When I was a boy, I disliked the feeling of “being a stranger” if my family went on holiday to another country.
At the age of seven, we went to visit a family friend in France. I had been practicing my French and was excited to use it. I spoke the first French words in a bakery in Paris. Despite a carefully prepared request, I was not ready for the rapid fire response. I had no idea what the sales girl said! I was so upset and knew if I wanted to get better, I would have to put in more efforts.
I started studying Chinese after my trip to China and I studied at Beijing Normal University in the late 1990s. I knew the language would help me to understand China better.
Like Chinese, my motivation to study Russian came from my interest in the country’s history, culture and music. Although I studied languages before joining the foreign office, I hoped that one day I would work internationally.
As a native English speaker, I didn’t expect people to understand me while traveling the world. I wanted to make efforts to understand others through their languages.
Learning a language also improves how you express yourself. When you have limited vocabulary, you have to creatively communicate your messages and meanings. This can also benefit communication skills in your first language. You’ll become more aware of the words you use and how you want people to respond.
Being able to speak other languages gives you another dimension. Not necessarily in terms of personality, but in your ability to have richer experiences with a broader mind.
24.What upset the author in the bakery
A.He didn’t meet his friend.
B.He couldn’t speak French.
C.He didn’t prepare the request.
D.He had no idea of the girl’s words.
25.Why did the author study Russian
A.To live in Russia.
B.To travel the world.
C.To join the foreign office.
D.To learn more about Russia.
26.How many languages can the author speak
A.One B.Two
C.Three D.four
27.What does the author intend to tell us
A.Ways of learning foreign languages.
B.Benefits of learning foreign languages.
C.Efforts needed to speak a language well.
D.Different languages in different countries.
C
If you speak more than one language, you may have had the experiences of them mixed in your sleep. But how and why do our brains come up with these multilingual (多语言的) dreams and could they have an impact on our real-life language skills
To understand the relationship between sleep and language, let’s start with just one language: your own. You may think you mastered your native language long ago, but you are actually still endlessly updating it. Even adults still learn about one new word every two days in their mother tongue.
It’s during sleep that the integration (整合) of old and new knowledge happens. During the day, our hippocampus, which specializes in absorbing information quickly, takes in new words. At night, it passes the new information on to other parts of the brain, where it can be stored and connected to other relevant information.
What we do know is that aside from processing daytime information, our brain can also learn new words while asleep. Matthieu Koroma, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Liège in Belgium, conducted a number of studies of how and when we deal with language in our sleep. “Basically, the message is that you are able to learn words in other languages during sleep, even new languages you never heard before, but you do it in a very different way than when you are awake,” he says.
Does all this mean we can easily learn a language in our sleep, as long as we play a language lesson all night long Not necessarily. “It might actually backfire, by disturbing your rest,” Koroma says. He also points out that in the study, people learned the words much faster when they were awake than when they were asleep: “It’s more effective when you’re awake. Wakefulness is good for learning, and sleep is more to replay, not for new language getting,” Koroma adds. “It’s an interactive process, which means that you learn during the day, and during sleep you process this information, build up some of your memories, and try to put it in new contexts.”
Koroma further explains the practical significance of his research. “The best way to do it is probably to learn a new language before going to sleep, and then play some of the words you just heard, while being asleep,” says Koroma. “Here the results are mostly that if you play them quietly enough, it will improve your learning abilities. But if you play it too loudly, it will actually bring down you learning ability. So there is some fine-tuning.”
28.Matthieu Koroma’s research shows that ______.
A.we can learn new languages as effectively during sleep as when awake
B.playing a language lesson all night long is the best way to learn a language
C.we can learn words in other languages during sleep, but in a different way
D.sleep is more important than wakefulness for new language getting
29.What does the author mean by “it might actually backfire” in Paragraph 5
A.Playing a language lesson all night long may have a negative effect.
B.Learning a new language during sleep is useless.
C.It is better to learn a language when awake.
D.Sleep is not suitable for learning new languages.
30.What is Matthieu Koroma’s attitude towards learning a language during sleep
A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Indifferent. D.Careful.
31.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The relationship between sleep and multilingual dreams.
B.How the brain processes language during sleep and its effects.
C.The effective ways of learning a new languages during sleep.
D.The role of the hippocampus in language learning.

Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources (资源).
Professor Beilock and another researcher Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored (得分) an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved (提高) their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated (不相关的) to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B-for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, and who’d done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and grades. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
32.What do the students start worrying about before an exam
A.Whether they can pass the exams.
B.What other students do during the test.
C.Whether they have remembered the materials.
D.What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
33.What is the solution developed by researchers
A.Making the students focused on the test.
B.Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
C.Having the students write about their worries about the test.
D.Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test.
34.According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test ____________.
A.became less nervous before the test
B.were better at controlling their feelings
C.did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D.did better than those who wrote about their feelings
35.We can infer from the last paragraph that ____________.
A.writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit
B.we can only write about our worries right before an exam
C.the best place to write about our worries is in the test room
D.it doesn’t matter where we write about our worries before an exam

Seeing the world doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are some tips you can follow to bring your travel costs down. 36 . Prepare for your trip

Baggage fees have been known to take large bites out of travel budgets.

C.It’s far from necessary if you want to save money.
D.Many destinations shine their brightest without the noise.

