Zandra Cunningham is the founder of a skincare brand. She has been recognized by the media as one of the youngest and most successful business owners in America.
When she was a kid, Zandra always loved lip balms(润唇膏) and bought a lot of them. But she found they eventually hurt her lips instead of relieving the dryness because of all the chemicals in them. She then started experimenting with different ingredients(成分) together with her mom. They tried a lot of times until they found the natural and healthy combinations they liked. Slowly, Zandra began selling her products at local farmers’ markets and trade events. Before her 10th birthday, she launched her brand and hoped it would inspire other young girls.
Soon, it became a challenge for Zandra to separate her personal interests from what her customers usually wanted. “There are a lot of ideas that I feel are excellent but wouldn’t fit into the market,” she said. Her business being part of the market, Zandra recognized the issue and improved her products after truly listening to customers. “There are so many brands doing similar things, but there is still so much room to grow. Your customers are out there, and you just have to reach out to them. That’s what will set you apart,” the 23-year-old shared.
When asked about her experience as a promising young businesswoman, Zandra said, “It wasn’t frightening. When you are young, fear doesn’t have a strong hold on your mindset. That maybe it was not going to work never really crossed my mind.”
Characterized by encouraging statements and featuring a playful color combination, the packaging is a big part of why Zandra’s business has been so successful. “There are a lot of products on the market that seem natural, but they actually aren’t,” she said. “I make sure that my packaging can help people understand what each term means, and how to read and check ingredients.”
19. What contributed to Zandra’s getting into the skincare business
A. Her goal of providing local people with cheap skin products.
B. Her wish to give a hand to some poor girls.
C. Her interest in doing chemical experiments.
D. Her desire to create skin-friendly products.
20. How did Zandra deal with the trouble in her business
A. She took inspiration from successful businesswomen.
B. She made an effort to meet real market needs.
C. She stood by her own business decisions.
D. She cooperated with powerful brands.
21. Why has Zandra succeeded in her business according to Zandra herself
A. Her work experience. B. Her parents’ support.
C. Her youthful positivity. D. Her traditional thinking.
22. What does Zandra expect her packaging to do
A. Encourage customers to be aware of environment problems.
B. Educate customers about product knowledge.
C. Collect customers’ opinions on skincare.
D. Draw customers’ attention to the color.

Making eye contact with a robot can be a very strange experience. Scientists even have a name for the feeling: the “mysterious valley”. Now, researchers at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Italy have found that it is more than just a feeling. They ran an experiment that showed how a robot’s gaze (凝视) can trick people into thinking they are socially interacting with a human being. That experience can slow a person’s ability to make decisions.
“The gaze is an extremely important social signal,” said the lead writer, Professor Agnieszka Wykowska, “The question is whether the robot’ s gaze will cause very similar mechanisms (机制) in the human brain as a human’s gaze would.”
The team asked 40 participants to play a video game of “chicken”. Each player had to decide whether to permit a car to run straight toward another car or to turn to avoid a crash. The people played against a human-like robot sitting across from them. During breaks in the game, players had to look at the robot. Sometimes the robot would look back and at other times it would look away. As the interactions happened, the scientists collected data on participants’ behavior and brain activity.
“Our results show the gaze of the robot had an impact on the way humans made decisions and humans’ responses, so humans were much slower in making decisions in the game,” Wykowska said. Given that the robot is designed to copy the shape and appearance of people, it’s not altogether surprising perhaps that its gaze can influence people’s attention.
The findings could be useful for deciding where and how human-like robots might be placed. “When we understand when and how robots change people’s social behavior, then we can decide in which sort of context (环境) this is desirable and beneficial for humans and in which context something should not occur,” Wykowska said.
23. What did the robots do when participants looked at them during breaks
A. They sat among the participants for a while. B. They made eye contact with the participants.
C. They greeted the participants in a polite way. D. They had a chat with the participants.
24. What is the key point of the study according to Wykowska
A. How humans can control robots.
B. How robots react to human’s gaze.
C. Whether robots and humans can think the same way.
D. Whether robots’ gaze can have the same impact as humans’.
25 How should the player deal with the car in the game
A. Whether it should keep away from another car. B. When it should be filled up with gas.
C. What speed it should run at. D. Where it should be parked.
26. What do the findings intend to state
A. The working principle of human-like robots. B. The application strategy of human-like robots.
C. The perfection of human-like robots’ actions. D. The improvement of human-like robots’ assessment.

