——世界首颗木制卫星升空
Recently, a satellite (卫星) made partly out of wood has been sent up into space for the first time ever. It’s amazing, right Let’s take a closer look together.
In the past, satellites have always been made of metal (金属). But now, scientists in Japan are testing the idea of a wooden satellite. And they call it “LignoSat” (“Ligno” means “wood” in Latin).
The idea of using wood for satellites may sound strange, but there are some good reasons to try it. Wood is cheap and it doesn’t pollute the environment. And there’s no water or oxygen (氧气) in space to break it. So wood is harder there than on Earth.
The idea was simple, but it was hard to bring it to life. Firstly, the team had to find out what kind of wood would work best. After eight months’ test, they chose honoki wood. This wood is light and doesn’t break easily. Then, to make LignoSat, the team used a special woodworking way. The wooden pieces were carefully cut to fit together (组合到一起).
In November, LignoSat was sent to space. And in December, it will be put into orbit (轨道) around Earth. Over the next six months, scientists will check the wood. If the test works, wooden satellites could one day be used to help cut down on pollution. Satellites often burn up as they come back into Earth’s atmosphere (大气层). Burning metal satellites leave behind a cloud of pollution. But when wood burns, it only leaves water and CO2 behind.

——英语这样说,才更有礼貌,让你更有涵养。
Learning to be polite in a new language isn’t easy. Every language has special ways to show respect, and knowing how to use these rules can make a big difference.
One simple way to make your English sound more polite is to use modal verbs. You probably already know modal verbs like “could”, “would”, “might” and “shall”. While these verbs are used to talk about ability or possibility, they’re also a great way to make your English sound softer and more polite, especially when you are asking questions. For example, asking someone “Do you want to have dinner with me ” sounds direct. But if you use a modal verb — “Would you like to have dinner with me ” — it sounds much nicer!
Modal verbs are also used when you make requests. “Could you open the window, please ” sounds much softer than just “Open the window, please.”
Another way to sound more polite in English is to use the passive voice. This is useful in situations where it might be rude to directly point out someone’s actions or mistakes. For example, “The computer wasn’t turned off.” sounds nicer than “Bob forgot to turn off the computer.”
You can also use the past tense . For example, when you check into a hotel, the waiter might ask, “Did you need any help with your luggage ” or “She regrated that she didn’t ask him to stay.” Even though the past tense is usually used to describe things that have already happened, in this case, it’s a polite way to ask if you need help with your luggage.
These tips will help make your English sound more considerate (体贴的) and respectful!

—— 一条六尺巷,精神绽华光
An about 2-metre-wide alley, or “Liu Chi Xiang” in Chinese, now attracts a large number of visitors in Tongcheng, Anhui. There is an ancient story behind it.
During the Qing Dynasty, Minister Zhang Ying received a letter from his family back in his hometown of Tongcheng one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his family had fought with their neighbor Wu and his family over the boundary (分界线) between their houses. Since both families held strong power in Tongcheng, the disagreement was never solved. Zhang’s family wrote the letter hoping that Zhang could get the Wu family to give in.
However, Zhang replied with a poem saying, “Writing a letter from home, miles away, just for a wall. All that fuss (大发牢骚) over one meter or two. Look at the long Great Wall. Long gone is its builder Emperor Qinshihuang.”
His reply made the family members realize that the wall was only a temporary (暂时的) matter and that the close relationship with their neighbor was more important. So, they decided to move their wall back about one metre. In turn, the Wu family was deeply touched by this act and moved back another meter while building their wall. It created an about two-meter-wide narrow “alley” between the houses.
Today, Tongcheng has become a national historical and cultural city. And the alley vividly(生动地) reflects the values of tolerance and harmony (宽容与和谐) that are widely admired in China.

At the Badaling Great Wall in Beijing, getting food and water used to require a 50-minutewalk. But now, people can place orders on the phone, and drones will bring them over in a few minutes. The drones can also take away garbage from tourists on their return journeys. This is just one example of the wide use of drones in China. By June, over 1.87 million drones had received permission to work, reported China Daily. The need for professional drone pilots is rising. However, only about 225,000 people have the necessary licenses to fly them. This creates a shortage of almost 1 million licensed drone pilots in the country.
Since drones have been used in many areas, like farming, video filming and environmental protection, drone pilots can also work in various industries. The pay is good too. Some pilots are paid around 30,000 yuan per month, reported China Daily.
That is why more people are training to get drone licenses. At Xiaoxiang Yongxiang, a business offering such training in Hunan province, 400 to 500 people have graduated so far this year. Before, there were only about 200 each year.
To get a drone-flying license for distances under 500 meters, people need to take 44 hours of training. For longer distances, 56 hours are required. “I believe drones are the future” said Dong Jiamin, head of Xiaoxiang Yongxiang. The excitement around drones is related to the development of the low-altitude economy(低空经济), which is about activities happening in the airspace below 3,000 meters. By 2030, this part of the economy could reach 2,000 billion yuan in China. Other industries, such as Al and green energy, are also expected to grow with it.

