Focus on mental health
At some point in life, many people suffer a mental disturbance. While most people get over it, for others it doesn’t go away easily.
Oct 10 was World Mental Health Day. This year, the theme was “Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World”.
The World Health Organization says that about 20 percent of children and teenagers worldwide suffer from mental illness. It’s thought that the number of children and teenagers with mental illness around the world will increase by half by 2020. It will become one of the main causes of diseases, disabilities and even death.
In China, the picture isn’t bright, either. About 30 million Chinese children and teenagers under the age of 17, or 10 percent of children and teenagers in China, have a mental health challenge, reported China Daily.
The reason for mental problems among young people may be the increasing pressure in life.
The world is changing fast. Study and relationships have always caused stress, but today the stress is much higher than before, the WHO said.
The Young Foundation, a UK-based non-profit think tank, says that young people today have huge stresses at school. For instance, they experience bullying and body image issues. In a 2017 report, the foundation noted that the internet was a special source of stress. Online, young people often see “messages about perfection” and this causes the young “great uncertainty about their adult futures”, says the foundation.
Also, according to China Daily, Chinese people don’t seek help with their mental problems. They fear that others will think less of them if they admit that they are in trouble. Elaine Peng, a US mental health educator, makes a similar point. She thinks that many Chinese people are ashamed of their mental problems. Peng told Xinhua that mental illness “is taboo in many Chinese families”.
In the UK, over three-quarters of young people believe their mental health problems have a social stigma. YouGov, a UK-based data company, reported in 2017 that a quarter of young UK people wouldn’t ask for help if they developed a mental problem.
Young people who don’t seek help for their condition may be creating problems for themselves in the future. Jagannath Lamichhane, a mental health expert in Nepal, warned that, “If we hide our mental health, it may remain a problem forever.”
“My message for young people is, if you feel something is wrong within you—seek help,” he told NPR.

Derek Redmond
It was the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992; the semi-final of the 400 metres. The sun was shining and the crowd were ready for a great race. British athlete Derek Redmond was a top runner: he had a very good chance of winning a medal.
The race began. At first, Derek was running well. Then, after about 150 metres, he felt a pain in his leg. He fell down on one knee. He had a bad injury and couldn’t carry on. The other runners went past him and finished the race.
After about five seconds, Derek got up and started to run again, on one leg only. Some organizers tried to stop him but he kept going. The crowd stood up and started to clap. Then another man came onto the track—Derek’s father, Jim. His father put his arm around him and said, “Derek, you don’t have to do this.” Derek replied, “Yes, I do. I have to finish.” And so together they walked the last 50 metres and crossed the line.
When he finally crossed the line, Derek was crying and 60,000 people were cheering him. Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner

Whirrr. The deafening sound of a power washer echoed in the neighborhood. Earlier, my dad had bought a power washer—and we were finally going to get our deck clean. After years of using a brush, we now had a high-power, high-pressure washer: a little square machine that sprayed out a strong stream of water.
My dad took the first shift, and washed our upper deck. I watched in amazement as the washer simply left clean wood—exactly the color of the paint originally. “Wow, our deck sure got dirty this year,” I thought. However, that was exactly why we were cleaning—so that we could have sparkling floors outside once again. The machine hummed along, and I decided to change before I had to start cleaning. I put on some light clothing, since the sun was high in the sky, and a sunhat to protect my face from a sunburn.
I took charge of the lower deck. I could feel the machine vibrating the whole deck, and I nervously started on a corner. It felt as if the whole deck would fall! But after a few minutes and no large cracking sound, I relaxed and let the loud monotonous buzzing send me into a comfortable pattern. Left, right, left, right. Surprisingly, the paint on the lower deck ended up being completely stripped off! It wasn’t that big of a loss though, since we were going to repaint the deck anyhow. Left, right, left, right. Soon, I had made a large sized “hole” of unpainted deck.
I looked to my left—sigh. There was still a lot left to go.
The sun shined, and I kept going. Buzz, buzz. Left, right, back, and forth. Slowly, I moved from the top to the bottom, from one end of the deck to the other. With the last bit sprayed clean, I jumped for joy! Finally, it was done. I put away the machine, went inside and sat down on the couch, and admired my work. A beautiful deck, nice and sparkling from all my hard work!

