One evening five years ago, Joshua Coombes was walking to a friend’s house after finishing work at a hairdressing salon when he stopped to talk to Michael. He had bought the homeless man something to eat or given him some spare change, but this time a thought occurred to Coombes: How about I offer him a haircut He had his scissors in his backpack and he cut the man's hair right there on the street. As he worked, the pair of them fell into the chatty intimacies (亲密) of barber and customer.
The next time they met, the man introduced Coombes to a couple of his friends and he got his scissors out for them too.
Soon, he was out as often as he could be, enjoying the chance to change often desperate lives in a small, surprising way. When we met for a coffee near his home in Peckham, south London, he said, “Living on the street, you’re thinking of where you’re getting your next meal. So my walking up and offering a haircut was unexpected and most of the time people were really receptive. And if they’re not, that’s totally fine too. I’ll just have a chat with someone and see where that goes.”
About a year after that first spring evening, Coombes gave up his job at the salon and devoted himself to his new career full time. He had started taking before-and-after pictures of his homeless “customers” and posting them along with the stories he heard about their lives on his Instagram account. He came up with a hashtag #DoSomethingForNothing, which inspired some readers to think what they could do; one friend, for example, a vet, started to offer to treat the dogs of people on the street.
He also put the stories of many of the people whose hair he had this year cut --- in Britain and on later trips in India and across the US ---into a book to raise awareness further this year. His royalties(版税) all go to charity.
24.What did Coombes do for Michael
A. He gave Michael money. B. He lunched with Michael.
C.He introduced Michael to his friends. D.He invited Michael to his barbershop.
25. How did most people on the street react to Coombes’ haircut offer
A. They gave him the cold shoulder. B. They willingly accepted his offer.
C. They were doubtful of his purpose. D. They asked for something else instead.
26.What did Coombes do this year
A. He took photos of the homeless.
B. He took on a well-paid job to help the homeless.
C. He authored a book about his homeless “customers”.
D. He toured around to inspire the homeless to dream big.
27. What’s the best title for the text
A. A friend in need B. A book in the making
C. A street for the homeless D. A hairdresser to street people
C
There is nothing quite like stepping into the shower at any time of the day. A warm shower certainly sounds more comfortable, but a number of influential people have recently said that for them, taking a freezing cold shower every morning is the best thing they have ever started to do. Take Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and CEO of Twitter, for example. He said in an interview, “Nothing has given me more mental confidence than being able to go straight from room temperature into the cold.” For us, starting the day in the freezing cold is the worst thing anyone can suggest!
Recently in Holland, 3,000 people volunteered to take part in an experiment. They were all instructed to take a warm shower every day. When they were about to finish, they were told to reduce the temperature for a 30-second burst of freezing water. Following the experiment, most of them said that the cold shower had given them a surge in energy that felt similar to drinking strong pared with others who had not taken the cold shower, they said they were less likely to call their office and say they were sick. What’s more, 64 percent thought they would continue with the cold showers even though the experiment had come to an end.
This change in energy has been explained by Professor Andreas Michalsen from Berlin. “Cells in our skin that respond to light and heat react when coming into freezing water. These cells, called receptors, send a message to the brain which releases endorphins (内啡肽) into the bloodstream. Endorphins are chemicals that help reduce body pain or can help you feel more relaxed or full of energy.”
Cold water arouses blood flow which can reduce the itching (瘙痒) and bleeding caused by a skin condition called eczema (湿疹). Eczema can make your skin itch. This is good news for people suffering from eczema. So would you take a freezing cold shower every day
28. What is Jack Dorsey’s attitude towards cold showers
A. Intolerant. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
29. What can we learn about the participants in the experiment
A. They began with warm showers.
B. They had taken cold showers for years.
C. They took cold showers every two days.
D. They drank strong coffee before taking cold showers.
30. What does the underlined word “surge” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Balance. B. Saving. C. Rise. D. Loss.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. A cause of a skin disease.
B. The seriousness of eczema.
C. An advantage of taking cold showers.
D. The explanation of the experiment result.
D
Leaving a group of friends the other night, I turned to wave. “Text me!” one of them said, moving her thumbs in the air. I didn't need the words. Among my friends, this gesture has replaced the imaginary cups to ear and mouth, as if making a phone call.
Today, we may be more likely to move our fingers across a mobile phone than turn the pages of a book. Yet when it comes to gesturing, certain outdated motions (动作) last.
