to make his rooster believe the sun hadn’t risen yet. That way, it would be ready to cry out as soon as it saw the light.
As I looked around, I saw that a few other roosters had joined us. One by one they were placed in the cages in front of the audience. The crowing continued for the full 15 minutes. After Ball’s timer went off, Sam Lamb, 15, and his rooster won the contest. It’d crowed 37 times, just a little more than half of the 67 crows from a few years before.
4. What can we say about the contest
A. It centers around six roosters. B. It lasts for a total of half an hour.
C. It is organized on a weekend afternoon. D. It is a tradition at the Kentucky State Fair.
5. What did John mean by saying “you can’t egg it on” in paragraph 2
A. You can’t leave it on an egg. B. You can’t motivate it to crow.
C. You can’t stop it from crowing. D. You can’t interrupt it with an egg.
6. What was Ben’s trick with his rooster
A. He made it confused about the time. B. He showed it some chicken feed.
C. He trained it to react to the timer. D. He left it alone in a dark room.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The science behind rooster crowing B. The history of the Kentucky State Fair
C. An occasion where roosters take center stage D. A day when John Ball shows up in a contest.

A new, flexible film(薄膜)with tiny sensors is going to make brain surgery safer and more accurate for problems like brain tumors and severe epilepsy(癫痫). This film looks like a thin plastic sheet and is put on the brain to record how brain cells work with much better detail than what we have now, says Shadi Dayeh, the main engineer from a university in California.
The sensors on the film are very sensitive, each being much smaller than a human hair, allowing for an incredibly detailed brain map. Dr. Ahmed Raslan, a brain doctor at another university and also a maker of this film, says this new thing will make it easier to understand how the brain works during surgery. When people are awake during surgery, they do different things that make their brain work in different ways. The film’s sensors indicate which areas of the brain are active during these tasks, helping surgeons to distinguish between healthy and diseased tissue.
The device has proven effective in animal studies, and in May, it received FDA approval for human trials. The development team is already working on a wireless version of the film that could be implanted for up to 30 days, potentially allowing patients with severe epilepsy to be monitored at home.
Looking ahead, the researchers imagine the film serving as a brain-computer interface for individuals who cannot communicate or move, enabling them to convert their thoughts into actions. This represents a milestone in both diagnostic capabilities and patient care, in agreement with the goals of the federal BRAIN Initiative, which aims to develop innovative tools for understanding and treating brain disorders. Despite recent funding cuts, the progress made with this sensor film is an evidence of the initiative’s success and the rapid advancement of brain technology.
8. What’s the function of the film mentioned in the text
A. Performing brain surgery. B. Tracking the activity of brain cells.
C. Monitoring brain surgery. D. Activating the function of brain cells.
9. How does the film assist doctors according to Dr. Ahmed Raslan
A. By keeping the patients awake.
B. By showing active parts of the brain.
C. By enhancing the efficiency of brain work.
D. By telling healthy tissue and unhealthy one.
10. What does Paragraph 3 focus on
A. The ongoing development of the film.
B The effect of the film in animal studies.
C. The potential of a cure for severe epilepsy.
D. The announcement of the development team.
11. Who might benefit directly from the film in the future
A. The disabled with brain disorders.
B. The patients with poor mental health.
C. Those used to working with computers.
D. Those in wheelchairs yet capable of thinking.
D
Sodium dehydroacetate (SDHA脱氢乙酸钠) is a preservative, particularly effective against molds (霉菌) and yeasts (酵母菌). It has been widely used in the food industry to extend shelf life and prevent spoilage. However, research has indicated potential health risks associated with long-term and high-dose consumption. Animal studies have suggested that SDHA can cause a decrease in food intake, weight loss, coagulation ability decline, and changes in liver and kidney tissues.
Scientific community has become increasingly concerned about its long-term health effects. It has been found that excessive (过度的) intake can lead to liver and kidney damage, central nervous system disorders, and other health issues. These findings have led to a reevaluation of its safety and use in food products.
In response to these concerns, food safety standards have been updated to limit the use of SDHA. For instance, the new standard GB2760-2024 in China has restricted its use in several food categories, including starch products, bread, pastries, and baking fillings, effective from February 8, 2025. This adjustment reflects a global trend where the use of SDHA is being strictly examined and limited due to potential health risks.
Faced with the new regulations, many manufacturers have to make significant changes to their preservative-based additives, taking into account not only the potential increase in production costs but also the need to upgrade their technological processes. The public, on the other hand, has shown a growing awareness and concern over food additives, which is driving the industry to develop safer and more natural preservatives. This trend is likely to influence the food additives industry’s development, as consumer preference shifts towards products with fewer and more natural additives.
12. What can be learned about SDHA from Paragraph 1
A. It has recently been proved poisonous.
B. It can keep food fresh for a longer time.
C. It can cause animals increase food intake.
D. It has been widely used in shelf production.
13. What do the research findings cause
A. Improvement of the SDHA use.
B. Stricter assessment of SDHA’s risk.
C. More concern about the food production.
D. Further investigation of the animals’ health.
14. Why is the new standard GB2760-2024 mentioned
A. To stress the China’s global influence.
B. To list the food categories harmed by SDHA.
C. To show action is taken to deal with concerns.
D. To highlight the potential health risks of SDHA.
15. Which is the best title of the text
A. Revisiting SDHA — regulations adjusted
B. Replacing SDHA — technology advanced
C. Researching SDHA — people concerned
D. Restricting SDHA — food industry panicked

