It’s a truth universally acknowledged that kids are rarely fond of eating their greens. But fruits and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy diet, which makes parents come up with creative solutions to get their children to happily eat them. That’s how food artist Sarah Beach came up with an idea — turn these ingredients into characters, animals, objects, and even inspiring messages. Her delicious creations, which she shares on her Facebook, are also a feast for the eyes.
Beach’s adventure in the world of food art began in 2018, with a simple rabbit design. Her food artworks not only put a smile on her children’s faces, but also keep them coming back for more. For the artist, food art has also provided her with a way to relax after work.
“Most of my designs start due to an event or idea I have. Then I look which fruits would work to make the design appealing to kids,” she said. “Colors are key.” Staying true to her purpose, Beach only uses fresh fruit and vegetables, along with seeds, nuts, and occasionally a touch of chocolate. Her art does not contain any food additives (添加剂).
Sticking to her values around food has made her notice the versatility (多功能) of each ingredient. For Beach, blueberries lend themselves perfectly for various elements. “I love working with blueberries. You can use them for eyes, skin, lines and background. Very healthy and delicious as well.”
Everyone has their own unique approach to creativity. Beach said, “I don’t really have a creative process. The most basic of my creations take only around 30 minutes to create, while some more complex designs take up to two hours. I get ideas when I listen to the news, read books or surf the Internet. I have a deep-seated inner passion to develop novel, useful, and sometimes beautiful solutions to kids’ healthy eating. So my fruit art illustrates my belief and passion.”

A. To develop a new hobby after work. B. To become famous on social media.
C. To experiment with different food ingredients. D. To get kids to eat fruits and vegetables happily.

A. She uses natural ingredients for her designs.
B. She integrates love and creativity into her food art.
C. She cooperates with social media for inspiration.
D. She is unwilling to concentrate on the creative process.
7. What is the best title of the text
A. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Benefiting Children
B. Practical Suggestions on Maintaining a Healthy Diet

Whether we are sitting down or standing up, still or moving, body posture influences our mood. Several studies have shown this link between physical posture and mood. Others have shown a relationship between our mood and our cognitive (认知的) performance, including memory, reasoning, learning, and the speed of reaction and processing of information.
So a logical question arises. Can body posture influence our cognitive performance
Previously, a New Zealand team (University of Auckland) carried out an experiment on posture when we walk, especially in the street. The team had found a very clear influence of our posture on our mood and confidence. It appears that walking with a hunched back, bowed head and motionless arms have a negative influence on our mental state.
Indeed, the researchers found that the simple act of straightening up, standing up straight, with your head held high, and gazing (注视) forward gives us a serious boost of confidence. Not only does our spontaneous (自发的) posture have a psychological effect, but by correcting it, it is possible to bring about improvement in the long term.
In the other study, this time carried out by an Austrian team (Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg), researchers observed the same phenomenon, this time in a sitting position. Young adults were invited to participate in tests presented as intended to assess their ability to concentrate. In fact, the researchers had them sit in different postures-from upright to very slumped-in order to note their influences on mood and cognition.
A first observation indicates that “sitting upright” is associated with a better overall mood. It is also found to have a positive influence on the speed of processing information and completing tasks, although the test pass rate does not vary significantly with posture.
Finally, and surprisingly enough, blood pressure is a little more favorable in an upright position. To further complete the list of benefits of sitting upright, we will add that it is widely recommended for protecting the back in case of work that requires sitting for a long time.
8. Why does the writer introduce the studies at the beginning
A. To explain what cognitive performance is.
B. To emphasize the importance of body posture.
C. To prove the results of those studies are inaccurate.
D. To raise a new question to be studied and solved.
9. What does the underlined word “hunched” mean in paragraph 3
A. Straight. B. Bent. C. Loose. D. Solid.
10. What does the study conducted by the New Zealand team indicate
A. Posture influences our mental state. B. Straightening up has a negative effect.
C. Gazing upward builds up confidence. D. Walking posture is hard to adjust.
11. What can we learn about sitting upright
A. It requires sitting for a long time. B. It helps improve the test pass rate.
C. It has mental and physical benefits. D. It increases the blood pressure.
D
With more than half the country located below sea level, the Netherlands has a history of flooding. Now climate change has brought more severe weather, heavy rainfall, and even drought to the area, forcing the city of Amsterdam to consider new ways to protect itself, and that’s where Resilio comes in.
The project Resilio builds innovative smart blue-green roofs throughout Amsterdam. Together with the local government, from the years 2018 to 2022 they installed (安装) specialized roofs in Amsterdam neighborhoods that are in the most danger of flood damage.
The roofs are similar to the concept of green roofs but a lot smarter. That’s because the roofs are made of many layers. The most important layer is the water remaining layer. This layer serves a double purpose. In times of heavy rainfall, it collects rainwater that would otherwise flood the streets, while in times of drought the water feeds the garden on the top layer.
It is this layer that differentiates blue-green roofs from regular green roofs. A study in the Journal of Environmental Management shows that blue-green roofs can collect up to 97 percent of extreme rain, as opposed to the about 12 percent that regular green roofs can collect.
What makes Resilio roofs so unique, however, are their smart systems. Multiple blue-green roofs are connected through a digital network, meaning the roofs can each be controlled individually, responding to the amount of water collected on that particular roof as needed.
Each roof also has a smart valve (阀门) that is connected to a computer system called the Decision Support System (DSS). The DSS networks with local weather forecasts to decide whether the valve on a particular roof should open, spilling water safely. and slowly into the sewer (下水道) system, or whether it should remain closed and collect the coming rain.
These are the innovations that make Resilio truly revolutionary. Blue-green roofs show that the solutions to the dangers that climate change brings need to be creative and must work on many levels.
12. What is the purpose of the Resilio project in Amsterdam
A. To study the effect of the blue-green roofs. B. To create gardens on the top of the buildings.
C. To install specialized roofs in neighborhoods. D. To promote creative solutions to climate change.
13. What does the author mainly show in paragraph 3
A. The widespread use of the blue-green roofs. B. The intelligence of the blue-green roofs.
C. The significance of water remaining layer. D. The new approach to collecting rainwater.
14. How does the author show the effectiveness of blue-green roofs in paragraph 4
A. By presenting reasons. B. By analyzing typical cases.
C. By quoting research findings. D. By comparing opinions.
15. What makes controlling the water level on each roof system possible
A. The government’s support. B. The smart networks in Resilio.
C. The convenient sewer system. D. The precise weather forecast.