Gestures can generally be sorted into two categories, according to Spencer Kelly from Colgate University. “Co-speech gestures” are often the unconscious (无意识的) ways we move our hands as we talk. Researchers believe these gestures help us think and speak and even learn. “Symbolic gestures” are the cultural motions that we use to replace speech. Some of these gestures are symbolic, and some, as in the case of thumb-texting, copy real actions.
Some gestures are recycled, their meanings changing as cultures develop. In ancient Rome, the thumbs-up was a sign to kill the gladiator (角斗士). Anthony Corbeill, the author of Nature Embodied: Gesture in Ancient Rome, suspects that the current American meaning of the gesture developed during the 20th century, when American soldiers used the thumbs-up to signify that a plane was cleared for takeoff. Other gestures are coined afresh, the result of new technology or the habits of a public figure. The fist bump (碰拳), which spread after Barack and Michelle Obama were photographed in action in 2008, can be traced to the mid-20th-century baseball player Stan Musial, who is said to have preferred it to the high five.
There's also the mind-blowing realization that the more advanced our technology becomes, the less we have to move at all - a futuristic reality, signs of which we’re beginning to see with the rise of voice-recognition software. Does this mean that gestures might one day disappear “If the computer can track your eye look and know what you’re looking at, you don’t need to make a gesture,” says Jason Riggle from the University of Chicago.
32. How did the author feel about his friend’s gesture
A. It was old-fashioned. B. It was mysterious.
C. It was rude. D.It was clear.
33. What can be learned about people making co-speech gestures
A. They’re bored with them. B. They’re unaware of them.
C.They’re careful about them. D.They’re unhappy about them.
34.What can be inferred about the thumbs-up sign
A. It came into being not long ago.
C.It was popularized by a public figure.
B.It was used on and off in history.
D. It was related to cruelty at the beginning
35. What does the futuristic reality in the last paragraph refer to
A. The less use of gestures.
C.The bad influence of technology.
B.The complexity of gestures.
D.The mind-blowing nature of social life.

I used to be a lonely girl sitting at the back of the classroom. Having failed the college entrance exams and changed schools twice, I seldom smiled. Every day I would sit at the desk, staring into textbooks and exercises, motionless and heavy-hearted. However, my classmates were in a different picture. They were playing, laughing and chatting delightedly. Besides, I hated it when they were always answering the teachers’ questions, loudly and confidently. Obviously, I had no friends in this fiercely competitive class.
Life is harder for senior students. Hardly does a day go by without exercises or tests. Every time when the scores came out mine wouldn't be the first or second but last. I was especially tired of the endless exercises and exams, which I seemingly would never do well in. I was under a lot of pressure, feeling like a fish being fried in a pan.
Hanging over me was a dark cloud. The only dim light came from Mr.Smith. Every time I stepped into the classroom, he welcomed me with a warm smile; every time my gaze began to wander over the classroom or stare out of the window, his caring eyes would draw me back to his class. Besides, he was the only teacher who invited me to the office, talking about my studies and scores. I remembered when I came out of his office, I felt refreshed believing that I could work harder.
I was feeling everything was changing for the better. I prepared hard for the final exam of the first semester, desiring to prove that I was not the last one. So before Mr. Smith told us the test result, I was expecting something good in store for me.
But I was still the last one in the class. A burst of sadness and shame consuming me, I was heartbroken.注意:

How time flies! One-term exchange activity is coming to an end. I feel privileged to say farewell to our UK friends on behalf of our school.

We had discussions, worked on projects, and enjoyed cultural activities, through which we have formed a lasting friendship. Here, please accept these Chinese knots. May our friendship last forever and wish you a happy journey home! Thank you.
A possible version:
Right at that moment,Mr. Smith invited me to his office.Hesitantly, I walked into the office. Mr.Smith greeted me with a smile. As he began talking, not about my grades or mistakes, but about my potential and perseverance,it became apparent that this talk was totally a different one. He didn't blame me. Instead, he praised my resilience and determination(坚韧和决心).He encouraged me to embrace my struggles, reminding me that success was never a straight path. In his eyes, I could see his belief in me, and I knew I should never quit.
Finally, the college admission letter came. I held it in my shaking hands, doubting whether I was in a world of fantasy. But as I opened the envelope, I couldn't believe my eyes.