Japan turns to more legal measures to support child-bearing as its total fertility (生育) rate and number of births hit new record lows in 2023. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan on Wednesday reported that the total fertility rate, which is the average number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime, fell to 1.20, continuously dropping for the eighth year.
The number of babies born in Japan in 2023 dropped by 43,482 from the year of 2022 to 727,277, the lowest since record-keeping began in 1899. Meanwhile, the number of deaths rose by 6,886 from the year of 2022, reaching a record high of 1,575,936.
The number of marriages also fell, dropping by 30,213 from the year of 2022 to 474,717, the lowest since World War II. Late marriages and financial concerns are often regarded as reasons for the declining (下滑的) birthrate. Officials said that various factors, such as economic instability and the challenge of balancing work and childcare, jointly led to the critical situation.
To address the declining birthrate, Japan passed a law on Wednesday that expands monthly child allowances (补贴) and parental leave. Starting in the year of 2026, this new child-rearing support will be funded by higher monthly health insurance fees.
Key changes include extending child allowance coverage from age 15 to age 18 and removing the income limit for parents and guardians. Additionally, the monthly allowance for a third or subsequent child will be doubled to 30,000 yen ($192) , with these changes set to take effect in a few months. Other measures include increased benefits for parents taking childcare leave and expanded daycare services for children, regardless of their parents’ employment (就业) status.
27. How many babies were born in Japan in 2022
A. 474,717. B. 727,277. C. 770,759. D. 1,575,936.
28. What is the main topic of Paragraph 3
A. Fall of the number of marriages. B. Causes of the declining birthrate.
C. Effects of the declining birthrate. D. Challenge of balancing work and childcare.
29. How can parents who have a third child benefit from the new measures
A. They will be supplied with free milk powder. B. They will be provided with low-rent housing.
C. They will get a higher monthly allowance. D. They will get more monthly salaries.
30. What is the best title for the news report
A Japan passes new law to increase birthrate
B. Daycare services for children expanded in Japan
C. More young Japanese people unwilling to marry
D. Number of deaths in Japan reaches a record high

“Compared with traditional search engines like Google, TikTok’s powerful algorithm and visual presentation are what I love the most,” said a20-year-old girl Dana from the Czech Republic.
Dana said that she has always had a short attention span. When she used traditional search engines, she always lost her way in a sea of words. ___32___ “All of the videos I searched for surprisingly met my tastes and I could get the information I wanted very quickly,” said Dana.

The 19-year-old said she often searches for things like celebrity news, recipes, fashion tips and entertainment recommendations on TikTok. “Nevertheless, when forming my personal opinion on heated topics, I prefer to use Google to gather more information from reputable media sources and organizations,” she added.
Even so, the trend of using images and videos during online searches like TikTok could be here to stay, according to Adrienne Sheares, a social media consultant. ___35___ Google also tried an experiment to let users search by using both text and photos.
“Even if people aren’t interested in, say, TikTok, I think what we are going to start to see is more visual during online searches,” Sheares told ABC News.

第四部分 写作(满分25分)
71. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One morning in April, when I found something was wrong with Alice’s mother, it rained. It seemed as if the Texas sky were sobbing (啜泣). I didn’t know what kind of cancer Mrs. Hastings had until later, but I knew her condition was serious — very serious.
I love Mr. and Mrs. Hastings almost as much as I love my own parents, and Alice is my best friend. But I didn’t want to go to school that day. And I sure didn’t want to see Alice.
What could I possibly say to her What do people say to their friends at such a time I tried every trick I knew to avoid going to school. But my mother insisted.
“You have a history test this morning, Linda,” she said, looking at me as if she’d crawled into my mind and knew I was just making excuses. Then she smiled and said, “Be sure to stay close to Alice, especially today, because that poor girl is going to need your strength.”
Strength What was Mother talking about I had no strength. I didn’t even know what to say to my best friend. I hid out in the reading room between classes in the hope of avoiding meeting with Alice, but she was never out of my thoughts. I kept trying to come up with something appropriate to say to her because I really wanted to get it right.
Alice and I had the last class in Mrs. Green’s class. I’d avoided seeing her all day, I was going to have to face her in the last period, and I still didn’t have a plan. However, I worried needlessly because Alice never showed up for class. When the English class was over, Mrs. Green said, “Linda, Alice Hastings is your best friend, and she is coming here in a few minutes to get her lesson assignments.”
It seemed as if something was torturing (折磨) my heart and I trembled inwardly. I still didn’t know what to say to Alice, and time was running out.

【答案】I left the classroom, racing down the hall and out of the front gate of our school. I was so nervous to see her. I told myself to calm down and thought about what my mother had told me this morning. I said to myself, “I am her best friend. Encouraging her to face her mother’s illness bravely is what I should do.” I wrote down the words which I wanted to say, hoping my letter would comfort her and give her courage. After finishing the letter, a familiar figure came into my sight. That was Alice. I ran to her immediately.
