Why did ancient Chinese emperors call themselves zhen (朕) or guaren (寡人)
Research shows that the word zhen was a first-person pronoun (代词) in the past. Before the Qin Dynasty, it meant “I” or “me” and everyone from farmers to emperor could use it. The word can be found in books like Li Sao (The Lament) and Shi Jing (The Book of Songs).
However, when the state of Qin defeated all the other six states and unified (统一) China, Qinshihuang, the first emperor in Chinese history, changed how this word could be used. He made it a rule that zhen could only be used by the emperor himself. Since (自从) then, the word has been reserved (保留) only for emperors.
Chinese emperors also called themselves guaren. In ancient China, emperors took themselves as the “Sons of Heaven”, and believed they had a “Mandate of Heaven (天命)” to rule. However, if the “Son of Heaven” had poor morals (德行), they would lose the mandate. So, the emperor used the term guaren or guade zhiren (寡德之人), meaning “a person who doesn’t have morality”. In this way, they could show their modesty (谦虚). In Chinese culture, people should not talk proudly about their own abilities and beliefs. Modesty is seen as a virtue (美德). Ancient emperors hoped to win people’s hearts by calling themselves guaren.
However, historical records show that guaren lost its popularity after the Tang Dynasty. The emperors of the following dynasties used zhen more often.

A new and exciting way of doing weather forecasts is here! China’s television station now uses high-tech simulations (虚拟) to create realistic scenes in the studio. In a recent video about Super Typhoon Yagi, people watched as strong winds blew the weather reporter’s umbrella away and a “tree” was uprooted. This new way of forecasting weather helps people understand how serious storms can be.
China Media Group Mobile made this video to warn people about the dangers of Super Typhoon Yagi and to tell them how to stay safe. But people were surprised by how real the video looked.
The weather reporter started by talking about the weather. Then, she moved to a street with heavy winds and rain, created by extended (拓展) reality (XR) technology. XR is a group of technologies that includes augmented (增强) reality (AR), virtual (虚拟) reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR).
The video showed different things that could happen during a typhoon, like trees falling and umbrellas blown away. It made people feel like they were really there, experiencing the typhoon.
With XR technology, the scenes looked real and helped people learn about the dangers of extreme (极端的) weather. Many people who watched the video said they loved the new way of doing weather forecasts because it helped them understand better.

During the Western Jin Dynasty (265-316), there was a man named Zhou Chu. He was very strong—stronger than any other man in the village. People were scared of him because he often bullied (欺负) villagers. At the time, there was a man-eating tiger and a deep-water monster living nearby. They often caused trouble for the village. People called them, along with Zhou, the “three evils” (“三害”).
One day, some villagers asked Zhou to help them kill the tiger and the monster. After three days of fighting, Zhou finally killed them and came back. But the villagers thought he was dead. They celebrated his death. After seeing this, Zhou realized how much he was hated and decided to make a change. He visited a wise man named Lu Yun. Lu told him, “If one realizes what is good in the morning, he can change his behavior in the evening. Just do what you think is right.” From then on, Zhou became a good person and stopped bullying other people.
In fact, it’s not easy for us to know our own mistakes, even when they are clear to others. It was good that Zhou was able to look at himself and make changes. As The Analects of Confucius (《论语》) says, the flaws (瑕疵) of a Junzi are like eclipses of the sun or moon (日食或月食). They can be seen by all—but when they are corrected, everyone looks up in admiration.

One day, he found his neighbor had candles, but the light couldn’t go through the wall. After thinking for a while, he had an idea. He dug a small hole in the wall in his house so that he could use the light from his neighbor’s house to read books. From that day on, he read books every night until the light went out. After some days, in his house there were no books for him to read. Then he went to a rich man's house and worked for him without asking for any money. Hearing this, the rich man thought that Kuang Heng was stupid (愚蠢的) but still asked, “You meant you would work for me for free. But why ” Kuang Heng replied, “Well, I only want to borrow your books to read. That’s enough.”
The rich man was deeply moved and he agreed. Kuang Heng read the books in the rich man’s house one by one. Finally, he became a great scholar (学者). If you are still worried about reading books, it’s necessary for you to learn from Kuang Heng.

