Most of us know that music has charms, but today its medicinal properties are being developed as never before.
Music in Hospitals (MiH) began in 1948 and it provides around 5,000 live performances in healthcare settings each year.
“Everyone has a basic need to be occupied,” says MiH CEO Diana Greenman. “Our concerts are an ideal opportunity to help people feel better about themselves and become more interested in what is going on around them. Now, our musicians reach each member of the audience. They stand at bedsides in hospitals, making eye contact, holding hands or perhaps describing instruments. The aim is to bring the person out of the patient.” Diana adds that staff report clients becoming more calm and attentive and forgetting about their diseases temporarily after a concert.
Another example is the Singing for the Brain (SftB) project pioneered a decade ago by Dr Nicholas Bannan, then at the University of Reading. There are now over 100 SftB groups in England and Wales, helping people with dementia (痴呆) through music. One of the early groups was created in Bristol and meets weekly. Gillian Kirk is a singing facilitator there, supported by a team of volunteers. She explains that each week she tries to include a wide range of familiar songs. The group is a safe environment where people with dementia can socialize and feel supported, free from embarrassment because everyone understands the issues associated with memory loss. Strong friendships develop within the group.
“There’s a sense of achievement from mastering musical skills, finding that they can remember favourite songs, sing in simple harmonies and manage part-songs. It’s about what they can still do when some aspects of their lives are becoming more difficult,” says Gillian.
And you don’t have to be ill to benefit from being involved with musical activities. Tessa Marchington founded an agency called Music in Offices.
4. How do musicians in MiH interact with the audience now
A. By giving lectures on musical instruments. B. By asking them to participate in singing.
C. By performing on stage for a large audience. D. By getting in close contact with individuals.
5. What’s the purpose of Music in Hospitals
A. To gain profits from entertaining patients. B. To reduce the need for physical treatments.
C. To free patients from illness for some time. D. To help cure patients of their mental diseases.
6. What can SftB do for people with dementia according to Gillian Kirk
A It allows them to connect with others naturally. B. It enables them to master complex singing skills.
C. It challenges them with something difficult. D. It exposes them to people of different interests.
7. What’s the author going to talk about next
A. Music serves well in healthcare settings. B. Music works in working environments.
C. Music plays a part in school education. D. Music contributes to overall well-being.