B 29. A 30. C 31. C
根据第一段“Take Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and CEO of Twitter, for example. He said in an interview, “Nothing has given me more mental confidence than being able to go straight from room temperature into the cold.”(以Twitter的联合创始人兼首席执行官杰克·多尔西为例。他在一次采访中说,“没有什么比直接从室温进入寒冷环境更能给我精神上的信心了。”)”可知,Jack Dorsey认为没有什么比直接从室温进入寒冷环境更能给自己带来精神上的自信了,因此推断Jack Dorsey很喜欢洗冷水澡,对洗冷水澡是赞同的。故选B。
【29题详解】细节理解题。根据第二段的“They were all instructed to take a warm shower every day. When they were about to finish, they were told to reduce the temperature for a 30-second burst of freezing water.( 他们都被要求每天洗个温水澡。当他们即将结束时,他们被告知要用30秒的冰水来降低温度。)”可知,他们从温水澡开始。故选A。
根据画线词所在句“Following the experiment, most of them said that the cold shower had given them a surge in energy that felt similar to drinking strong coffee.(在实验之后,大多数人说,冷水洗澡会给他们带来一种与喝浓咖啡相似的能量的surge。)”
根据最后一段内容“Cold water arouses blood flow which can reduce the itching (瘙痒) and bleeding caused by a skin condition called eczema (湿疹). Eczema can make your skin itch. This is good news for people suffering from eczema. So would you take a freezing cold shower every day ( 冷水能促进血液流动,从而减少因湿疹引起的瘙痒和出血。湿疹会让你的皮肤发痒。这对湿疹患者来说是个好消息。你会每天洗个冷水澡吗 )”可知,该段讲述的是冷水澡的好处。故选C。
[语篇导读]本文是说明文。虽然时代在发展变化,但一些特定的肢体语言仍持续存在。
32.D。推理判断题。根据文章第一段中的I didn’t need the words. Among my friends, this gesture has replaced the imaginary cups to ear and mouth, as if making a phone call
根据文章第三段中的“Co-speech gestures” are often the unconscious ways we move our hands as we talk可知,这种手势语是无意识的动作。
34.D。 In ancient Rome, the thumbs-up was a sign to kill the gladiator可知,竖大拇指手势最早与杀掉角斗士这一残酷的行为有关。
35.A。 根据文章最后一段中的the more advanced our technology becomes, the less we have to move at all可知,这里描绘的未来现实是科技越来越发达,人们对手势语的使用频率越来越低。
A 37. C 38. E 39. D 40. F
【36题详解】由下文“Remember that your CV is only a way of getting your foot in the door, so keep it short. Most successful CVs include the following sections: profile (简介), achievements, experience, special skills (languages/ computers), education, training, and interests. Use no more than two sides of A4 paper. (记住,你的简历只是一种入门的方式,所以要简短。大多数成功的CV包括以下部分:简介(简介), 成就、经验、特殊技能(语言/计算机)、教育、培训和兴趣。使用的A4纸不得超过两面。)”可知,本段主要讲简历要简短。而A项Be brief (简明扼要)符合语境,对本段有总括总用,适合为本段小标题。故选A项。
【37题详解】由下文“Start with the most recent job first. If you have been out of work for a time, give reasons, but don’t talk too much about jobs you did more than 10 years ago. (先从最近的工作开始。如果你已经失业一段时间了,请说明原因,但不要过多谈论10多年前的工作。)”可知,这里主要讲怎样写工作历史。所以C项Give information about your work history in order.
【38题详解】由上文“Although you want to present yourself well, don’t bend the truth. (尽管你想很好地展现自己,但不要歪曲事实。)”可知,这里主要讲简历中不应该说谎,而E项Otherwise, you are likely to be caught out and have your application rejected.
【39题详解】由上文“Take the time to adapt your CV for each job you apply for. Research the company and use the job advertisement to decide what they are looking for. (花点时间根据你申请的每一份工作调整你的简历。对公司进行调查,并利用招聘广告来决定他们要找什么。)”可知,这里主要讲简历内容应符合公司要求,而D项Link your skills and experience to the requirements of each job. 符合语境,其中the requirements of each job与上文what they are looking for对应,有承上作用。故选D项。
【40题详解】由上文“Use this to stress information from your CV that is most related to the job you are applying for. (用这个来强调简历中与你申请的工作最相关的信息。)”可知,这里主要讲发简历时最好还要附上附信。而F项It isn’t good practice to send your CV to an employer on its own without this.

Despite all the odds(尽管困难重重),Igot admitted! I stared at the letter in disbelief for a long time. It felt like the dawn after a seemingly endless night(就像漫长难熬的夜晚后的黎明),a reward for the perseverance I didn't know I had until Mr. Smith showed me. Tears welling up in my eyes(眼里涌出泪水), Mr.Smith might never know how much his encouragement might mean to me in my toughest time.
