Traveling seemed like falsehood to me. I grew tired of backpackers expressing too much praise about how petting a baby elephant in Thailand “transformed” them. Globe-traveling to me held no more promise than finding a few bills in the pocket of an old coat. I needed something deeper than an Eat, Play, Love moment.
One day, Vasilis, my Greek best friend, reminded me of our decade-old promise: After our final exams, I would visit his hometown in Athens. Maybe, it was time to make good on that promise. I finally boarded the plane. Vasilis picked me up at the airport. I smiled, thinking how improbable this moment seemed all those years ago.
The decade-long wait proved to be well worth it. Every step through the ancient streets revealed new wonders. However, none of them truly mattered. What would forever alter my perception of travel was a chance encounter with a local.
Vasilis and I were wandering Athens when a special sound caught our attention — a rhythmic clinking disturbing the quietness of the residential street. Curiously, we followed the sound to a humble workshop. Inside, a welder (焊工) gave no mind to our presence behind him. He wore no flashy protective suit — this was just another day for him, another dance with fire and metal that had become second nature. Under the sunshade, his orange cat rested in the comforting warmth.
As the man continued welding, I felt a bit of envy. I envied his peace and contentment. I admired the simplicity he embodied. I imagined the welder happy, finding fulfillment in his craft and returning to his loving family. The moment moved me to tears. Leaving the workshop, rain blending with tears, I realized how easily life’s poetry could pass unnoticed.
Home again in Montreal, I stop simply pursuing better things, better experiences and better people that are never grasped. I realize the real journey is inward — to appreciate life’s ordinary magic. That surely beats petting any baby elephant. I may not have returned home “transformed”, but I’ll always think of the welder and his cat.

Good sportsmanship is the practice of engaging in sports with a spirit of fairness, respect, and good manners, regardless of the competitive pressure. It represents the spirits of playing by the rules, honoring both teammates and opponents, and exhibiting grace whether in victory or defeat. The significance of good sportsmanship extends far beyond the playing field. It is vital for maintaining the spirits and integrity of sports.
Athletes who exemplify good sportsmanship help to create a competitive but friendly environment that enhances the enjoyment of the game for everyone involved: players, coaches, officials, and so on. Firstly, good sportsmanship promotes a positive atmosphere that encourages everyone to participate and give their best. It fosters a sense of community and teamwork, which is crucial for collective success in team sports. When athletes display respect and fairness, it helps to build trust and strengthens relationships among team members, which can translate into better performance and more cohesive play. Secondly, good sportsmanship serves as a model for younger athletes, who look up to higher-level players as role models. The behavior exhibited by these role models can significantly influence the attitudes and actions of younger participants towards the sport and competition in general. By practicing good sportsmanship, seasoned athletes set a standard for upcoming generations, teaching them that success is not just about winning but about how you play the game. Moreover, good sportsmanship is essential for the reputation and sustainability of sports.
Negative behavior or unsportsmanlike conduct can damage the public awareness of a sport and can lead to decreased participation rates, sponsorship, and support.
In contrast, sports characterized by high levels of sportsmanship are more likely to be viewed positively, attracting more players and audiences, and increasing the overall reach and impact of the sport. In this way, good sportsmanship not only enhances personal and team success but also upholds the dignity and appeal of sports as a whole. It ensures that sports remain a valuable tool for teaching important life skills such as respect and teamwork.

A.To tell a common phenomenon.
B.To introduce a clear comparison.
C.To criticize bad behavior in sports.
D.To warn us of unsportsmanlike conduct.

