In some countries, like the UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada, there’s a special day for eating pancakes (薄饼). Pancake Day is celebrated before the start of Lent (大斋期). Lent is a time in the Christian calendar (历法), the 40 days before Easter (in March or April), when people don’t eat rich, fatty foods. In the past, people wanted to use all of their rich, fatty foods, like butter and eggs, before Lent started. So they put them in pancakes!
It’s Pancake Day today. In the UK, some people are having a race with pancakes! Some people dress up in strange costumes (服装). They look like housewives, cooks or even superheroes!
While in other countries, people are doing different things. Many people in Sweden are eating the semlor—a delicious, sweet cake with cream in it. In New Orleans in the USA, many people are eating the King Cake. This special yellow, green and purple cake has a small plastic (塑料) baby inside!
If you get the baby in your piece of cake, you’re the king for the day! In Austria, Germany and Poland, people are eating doughnuts, and in Estonia and Finland, people are eating special soups.

Last month, Jeff and his family had a special vacation. Jeff, his brother Jack and his sister Sandy paid for the vacation —Jeff made the money by washing cars for their neighbors, Jack made the money by working in a clothes store, and Sandy made the money by taking care of (照顾) babies for their neighbors. ①Miss Gu, 28, played the role of “Spring Festival . organizer” in her family for the first time this year. In the past, that was her parents’ job.