In the morning, we went camping along a path in Green Natural Park. We were happy because it was a sunny day. We were expecting an enjoyable two-day holiday. On the way, we kept singing and making jokes.
However, in the afternoon, when we finished our picnic at one o’clock, it was dark and windy. Soon, there was a shower. Unluckily, none of us brought an umbrella. We ran about but we could find no shelter.
Twenty minutes passed and it was still raining. There were hours to go before we reached the campsite (野营地). It was even worse that our small compass (指南针) showed that we went in the wrong direction. We had lost our way!
We had to make a quick decision as it was raining heavily. Chris said we could set up a tent to shelter us from the rain, so Mary and Tom helped to set up the tent. Chris and I tried to make a fire to keep us warm. But we were unable to light the fire, as everything was wet. We finally succeeded though. We dried ourselves, chatted and waited inside the tent. At about five o’clock, it stopped raining. We decided to give up the camping trip because all of us had been very tired.
This camping trip may not be very successful but we know each other better. And the most important thing I’ve learned from this trip is the importance of team spirit.

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences (影响) health, intelligence and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of America. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems in this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, sometimes it is very hot and in other time it is very cold. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, the IQs of a group of students were very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQs were 10% lower. The wind can help people have higher intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold in these months. They might feel unhappy in cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-air-pressure days. There is a “good weather” for intelligence and health. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.
Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful, or unhappy today It may be the weather’s problem.

No one can change the weather. But if we read the signs around us correctly, we can tell how the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting. For many centuries and in all countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. Many people feel in their bones the coming of wet weather—they feel joints (关节). Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. It is probably because of the insects which they are hunting that they fly low. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle (闪烁), then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the morning just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in colour, rainy weather will probably come. Most of the above sayings have been made by the people who have used their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting.

No one can change the weather. Nobody can control the weather. But if we read correctly the signs (迹象) around us, we can tell what the more important changes in the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting.
For many centuries and in all countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. Many people feel in their bones the coming of wet weather, their joints (关节) hurt. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. They fly low probably because of the insects (昆虫) that they are looking for. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine, such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle (闪烁) clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the morning just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in color, then the following day will be fine. If a rainbow appears in the morning, rainy weather will probably come. Most of the above sayings have been made by the people who have used their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting.

Experiencing one day in London
So this was an English park. This was an English… summer I was shaking with cold! It didn’t see warm enough. Perhaps I should explain. I’m from Brisbane in Australia. But today I was visiting my family in Britain. And they were taking me out to enjoy London.
“What a fine, bright day!” my Aunt Jess said happily. I nodded and smiled politely. In Britain it’s not polite to disagree, especially about the weather. But inside I was thinking: It looks awful. Brisbane’s winter is warmer than British summer!
The day had started with the promise of sunshine. But, as our picnic went on, it turned darker. Storm clouds suddenly covered the sky. British people often describe their weather as “four seasons in one day”. But for me, one season was missing from that day: summer!
Aunt Jess said, “When I was young, the summers were much longer and sunnier. I don’t remember a single bad summer’s day in the 60s!” Weather records show that she was wrong. But again I did not disagree. My cousin Jane said, “Maybe we will have a white Christmas this year.” That would be wonderful, but I doubted (怀疑) it. After all, it has only snowed at Christmas five times in the last fifty years.
Suddenly it turned windy. A heavy rain began to fall. We ran to hide from the rain. But my “summer” dress still got very wet. As I watched the rain beating down, I began to day dream. I dreamed about long, hot summer days in Brisbane.
“Well,” said Aunt Jess, “we had a few good hours. And at least, the weather gives us something to talk about…” I smiled politely once more, but had a secret thought. Yes, let’s talk about my English relatives moving Australia!

Your mom tells you to put on your hat and gloves. But as the cold winter season gets closer, it’s so cold that even mom’s advice does not work.
That means it’s time to put on your qiuku! This is a kind of “thermal underwear (保暖内衣)” or long underpants that keep people warm in the coldest months of the year.
In Western countries, qiuku is usually known as long johns, but they aren’t popular. Long johns in the US are usually two pieces, a long-sleeved (长袖的) shirt and long pants, worn under other clothing or sometimes even used as pajamas (睡衣).
Long johns first appeared in England during the 17th century. We call them long johns because the US boxer John L. Sullivan wore them while he boxed. But this is not a historical fact.
In the US, it gets quite cold and snowy in many places. And while parents often push kids to wear more clothes and long underwear, it’s very special when young people actually (实际上) put them on.
Part of the reason might be because it’s not very fashionable (时尚的) and another reason might be because people don’t spend much time outside during the cold months. So they just deal with the freezing (冰冻的) temperatures when they have to leave the warm building. But in their parents’ eyes, staying warm is more important than looking nice.