For centuries, Garifuna (加里富纳的) people, also known as Garinagu in their native language, have kept the culture’s oral history alive through their ancestors’ native language. But decades of modernization, casual native-language training in Garifuna schools, intermarriage between cultures, and the lack of consideration of language transmission by young people, collectively led to Garifuna being listed on the UNESCO Atlas of Endangered Languages in 2001.
The threat of language extinction isn’t new. Some linguists estimate a language dies every two weeks. But there are ways to save at-risk languages as well. The key is that the language needs to be thought of less as preserved, but indeed part of their present and future. “Modern Garifuna people need the actual language to grasp their ancestors’ past. Without language, culture will never be whole. If you’re losing your language, you’re losing your roots, which will destroy all the ancestors have worked on,” Alvin Laredo, a Garifuna tour guide, says.
Elements of the Garifuna culture include music, dance and language. In 2001, Garifuna musicians and cultural activists created a plan: Create irresistible songs sung entirely in Garifuna to call on young Garinagu to accept the culture and learn the language. Palacio, a leader in the cultural renaissance, gathered Garifuna musicians across Central America to form the Garifuna Collective band in 2007. Multiple world performances and international music awards later, the band put Garifuna on the international map and lit a cultural flame for Garifuna worldwide. Another set of musicians was inspired by Palacio’s message. They helped elementary and high schools in Belize teach the Garifuna culture and language through music.
The Garifuna language revival does have a new and welcome boost (推动力): Belize’s Garifuna Tourism Trail, which formally launched in March 2022. Of course, tourism alone won’t save a language, but tourism can provide one effective language-retention (语言保持) motivation: income. More economic opportunities and pride in their cultural identity could help motivate young Garinagu to continue learning the language. Will music save the Garifuna language Time will tell. This kind of revival is a long, multi-generational road.
32.What is the purpose of paragraph 1

B.To explain the reasons for Garifuna being endangered.
C.To encourage people to speak their native languages.
D.To prove the influence of modernization on languages.
33.What is crucial for the survival of the Garifuna language
A.Integrating it into people’s daily lives.
B.Focusing only on teaching it in schools.
C.Relying on the efforts of linguists to save it.
D.Considering it as something to be preserved.
34.What did the Garifuna Collective band do
A.They adapted historical stories for popular songs.
B.They taught local students Garifuna through music.
C.They set up a musical club to promote Garifuna music.
D.They spread Garifuna culture to the world by their performances.
35.What can we infer from paragraph 4
A.Tourism is a major source of local income.
B.Language can help people shape the cultural identity.
C.Revival efforts ensure the language’s survival in years.
D.Economy plays a supportive role in language development.

Copenhagen is a beautiful city that attracts a large number of tourists, especially during the summer. While tourism is great for the economy, it also has an impact on environment. In order to change that, tourists can participate in green activities like picking up litter, using public transport, or biking around the city. 36
This project is called CopenPay and it is being trialed this summer. 37 The project was introduced by Copenhagen’s official tourism organization to get tourists to act more sustainably. While many tourists express the desire for eco-friendly travel, very few have changed their behavior.
38 It will reward green actions including taking part in clean-ups or volunteering at an urban farm. The project is trust-based, so it is unlikely that the venues will ask for proof but some may request a photo of you doing a green activity or a train ticket.
There are 24 participants in the pilot program, including museums and urban experiences for tourists to participate in. There are several places offering free ice cream or coffee for taking public transport. Visitors to the National Gallery who bring plastic waste can participate in a workshop to turn the trash into a piece of art. 39 There are free tours at the Cisternerne underground art hall, if you walk or bike to the venue.
Maybe none of these small activities will make a huge impact on the environment. However, small things do make a difference. 40 Besides, tourists can bring an important souvenir home from their vacation.
A.They will change people’s attitudes.
B.Few tourists show interest in this project.
C.Tourists can choose to take public transport.
D.CopenPay hopes to help bridge the gap in this way.
E.It was designed to help reduce the environmental costs.
F.They will be rewarded with food or souvenirs after doing these.
G.Tourists can help care for the gardens at a museum for free admission.