Be curious.
Creativity at work is not limited only to what goes on in the workplace. If you want to be a creative and innovative individual, you need to broaden your horizons. ___18___ This can help you learn about as many fields of knowledge as you can. If creativity is all about having different perspectives and viewpoints, then it must make sense to hire people from different backgrounds and with different experiences. If you’re the boss, don’t simply hire people in your own image. If you populate your office with your clones and your company with like-minded people, creativity will suffer. A much better hiring policy is to try to create a team as diverse as possible. When it comes to discussions and coming up with new ideas, you will gain the rewards.
Surround yourself with inspiration.
Always be on the lookout for new and exciting material and decorate your workspace with whatever you find. ___20___ It’s up to you. One afternoon, Emma and I were walking home from school, chatting about our day. Emma, with her curious eyes shining, asked me about my friendship with Lucy. Without thinking, I said, “I only hung out with Lucy because she wanted me to, but I didn’t really want to be friends with her. She was kind of boring.”
Unluckily, I didn’t know Lucy was nearby. When I looked up, she was right there, having heard everything. Her face turned pale, and her eyes got big with surprise. She didn’t say anything and ran off. Emma and I just stood there, feeling bad. I knew I should go after Lucy and say sorry, but I was too shocked to move. Emma’s face turned red too. We walked home without talking, and it felt like our steps were getting heavier
The next days were hard. I felt really bad about what I said and wanted to fix things with Lucy. I needed to say sorry. But what should I say Even though I didn’t mean to, I hurt Lucy’s feelings. Every time I saw her at school, I looked away quickly.
Then, something interesting happened in our speaking class. On Tuesday, Ms. Julia said we would do pre-class speeches. She had written our topics on small pieces of paper and put them in a box. We had to pick one without knowing what it was. I was a bit nervous. When I reached into the box, I pulled out a paper that said, “Tell your most embarrassing moment.” My heart was beating fast. It felt like I was given a chance to make things right
I spent the next few days practicing my speech, trying to find the right words to apologize to Lucy. I wanted to be sincere and show her I was sorry. When the day of the speech came, I was still nervous, but I knew it was important to face my mistake. I stood in front of the class, took a deep breath, and began to share my story, hoping it would help me and Lucy move forward.

Dear Jim,
Sorry to hear that you are puzzled about some Chinese gestures, which is common for the foreigners.
In China, some body language is identical to yours, while some differs from yours. For example, we usually greet our guests by shaking hands. Some may favour a nod or smile, but try to avoid hugging, especially kissing on the cheek. In addition, we nod our heads to approve and shake our heads to say “no”. Of course, it is to show great respect for others that we bow.
I hope the information above will help you adjust yourself to your life in China and enjoy yourself forever.
Yours,
Li Hua

Knowing what I had to say I calmed myself down and walked to the stage. I started speaking, even though my voice was a little shaky. I talked about how I’d acted without thinking and how sorry I was for hurting someone. When I finished my speech, I was sweating, and I wasn’t sure what the others would do. But they clapped for my honesty. Mrs. Julia even said I was brave for saying sorry in front of everyone. I went back to my seat and saw Lucy looking at me with tears in her eyes.
That day marked a turning point. Lucy and I didn’t talk about what had happened, but we started to talk and laugh together again, as if she had silently forgiven me. I wasn’t proud of what I did in that speech class; instead, I was grateful for the experience. It taught me some important lessons that I’ve kept with me: talking badly about others can lead to regret, and true friendships need to be built on honesty and openness.