Once there were two neighbors. One of them was an old teacher and the other was an office worker. Both of them planted the same plants in their gardens. The old teacher gave a little water to his plants every day and didn’t always care for them, while his neighbor gave much water to his plants and looked after them well.
The old teacher’s plants were simple but looked good. The office worker’s plants were much taller and greener. One night, there was a heavy rain. The next morning, the office worker saw his plants were uprooted (连根拔起), but the old teacher’s plants stood firmly (稳固地).
The neighbor was surprised and went to the old teacher and asked, “We both grew the same plants together. I looked after my plants better than you did, and I even gave them more water. However, my plants were uprooted, while yours weren’t. Why ”
The old teacher smiled and said, “You gave your plants more water, so they didn’t need to work for it. I gave them a little water, so their roots grew deeper to get more water. It made them stronger.”

How to deal with a bully
Most of us have experienced bullying, whether we’ve been bullied ourselves or seen it happen to others. In fact, almost 30 percent of US high school students have been bullied, according to official figures published by the US government.
There are many different kinds of bullying. It could be someone hitting you, someone sending you horrible messages on social media, or someone saying mean things to you. No matter how it happens, being bullied is never a nice experience.
At the same time, anyone can be a victim of bullying—it doesn’t matter who you are.
“I was teased for being ugly, having a big nose, being annoying,” US singer Lady Gaga told Rolling Stone. Even South African entrepreneur Elon Musk—probably one of today’s most important businesspeople—was bullied at school. In fact, his mother Kimbal Musk told Esquire magazine that her son wanted to quit school because of bullies.
“He hated it so much,” she said.
So, if you or someone you know is being bullied, how should you deal with it
Well, first it’s important to try and figure out why the bully is acting the way they are.
Sometimes, for example, some people become bullies because they want to feel powerful. And usually, they pick on the nicest or most well-behaved people. They see these people as an easy target as they are less likely to fight back.
“Sometimes … bullies are children who feel completely powerless at home,” psychologist Gail Gross wrote on HuffPost. “These children may attempt to gain back power by bullying others at school.”
Whatever the reason is, there are many different ways to deal with a bully. The most obvious one is to share your problem with someone else. “All bullying is wrong and it is important that you talk about the problem with someone you can trust,” UK children’s charity Barnardos wrote on its website. “If you are being bullied, you are not alone.”
Indeed, talking to your teacher or parents is usually the best way to end your problem. Or, in some cases, standing up to the person who’s bullying you may change their behavior. Once they know that their bullying doesn’t work on you any more, they’re likely to stop.
Bullies are usually people with a lot of problems outside of school that they want to take out on someone else. But if you ask someone for help or tell your bully to stop, your problem is likely to go away.
Most importantly, remember this: If you’re being bullied, it’s not your fault.

Many kids help their parents to do chores such as washing the dishes, cleaning the floors and taking out the rubbish in the house. And some kids get money or other rewards from their parents, such as playing computer games for 20 minutes.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Susie Walton, a parenting educator. She believes that if kids get rewards, they will think that work isn’t worth(值得) doing unless they can get something. For example, kids won’t sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will clean the floor if their parents reward them for it. Susie said, “A home is a living place for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that it’s all the family members’ job to keep their homes clean.”
Other people have different opinions(观点). They believe that money or other rewards can encourage(鼓励) kids to do more chores. It also teaches them real world lessons that we need to work to make money. Now, there are also apps that encourage kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and gifts that can be used either online or in the real world. With the Chore Monster app, kids get points after doing chores. Kids can exchange(交换) their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall.