21 years after graduating from college, I became a high school English teacher. During my first term as an educator, the kids taught me about high school and life, and what was important to them. It had been 25 years since I graduated from high school, so I had a lot to learn. I listened, took notes, and asked many questions.
My students had more hardship (艰难) than what I had been familiar with at their age. Understanding their situations was not easy, but loving them came easily.
When my second term began, my classroom welcomed a group of new students, including one young man who lit up the space every time he passed through the door. David stood tall at six feet and four inches. His strong body gave him the appearance of a grown man. His wide smile and bright eyes charmed every person in the classroom.
He was smart, too. David seemed to know the answers to everything. For weeks, he controlled the atmosphere of my class. He was very active. He led group discussions, encouraged others to participate, and earned the highest grades. I was so impressed by him and his abilities that I didn’t ask many questions. I didn’t really take time to get to know him as I had to be with my first-term students.
A few weeks passed, and we entered the month of February. David walked quietly into the classroom. His usual smile disappeared, and he looked cold. I asked if he was okay, but he didn’t respond. I encouraged him to participate, but he refused. He was just silent and emotionless. I was puzzled, embarrassed, upset and also angry about his behavior in class.
Finally, I called another student to my office. I had noticed him often walking in the hallways with David. “Do you know what’s wrong with David ” I asked. He replied, “Oh, Mrs Green, his mom’s birthday is coming, but she was just found to have cancer.”

根据第一段“Traveling seemed like falsehood to me. I grew tired of backpackers expressing too much praise about how petting a baby elephant in Thailand “transformed” them.(旅行对我来说就像是谎言。我已经厌倦了背包客们对在泰国抚摸小象如何“改变”了他们的赞不绝口)”可知,作者对旅行者过度赞美旅行带来的好处感到厌烦。故选D。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段“One day, Vasilis, my Greek best friend, reminded me of our decade-old promise: After our final exams, I would visit his hometown in Athens. Maybe, it was time to make good on that promise. I finally boarded the plane. Vasilis picked me up at the airport. I smiled, thinking how improbable this moment seemed all those years ago.(一天,我最好的希腊朋友瓦西里斯让我想起了我们十年前的约定:期末考试结束后,我要去他在雅典的家乡看看。也许,是时候兑现这个承诺了。我终于上了飞机。瓦西里斯去机场接我。我笑了,想着多年前这一刻是多么不可思议)”可知,作者是为了兑现承诺而去希腊与朋友见面。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“I envied his peace and contentment. I admired the simplicity he embodied. I imagined the welder happy, finding fulfillment in his craft (手艺) and returning to his loving family. The moment moved me to tears. Leaving the workshop, rain blending with tears, I realized how easily life’s poetry could pass unnoticed.(我羡慕他的平静和满足。 故选A。
根据最后一段“Home again in Montreal, I stop simply pursuing better things, better experiences and better people that are never grasped. I realize the real journey is inward — to appreciate life’s ordinary magic. That surely beats petting any baby elephant. I may not have returned home “transformed”, but I’ll always think of the welder and his cat.(回到蒙特利尔的家,我不再简单地追求更好的事物、更好的经历和更好的人,而这些都是永远无法抓住的。我意识到真正的旅程是向内的——去欣赏生活平凡的魔力。这肯定比抚摸小象要好。也许我回家时并没有“焕然一新的”,但我总会想起那个焊工和他的猫)”结合文章讲述了希腊之旅让作者领悟到人生之旅的真谛是平凡,故作者想要告诉我们的是:平凡造就非凡。故选C。

30.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Negative behavior or unsportsmanlike conduct can damage the public awareness of a sport and can lead to decreased participation rates, sponsorship, and support.”(负面行为或非体育行为可能会损害公众对一项运动的认知,并可能导致参与率、赞助和支持的减少。)以及最后一段“ In contrast, sports characterized by high levels of sportsmanship are more likely to be viewed positively, attracting more players and audiences, and increasing the overall reach and impact of the sport.”(相比之下,具有良好体育精神特征的运动更有可能被视为积极的,吸引更多的运动员和观众,并增加运动的总体影响力和影响力。)”

66.Hi Coward,
I’m sorry to know that you have trouble adapting yourself to senior high school.
However, the situation is easy to change if you take my suggestions into consideration. First of all, why not communicate with your teacher face to face By doing this, your teacher will know your inner thoughts and help you solve this problem. What’s more, if I were you, I would be engaged in various kinds of activities held by class actively. More importantly, it would be a good idea if you made some friends with common interests. If you do this, you can share happiness and sadness with them and help you get to know them to get rid of loneliness at high school. I hope you will find these ideas useful, and fit in well with your new school.