The destruction of Pompeii, Italy, is one of the most well-preserved disasters in human history. But scientists still disagree on how thousands of Roman people died during those two days in 79 C. E. For decades, many experts thought they choked to death owing to the massive clouds of ash (灰). More recently, researchers have put forth a different idea: The victims died instantly, when hot gas vaporized (蒸发) their body liquids.
However, a study published today in PLOS ONE supports the original theory. The victims didn’t die in a “single disastrous event”, says Dellino, an archaeologist at the University of Bari Aldo Moro, who was not involved with the work. Instead, there was a window of time when at least some of the citizens tried to escape but failed by the choking ash.
In the new study, co-author Gallello used X-ray to determine the elemental composition of bones. His team examined seven victim models from Pompeii. Six were recovered from a city gate called Porta Nola, the seventh was found in the ruins of a bathhouse. The Porta Nola bodies were positioned on top of a thick layer of pumice (轻石), which suggests they had attempted to escape after the pumice had stopped falling.
He notes that the study claiming instant death analyzed remains from the neighbouring town, which was also destroyed in the 79 C. E. eruption. Many of these victims were seen in a rigid “boxer position”, which is characteristic of rapid death by vaporization. The bodies examined in this study, however, lay in a relaxed position, which suggests a slow death from choke or exhaustion. Impressions show some victims covered themselves with clothes, trying to avoid breathing in ash.
It’s more likely, Gallello says, that the victims died of choke during a lower temperature pyroclastic (火山碎屑的) flow and were buried under a layer of volcanic ash. Only later, after death, did higher temperature gas and lava flow over the bodies, heating the ash and burning away victims’ clothes and flesh, leaving behind carbonized bones.
Although this distinction may seem pointless, it may have implications for understanding how natural disasters affect human lives, Dellino says.
8. What did experts think Roman people die from in the past decades
A. Being hit by pumice. B. Choking due to thick ashes.
C. Losing body liquids. D. Being exposed to poisonous gases.
9. What’s the evidence that supports the original theory
A. The position of Pompeii victims. B. The discovery of clothes on the victims.
C. The distribution of personal things. D. The existence of pumice over the bodies.
10. What’s an indicator of victims’ instant death
A. The carbonized bones. B. The bodies’ rigid “boxer position”.
C. The shelter under the clothes. D. The low temperature pyroclastic flow.
11. What’s Dellino’s attitude towards Gallello’s study
A. Unconcerned. B. Unclear. C. Appreciative. D. Doubtful.
D
Young chimps (黑猩猩) are already known to get many benefits from playing. But it seems to also be more important among adult chimps than previously thought. A study of dozens of adult chimps in Ivory Coast suggests that play helps adults reduce tension and boost cooperation among individuals.
“Every time we think we have something like, ‘This is the thing that makes humans different,’ eventually we knock it down,” says Kris Sabbi, a researcher at Harvard University who was not involved in the study. “We used to think that playing into adulthood was something humans did but, as it turns out, it’s something that chimps do, too.”
“For young chimps, playing helps them develop social and physical skills. But what role playing has for adults has remained understudied,” says behavioural ecologist Liran Samuni of the German Primate Centre in G ttingen. So Samuni and his workmates monitored wild chimps living in Ivory Coast. From 2012 to 2018, the researchers documented almost 5,000 play sessions involving at least one adult chimp among 57 adults belonging to three different communities.
The team found that play was quite common among these adult chimps, coming in many forms and situations. Overall, adult chimps played on about 40 percent of the days the researchers observed them, and mostly when food was more available. Usually, an adult played with just one partner, but sometimes more joined in; the largest documented play session was among five individuals.
The grown-ups more likely played together on days when the group worked together to hunt monkeys or defend their territory against other groups of chimps, mostly before those activities took place. “These coordinated (协调的) behaviours require the participation of multiple individuals,” Samuni says, “thus adult-adult social play, which may develop trust, reduce anxiety and motivate engagement, is particularly beneficial.”
Adults were more likely to play with someone they recently fought with compared with anyone else, suggesting that social play“might serve as a natural course for conflict reconciliation and tension reduction”.
“In humans, we know that sharing positive experiences is important for our social relationships,” says Zanna Clay, a psychologist at Durham University in England and co-author of the Zambia study. “It’s likely these functions are evolutionarily ancient and shared with our other primate relatives.”
12. What can we learn from Kris Sabbi’s words
A. Young chimps play more frequently than adult ones.
B. Chimps can play into adulthood just as humans can.
C. Humans often knock down ideas put forward by themselves.
D. Trust and cooperation are easily formed in chimp communities.
13. What did the team find about chimps in the study
A. They played together on most observed days. B. They usually played in pairs or small groups.
C. Food played a vital role in chimp socializing. D. Hunting contributed to better relationship.
14. What does the underlined word “reconciliation” in Paragraph 6 mean
A. Eruption. B. Intensification. C. Repetition. D. Resolution.
15. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Playing is of significance for adult chimps. B. Humans learn from ancient chimps.
C. Researchers found a rare behaviour of chimps. D. Chimps have various ways to share emotions.

In the summer of 2024, Caroline Davis and her partner were doing a DIY home project that required 1,500 pounds of gravel (碎石). So Davis headed to a home improvement store, and started filling up her Toyota Corolla with 50-pound bags.
“I’m loading loading. And this older man comes over,” she recalled. “And he says, ‘Do you know that your car has a weight limit ’” Davis did not know that. It had never even occurred to her that she could damage her car with a heavy load. “That feels to me like something your dad would tell you,” Davis said. Her dad had died of a heart attack in 2017, at the age of 57.
“So I’m doing DIY later in life,” she said. “I didn’t learn that from him.” Davis started to feel lost; how was she going to unload the gravel from her car and bring it back to the store And then how would she transport all the gravel she needed back home for her project That’s when the man made an offer of unusual generosity.
“He says, ‘I can load you up in my truck. Do you live nearby ’ And I say, ‘Yes,’” Davis said. The man helped her unload all the gravel from her car, and then loaded it into his truck. They exchanged numbers, and she shared her address. When she pulled onto the highway, the kindness of what he had done began to hit her.
“I just start to cry in my car because I was so grateful for the goodness of strangers, of this person helping me,” Davis said. “The whole interaction just reminded me of my dad, of knowing that that’s something that he would do.”
When they arrived at her house, the man helped her unload all 1,500 pounds of gravel onto her driveway. She thanked him, again and again, and he insisted that she not worry about it.

【答案】One possible version:
Davis didn’t want him to leave empty-handed. She tried to offer him money, then wine, but he wouldn’t accept them. Then she thought of something he might like. “I have a garden. And it’s the end of the season. And I just say, “Do you like cucumbers ” Davis recalled. “He’ s been pretty serious up until now,” she said. “And his face just lights up and he says, ‘I love cucumbers.’” She offered him a tour of the garden; it turned out he, too, had been a gardener, before his work got in the way.
Davis picked a handful of cucumbers from her garden and gave them to the man. He seemed thrilled. “He tucks them under his arm, and he just marches off back to his truck,” she said. “And I watched him drive off, leaving behind my 1,500 pounds of gravel.” Today, inspired by her unsung hero, Davis tries to be on the lookout for others who might need a hand. “I just am so grateful for people like that, who teach me the things I don’t know I don’t know.”
