Mindful eating doesn’t come naturally to me. I’d developed the habit of doing several things at once, like eating and reading. It felt like dead time not to use the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. I’ve been guilty of eating a really healthy diet - while barely noticing it.
It took an 11-year-old to truly show me what eating mindfully looks like. Many years ago, when my daughter came home after her first day at secondary school, I fired a flow of questions at her: “Did I you make new friends ”, “Were the teachers nice ” Entirely focusing on a cheese sandwich, she looked at me pointedly, “Mummy, I’ll tell you all about it in a bit. I just want to enjoy eating this sandwich quietly.” So I bit my lip and watched her close her eyes, smile and “Mmmm” as she chewed. It was a sharp contrast to how I ate my lunch.
We’re so used to reducing time that we’ve downgraded eating to something to be squeezed (挤压) in while we’re doing something else. Our grab-and-go culture encourages eating in a rush — the quicker the better. All too often, we end up wolfing down a few biscuits between calls as something to keep us going. But there’s a huge downside to our disconnected eating. When you don’t fully experience your food, you don’t pay attention to whether you’re hungry or not — or full or not.
Our social media feeds are flooded with healthy recipes and there’s no end of focus on the quality of our food. But there’s comparatively little focus on how we eat it — and actually that makes all the difference. So, let’s turn our attention to eating slowly, mindfully and with enjoyment. Here’s a challenge for you: Can you practice eating at least one meal a day without any distractions (分心) No smartphone, no TV, no radio, no newspaper, no magazines You might well feel a lot of resistance to it at first ... but keep trying!
4. What was the author’s initial opinion about multitasking while eating
A. It was a waste of time. B. It worked people to death.
C. It was an efficient time-using way. D. It dragged people from food enjoyment.
5. What did the author learn from her daughter
A. To fully enjoy simple eating pleasure. B. To maintain independence in growth.
C. To effectively balance work and relaxation. D. To prioritize family over personal activities.
6. What does disconnected eating lead to
A. Forgetting being on a diet. B. Being particular about food.
C. Addiction to multitask lifestyle. D. Unawareness of hunger and fullness.
7. What message does the author mainly convey
A. Modern lifestyles need big changes.
B. Technology has bad impacts on dining habits.
C. Enjoying meals attentively enhances well-being.
D. Healthy recipes are more important than eating style.