——腊八节
The Laba Festival, falling on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, is a significant traditional festival in China with a long history and rich cultural meaning.
Dating back to ancient times, the festival has its roots in both religious and agricultural traditions. It is said that on this day, Sakyamuni (释迦摩尼), the founder of Buddhism, achieved enlightenment (觉悟) after years of practices. To memorize this great event, Buddhists began to hold grand ceremonies and provide porridge as an offering. Gradually, this religious practice spread among the general public and changed into a widely-celebrated folk festival.
From an agricultural view, it marked the end of the harvest year, and people would use the remaining grains to make porridge as a way to express thanks for the harvest and pray for good luck in the coming year.
The most well-known custom of the Laba Festival is making Laba porridge. People boil a variety of ingredients, including glutinous rice, red beans, mung beans, peanuts, and dates to make this delicious porridge. Each ingredient stands for something different, such as good health, success, and happiness. Families come together to prepare the porridge, sharing the joy of the season.
Another custom is making Laba garlic. People put garlic cloves(蒜瓣) in vinegar, and as time passes, the garlic turns green. This pickled garlic is often served with dumplings during the Spring Festival, adding a unique taste to the traditional dishes.
In a word, the Laba Festival is not only a time to enjoy delicious food but also a great chance to make family relationships stronger and keep our cultural traditions alive. It shows the wisdom and values that Chinese people have passed on from one generation to another.

—— Lucky eyes discover opportunities
Ten years ago, I set out to study luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at the right time, while others all ways experience ill luck. Over the years I talked to many people and watched their lives. I also had them take part in my experiments.
I once carried out a simple experiment to study why there were differences in their ability to discover opportunities. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photos were inside. I secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper. The message said, “Tell the researcher you have seen this and win $50.”
This message took up half of the page, but unlucky people often missed it and lucky people were more likely to discover it.
Unlucky people are just more nervous than lucky people. They are busy looking only for what they need and this stops them from noticing the unexpected. As a result, they miss out on opportunities.
Lucky people are often more relaxed and open. They can see everything in front of them, rather than just what they are looking for. My study shows that lucky people live by several principles(原则). Here are some of these principles:
*Listen to your instincts(直觉)—they are often right.
* Be open to new experiences and break your normal thought patterns.
* Spend some time each day remembering things that went well.
* See yourself as a lucky person before an important meeting or phone call.

——80后乘组归来,寄语少年梦
On January 8th, 2025, over 60 days after their space journey, the "Post-80s crew" of Shenzhou-18, Ye Guangfu, Li Cong, and Li Guangsu, met the media and public at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center. They shared their unforgettable experiences in space.
Ye Guangfu, the first Chinese astronaut with over one-year space stay, has been to the space station twice. Looking down from 400 km up, he was amazed by China's beauty. He described his return as "three changes"—feeling more at home, enjoying a better environment with more tasks, and taking on greater responsibilities as a commander.
For Li Cong, who flew into space for the first time, he made a wish list before the launch. After the rocket took off, all his dreams came true one by one, and he fully enjoyed the half-year space journey. Li Guangsu was deeply impressed by the space-breeding experiment. “Thinking back to the way the zebrafish(斑马鱼) were 'doing the backstroke' at the beginning, it was as if I saw myself when I was learning to get used to the weightless environment," said Li Guangsu.
During the mission, the Shenzhou-18 crew met with the Shenzhou-17 and Shenzhou-19 crews twice in space. This showed how China's space program passes on from one group to another. When Li Cong got the "baton(指挥棒)" from the Shenzhou-17 crew, he felt a strong sense of responsibility. And when it was time to give the "baton" to the Shenzhou-19 crew, he felt a bit disappointed.
In September 2024, Ye Guangfu connected with students from space and exchanged letters with them later, hoping to plant the seeds of space dreams in the hearts of teenagers.
The crew stayed in space for 192 days, had a "smooth" mission, and now, after recovery, they're ready for regular training.
