Passage 5(2019天津C)
There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food, taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night.
The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of(不管) age, some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough. The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization, over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure(血压).
Why are so many people sleep-deprived Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as “lazy”. Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don't have much time to sleep, they only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you'll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert(专家) in sleep. He says, “Sleep is like a credit(信用卡) card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The more hours you don't sleep, the more hours you should sleep to “pay back” the hours on your ‘sleep credit card’.”
For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said,“Don't think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish(愚蠢的) idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more.”

Passage 6(2024红桥区一模C)
Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It's like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense(感觉) of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth's magnetic field(磁场), while humans can't. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

Passage 7【文化认同】(2024河西区一模C)
Weiqi is a board game for two players. To win, one player must use black or white playing pieces, named stones, to surround(包围) more areas.
The game was invented in China more than 2,500 years ago. It's one of the four Chinese traditional fine arts, along with playing guqin, writing and painting, so it owns a wide fan base in China. Now it is also popular in other parts of the world.
In Germany, the Berlin Weiqi Association(协会) has worked together with the China Cultural Center to host The China Cup, which sees about 50 to 100 players each year. As the cooperation(合作)between China and Germany deepens, many Weiqi training courses(培训课程) are offered and sometimes professional(专业的) players from China are invited to give talks to German Weiqi lovers.
Andreas Urban, the chairman(主席)of Berlin Weiqi Association, discovered a book on Weiqi accidentally. “I tried to understand the rules, but I couldn't.”said Urban. Schreiber, the vice chairman, was introduced to the game 16 years ago by a classmate. “The first time I played Weiqi, I even couldn't understand the rules,” he said. Passage 9(2024红桥区三模C)
Experts believe that there are more than 8 million restaurants in the world today. So it might surprise you to learn that restaurants, as we know them, have only existed for a few centuries. Before 1765, there were no restaurants. That is, there were no places that provided the restaurant experience. There was nowhere in which a waiter brought you food and drinks that you picked from a menu. In fact, there were no menus anywhere.
There were eating places travelers could go to centuries before that. The countryside was full of inns that would serve food. And there were taverns(酒馆) where one could get drinks. The rich could also eat special meals prepared by private cooks. But none of them could be called a “restaurant”.
A man called Boulanger changed that. In 1765, he opened a place in Paris that sold soups. On his sign he used the word “restaurant” to describe what he was selling. At that time, soups were considered something that could help “restore(恢复)” your health — in French the word “restore” is “restaurer” — so he called the soups “restaurants”. Soon, people started buying Boulanger’s soups even when they were not ill. And over time, people began to use the word “restaurant” to refer to a place selling soup rather than the soup itself. More “restaurants” opened in France, and people began to buy soups more often.
Later, restaurants in Paris began to serve other food besides soup. In the 1790s, menus started to appear. By the mid?1800s, there were many types of restaurants throughout the world. The United States offered coffee shops. Tea houses became popular throughout China. Paris created beautiful restaurants for the rich. Passage 9(2024和平区三模C)
Travel is like a box of chocolate — you never know what you're going to get, especially when you're using a blind box plane ticket.
Fan Zhihua, who enjoys going wherever she wants and whenever she wants, bought her first blind box plane ticket in March last year. The 29-year-old went to Zhangye, Gansu Province. It's a lesser-known destination, but it actually brings surprises.
When Fan arrived in Zhangye, she found that she was able to share a rented car with a few other people. This allowed the travelers to save money, since many of the area's tourist places are far apart from each other. So Fan found a group of easy-going young women to join. They went to some tourist places together, but everyone was free to choose their schedule! “The best part of the trip is this way of travelling, casual and romantic,” Fan said.
That wasn't her only gain. Before that, Fan thought most of the natural scenery(风景) she saw in photos was over-beautified. However, her trip to Dunhuang changed her mind.
After a couple of days in Zhangye, the group decided to leave for Dunhuang. Fan was never a big fan of making travel plans, so she just went along. Fan and her travel pals went on a camel ride, and as they entered the desert, she was amazed at her surroundings(周围环境). “I couldn't describe it in words. To be honest, I'm not a history lover, but when I was in the endless desert, it was amazing,” Fan said, “I felt like I had become Zhang Qian, travelling to Xiyu.”
Fan believes that life itself is a journey made up of long and short trips. “I think I was brought into this world to have as many experiences as possible and that I should make every day count,” she added.

Over 20,000 people climb Kilimanjaro every year. Some do it because the countryside is very interesting, going from rainforest to snow at the top.

Zhi Nong was born in a small town in Yunnan Province. When he was young, he moved to Kunming with his mother. Feeling like a caged(笼中的) bird in the big city, he was bored with the busy and noisy city life and looked forward to nature.
His chance soon came. In 1983, he helped shoot a documentary(拍摄纪录片) about birds. That experience led him to learn photography and take photos of flying birds.
In the 1980s, the Internet was not that popular in China and cameras were expensive. He managed to borrow a camera and threw himself into studying how to use it. During that time, the library became his favorite place where he first read some magazines about nature. It opened a door for him to connect with nature.
In 1992, a research program was organized to protect a type of unusual monkeys which only live in China. Usually the home of these monkeys has half-a-year-long winters. It created great challenges for Zhi Nong's work, but he never drew back. “I didn't see the monkeys in the wild until I went into the mountains the third time,” said Zhi Nong.
To be honest, I'm not a history lover, but when I was in the endless desert, it was amazing,” Fan said, “I felt like I had become Zhang Qian, travelling to Xiyu.”