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Warm sunlight streamed through the window while David was sitting at the kitchen table, trying hard to understand a famous literary classic. Flocks of clouds were floating high in the sky. Nearby, the big new apartment buildings stood along the road. The faint sound of cars could be beard. His mother was cutting tomatoes for their dinner as usual.
Suddenly, she said, “You know, the thing I want most is to make a really hot salsa(辣番茄酱)with fresh peppers from the garden.” She sighed. “That's what I miss most about Merida.” David looked up from his book in surprise. His mother had never talked like this about their old life before. He watched her carefully. She looked a little sad, but then she smiled at him and put the cut tomatoes into the cooking pot.
“But I've already known a lot about this new country, David,” she said. “First of all, I've found that there are different ways to make a salsa!” She showed him a packet of chili powder and they both laughed.
Watching his mother busy in the kitchen preparing dinner, David thought about what his mother had told him about her feelings, and he realized that he felt the same way about leaving.
Sure, it had been great for his father to get this good job, but it had also been hard. David missed his old home— especially the sun and the beach. And his mother missed Merida, too. She had loved working in her market garden, selling the fresh vegetables that she had grown herself and then coming home to cook up huge tasty meals for her family. David's stomach rumbled at the memories.
He thought about how different things were for them now, living in this large, grey apartment building where there was no garden and no friends coming to share their delicious meals. He sighed. At least they could still talk with his grandmother in Mexico over the computer every night after dinner—— Grandmother! Abuela!
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly David had an idea. A week later, a box arrived from Mexico.

第二节
One possible version:
Suddenly David had an idea. Why not turn to Abuela for help Seized by the increasing eagerness to contact his grandmother, he wolfed his supper once it was ready. Right after dinner, David raced to the computer before he had even had his favorite dessert, leaving his mother in curiosity. The moment he got through to his grandmother via the video chat, he lowered his voice whispering, “Abuela, I need your help!” After David poured out his idea, Abuela clapped her hands promising, “Excellent! You’ll receive what you want!” Beside himself with joy, David waved goodbye to Abuela, expectantly waiting for the package.
A week later, a box arrived from Mexico. Bubbling over with excitement, David invited his mother to open the box together. Unfolding before their eyes were a sealed package of dried peppers and a colorful packet of seeds. “That's what I miss most! A taste from HOME!” blurted out his mother, her lips curving into a broad beam and eyes glittering in amazement. Never had David seen his mother so cheerful in weeks. Moments later his mother was preparing a salsa using the peppers, chopping tomatoes and humming a merry tune. Outside the kitchen window, a big pot containing the seeds gleamed in the sunlight.