Scientists have long debated whether the planet Venus (金星) could ever have supported life. Now, a study of its atmosphere suggests it probably couldn’t.
Venus is sometimes referred to as “Earth’s evil (邪恶的) twin”. The two planets are similar in size and d are made of the same materials but up close, Venus’s “evil” side is revealed. The planet is covered with thick clouds of acid and has an average surface temperature of nearly 500℃.
Plenty of spacecraft have been sent to study the planet, including Venus Express, but it is still a mystery. Some scientists thought it might have had oceans on its surface. This is important because liquid water is generally accepted as essential to the development of life, or, at least, the kind of life we know about.
To work out if Venus once had oceans, the team wanted to see if there was any water inside the planet. They started the search by examining its atmosphere. On hot Venus, water gets into the atmosphere as steam thrown out during volcanic eruptions. By studying the planet’s atmosphere, the team found that very little water was needed to keep it stable. From that, they calculated that gases from Venus’s volcanoes are only 6% steam at most, far less than here on watery Earth.
These “dry” eruptions on Venus suggest that the inside of the planet where the rock and gas in volcanic eruptions come from contains little water. The team said this lack of water suggests oceans have never existed on the planet. The study’s lead author, Tereza Constantinou, said, “Given that it likely never had oceans, it is hard to imagine Venus ever having supported Earth-like life, which requires liquid water.”
What was the early evolution (进化) of Venus and how did its initial conditions go different from Earth Exploring the potential for extreme microorganisms and studying ancient volcanic activity may provide further insights into the planet’s past and its potential for hosting alternative forms of life.
8. Why is Venus referred to as “Earth’s evil twin”
A. For its support for life in a different form.
B. For a similar surface temperature to Earth.
C. For the same atmospheric composition as Earth.
D. For its similarity to Earth but worse environment.
9. What can we learn from the findings about Venus’s volcano steam
A. Venus had oceans replaced by volcanoes.
B. Venus has been too hot to support life.
C. Venus has never had large amounts of water.
D. Venus was rich in rocks without water.
10. What future research is suggested to better understand Venus
A. The extreme climate on Venus-like planets.
B. The possibility for extreme microorganisms.
C. Sending more spacecraft to map the surface of it.
D. Comparing the composition of Venus with other planets.
11. Which of the following serves as the best title for the text
A. Venus’s hidden secrets B. Early evolution of Venus
C. No life on “Earth’s evil twin” D. More hope for “life in the heaven”
D
Think of microplastics, and you might think of the ones gathering in the world’s oceans. However, they are also filling the air we breathe. Now, it has been discovered that forests might be acting gas a sink for these airborne microplastics, offering humanity yet another crucial service.
The study has recently been published in Environmental Chemistry Letters, by a multi-institutional research group led by Professor Akane Miyazaki of Japan Women’s University. “We investigated airborne microplastics on konara oak tree leaves in a small forest in Tokyo,” says lead author of the study, Natsu Sunaga. “We wanted to determine a dependable method for analyzing levels of these microplastics on leaf surfaces, and how exactly airborne microplastics become trapped by leaves.”
The leaves were treated using three processes: Washing with ultrapure water, blending treatment with ultrasonic waves (超声波) and washing with ultrapure water, and treatment with an alkaline (碱性的) solution of 10% potassium hydroxide. “We found that airborne microplastics strongly stick to the epicuticular wax (表皮蜡质) on the leaf surface,” explains Akane Miyazaki, senior author. “In other words, these particles gather when they stick to the waxy surface coating of leaves.”
The team discovered that the first two treatments — washing with ultrapure water alone or in combination with ultrasonic waves — were not enough for accurately determining the levels of airborne microplastics on forest leaves. Treatment with alkaline potassium hydroxide, however, removed both the epicuticular wax and the substances stuck to it, proving to be an effective method. Crucially, previous studies that used only the first two methods may have underestimated the number of plastics stuck to leaf surfaces. “Based on our findings, we estimate that the Quercus serrata forests of Japan trap about 420 trillion airborne microplastics per year in their canopies,” states Sunaga.
How the gradual increase of these microplastics will affect forest ecosystems including ecosystem functions and soil health, is unknown, and this will undoubtedly be an area of further research. For now, we know that forests and even roadside trees might reduce the amount of plastic entering our lungs, and for that we have yet another reason to thank trees.
12. Why did the researchers employ three processes to treat the leaves
A. To arrange tasks reasonably. B. To decide a reliable method.
C To achieve the maximum effect. D. To celebrate a novel technology.
13. What does the underlined word “blending” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Ignoring. B. Balancing.
C. Combining. D. Promoting.
14. What is a key advantage of using alkaline potassium hydroxide
A. It completes the process more quickly.
B. It preserves natural leaf color effectively.
C. It does not require specialized equipment.
D. It removes wax and stuck substances well.
15. What will the following research probably focus on
A. The benefits of forests for human health.
B. The application of the new research results.
C. The impact of microplastics on forest ecosystems.
D. The improvement of microplastic-removing ways.

There were never-ending wars between me and my mother. We spent a lot of time in a state of debate. As much as I wanted to respect her wishes, I always had my own plans in my head. Her wishes and my plans were rarely the same.
She would tell me to tie my shoelaces; I would argue that the knots made it harder to get my shoes off. She would demand that I make my bed; I would insist that it was not necessary. She would ask me to cut the grass in the backyard and I’d reply with a comprehensive list of all the reasons that the grass looked better tall and uncut. Round and round we’d go in a funny dance. She’d throw out a rule, and I’d find a loophole (漏洞) and jump through it. When all the loopholes were closed, I would switch strategies. Instead of arguing, I would try to find the closest open door and run. But it seemed that my mom was always waiting at the exit.
I am convinced that weekends are not for work. They are for leisure and adventure. That’s why there’s no school on weekends. Nevertheless, my mom thinks the other way. Last Saturday morning, when I was dreaming beneath my warm blanket, my bedroom door flew open and came the voice of my mother, “Wake up, Walter. It is time to start the day.” Pretending not to hear my mom, I tried to close my eyes even tighter. My mom didn’t wait for my response. She drew open the curtain and told me that we were going to have a thorough clean for our house and that I was in charge of tidying my bedroom and the study. “I am scheduled to go skating with my friends.” I was somewhat annoyed and made an excuse.

【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
“Before you can go outside, you need to finish inside,” my mom said. Knowing that I couldn’t escape my mom’s rules, I reluctantly agreed to help and left my bed with a heavy sigh. As I began to tidy up, I was impatient and careless. But as my mom kept an eye on my process now and then, I had to be hard on my work. The pile of clothes that had taken up residence on my floor found their way back into the drawers, and the scattered books and papers began to find their place on the shelves.
By the time I finished, I felt a strange sense of accomplishment. The room, once in a mess, started to look more inviting. The study, once chaotic, became a peaceful shelter. I realized that maybe there was some value to my mother’s insistence on order. It wasn’t just about following rules. It was about creating a space that fostered productivity and peace. It was not just about cleaning. It was about growing up. It was about understanding that sometimes, the things we resist can turn out to be the very things that teach us the most.