Brianna Kemp’s father had to move her entire family from Chicago to a small town in Maryland after his business went bankrupt. He didn’t lose faith in life, though, and decided to start his family’s new life there.
Along with the move came a new school for Brianna, who was 14 years old. She had a difficult time accepting the move, as she was a popular cheerleader at her school in Chicago. She also had a good set of friends, and she didn’t exactly like meeting new people.
When it was time to go to school, her father drove her there to wish her well. “Good luck, sweetheart. I know this is going to be difficult for you, but you can do it. I know you can!” he said, giving her a kiss on the forehead.
“Thanks, Dad,” Brianna said quietly before leaving the car. While she was sad, Brianna didn’t want her dad to worry even more, so she put on a brave smile and waved before her father drove away.
When she got to the school, she was greeted by the school secretary, Mrs. Keppler. “Hello, welcome to Chester Middle School! I’m going to give you a quick tour of the school,” she said.
“Thank you,” Brianna responded shyly and nervously.
Mrs. Keppler showed Brianna around, pointing her to the cafeteria, the school auditorium, and the gym. They also passed through the art and music rooms, the science laboratories, and the kitchen.
Finally, Brianna was led to the classroom and started her suffering first school day. Faced up with so many new faces, she made a brief self-introduction, still nervous. Then she was guided to sit in the back row alone. During the breaks, all the students seemed so familiar with each other. Brianna found it hard to start a conversation with any one of them, as they were always busy with their own friends. She felt like she was an outsider and didn’t belong. What a suffering the first school day was! So were the following weeks.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
When the day was finally over, Brianna shared her day with her father.

M: Hello, boys and girls! Today I will briefly introduce the United Kingdom from many different aspects. First, it is one of the most interesting places in the world to visit, having about 6,400 scenic spots. These include museums and galleries like the National Gallery and British Museum, historical monuments like the Tower of London and Windsor Castle, and so on. Secondly, the United Kingdom contains some of the world’s best institutes of higher education, such as the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Third, the United Kingdom has had a great influence on the development of cinema and music. Famous films, include the Harry Potter, Star Wars and James Bond series, originated here. Although the James Bond films are made by American studios, they use British source material, locations, actors and film crews. Moreover, London remains one of the major classical music centres of the world. The UK was also, along with the US, one of the two main contributors to the development of rock music. Lastly, a number of major sports originated in the United Kingdom, including football, rugby, cricket and golf.

根据第四段中“Matthieu Koroma, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Liège in Belgium, conducted a number of studies of how and when we deal with language in our sleep. “Basically, the message is that you are able to learn words in other languages during sleep, even new languages you never heard before, but you do it in a very different way than when you are awake,” he says.(比利时里昂热大学的博士后研究员Matthieu Koroma对我们在睡眠中如何以及何时处理语言进行了大量研究。他说:‘基本上,这个信息是说你可以在睡眠中学习其他语言的单词,甚至是从未听过的全新语言,但你学习的方式与清醒完全不同,’他说。)”可知,Matthieu Koroma的研究表明我们可以在睡眠期间用其他语言学习单词,但是以不同的方式学习,故选C。
29.词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Does all this mean we can easily learn a language in our sleep, as long as we play a language lesson all night long Not necessarily. “It might actually backfire, by disturbing your rest,” Koroma says.(这是否意味着我们可以整夜播放语言课程,在睡眠中很容易学习语言?未必。‘It might actually backfire,因为打扰你的休息,’Koroma说)”可知,Koroma认为整夜播放语言课程,未必能使我们在睡眠中很容易学习语言,相反这会打扰我们的睡眠,即产生负面影响;由此可知,作者在第五段中说“it might actually backfire”意思是“整夜播放语言课程可能会产生负面影响”故选A。
根据第五段中“Does all this mean we can easily learn a language in our sleep, as long as we play a language lesson all night long Not necessarily. “It might actually backfire, by disturbing your rest,” Koroma says. (这是否意味着我们可以整夜播放语言课程,在睡眠中很容易学习语言?未必。‘它实际上可能适得其反,因为打扰你的休息,’Koroma说)”以及最后一段中“ “The best way to do it is probably to learn a new language before going to sleep, and then play some of the words you just heard, while being asleep,” says Koroma. “Here the results are mostly that if you play them quietly enough, it will improve your learning abilities. But if you play it too loudly, it will actually bring down you learning ability. So there is some fine-tuning.”(‘最好的方法可能是在睡觉前学习一门新语言,然后在睡觉时播放一些你刚刚听到的单词,’科罗马说。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“If you speak more than one language, you may have had the experiences of them mixed in your sleep. But how and why do our brains come up with these multilingual (多语言的) dreams and could they have an impact on our real-life language skills (如果你说多种语言,那么你的睡眠中可能会经历它们的经历。但是,我们的大脑如何以及为什么要提出这些多语言梦,它们会对我们的现实生活语言技能产生影响吗?)”和第二段中“To understand the relationship between sleep and language, let’s start with just one language: your own.(要了解睡眠与语言之间的关系,让我们从一种语言开始:你自己。)” 故选A。

根据倒数第三段中的“Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated (不相关的) to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B-for those who did not. (接下来,研究人员在生物课上选用了年龄较小的学生。他们在期末考试之前告诉他们要么写下自己的感受,要么想一些与考试无关的事情。Beilock教授说写出自己焦虑的学生得到了B+的平均分,而没写的学生得到了B-的平均分)”可知,根据Beilock教授的研究,相比于写下自己感受的学生,那些思考与考试无关事情的学生表现更差。故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance. (但如果学生没有机会在考试前立即写下他们的担忧呢?Beilock教授说,学生可以在家里或图书馆自己尝试这样做,仍然可以提高他们的成绩。)”可推知,Beilock教授认为,学生可以在考试前任何地点写下他们的担忧,以此来提高成绩。即考试前写下担忧的地点并不重要。故选D。
